Book Following the Northern Star

Download or read book Following the Northern Star written by Greg A. Wiggan and published by Emerald Group Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intersection of migration, identity development and the school achievement of Caribbean heritage children. In doing so, it uncovers the history of the Caribbean and its early inhabitants such as the Siboneyes, Guanahatabeyes, Tainos, Caribs, and Arawaks, who predated the arrival of European explorers and enslavers, and it explains the relevant connections to colonialism, neo-colonialism and Caribbean migration to North America. Through family interviews, it presents perspectives on Caribbean immigrants in North American schools (United States and Canada). The book further explains what happens when these immigrants transition from being the ethnic majority in their home country, into the minority in a foreign country. Interviews with families and personal narratives are weaved into a rich discussion on immigrant identities in school and society. The findings strongly support the treatise in the literature that Caribbean heritage families place a strong emphasis on education and school achievement.

Book Achieving Inclusive Education in the Caribbean and Beyond

Download or read book Achieving Inclusive Education in the Caribbean and Beyond written by Stacey N. J. Blackman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an international perspective of philosophical, conceptual and praxis-oriented issues that impinge on achieving education for all students. It sheds light on the historical, systemic, structural, organizational, and attitudinal barriers that continue to be antithetical to the philosophy and practice of inclusive education within the Caribbean. The first section of the book examines how globalized views of inclusion informed by philosophical ideas from the North have influenced and continue to influence the equity in education agenda in the region. The second section considers how exclusion and marginalization still occur across selected Caribbean islands. It provides both quantitative and qualitative data about the nature and experience of exclusion in selected Caribbean islands, the UK and USA. The third section tackles the practical realities of transforming education systems in the Caribbean for inclusion. In particular, it identifies teacher practices as the main site of interrogation that needs to be tackled if inclusion is to be successful. The fourth and final section examines the contribution of principals and exemplars to the development and advocacy for inclusive education. It discusses how educational leadership is understood, as well as the role of school principals in making inclusion a reality in schools, the challenges experienced and the qualities of education leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together leading scholars of Caribbean education from around the world. Schooling continues to hold a special place both as a means to achieve social mobility and as a mechanism for supporting the economy of Caribbean nations. In this book, the Caribbean includes the Greater and Lesser Antilles. The Greater Antilles is made up of the five larger islands (and six countries) of the northern Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. The Lesser Antilles includes the Windward and Leeward Islands which are inclusive of Barbados, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago along with several other islands. Each chapter provides a unique perspective on the various social and cultural issues that define Caribbean education and schooling. The Handbook on Caribbean Education fills a void in the literature and documents the important research being done throughout the Caribbean. Creating a space where Caribbean voices are a part of “international” discussions about 21st century global matters and concerns is an important contribution of this work.

Book Playing with Languages

Download or read book Playing with Languages written by Amy L. Paugh and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over several generations villagers of Dominica have been shifting from Patwa, an Afro-French creole, to English, the official language. Despite government efforts at Patwa revitalization and cultural heritage tourism, rural caregivers and teachers prohibit children from speaking Patwa in their presence. Drawing on detailed ethnographic fieldwork and analysis of video-recorded social interaction in naturalistic home, school, village and urban settings, the study explores this paradox and examines the role of children and their social worlds. It offers much-needed insights into the study of language socialization, language shift and Caribbean children’s agency and social lives, contributing to the burgeoning interdisciplinary study of children’s cultures. Further, it demonstrates the critical role played by children in the transmission and transformation of linguistic practices, which ultimately may determine the fate of a language.

Download or read book And They Sung a New Song written by Clyde Bacchus and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “new song” refers to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and includes an invitation to all mankind to accept him as their Savior and Lord. Why then has there been a continuing history within the church of the exclusion of people on the basis of their race? These divisions, which were highlighted by Rev. Martin Luther-King in the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, continue to exist not only in the church in the US but also in the UK. Sang traces the beginnings of the church, from Jesus’s command to go out into all the world and make disciples of all nations to the ways in which that command was replaced. Significant influences from Greek philosophy to Roman colonialism infiltrated the church and caused it to compromise biblical truths. The church needs to take the lead and not just talk about healing without an acknowledgment of how we have failed to be obedient to Jesus’s gospel. We need to repent and “do the works of repentance.”
