Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American-Scandinavian Review, 1913, Vol. 1 In spite of these advantages, St. Thomas, after the introduction of steamships and telegraph cables, lost the greater part of its im portance as a trade centre. The routes of the steamers could without difficulty be arranged with a great number of ports of call. In fact, no general distributing center was needed any longer; the European steamships carried out the distribution themselves, going successively from port to port. This condition still prevails; English, German, French, Danish, and Dutch lines have each their itinerary laid out with a number of different ports. The steamers are of moderate size and speed, and even small lots of freight and a small number of passengers will justify their calling at the various ports. With the opening of the Panama Canal these conditions will be radically changed. Larger steamers of higher speed will come to ply between Europe and the west coasts of the American continent, passing through the canal. The routes of the main lines, thus established, will, as seen from the accompanying map, all pass by St. Thomas, and the opportunities for consigning freight to this port, which is so conveniently situated as a relay station on the way to and from the canal, will be abundant and cheap. Goods and passengers destined for ports in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea, including the north coast of South America, and perhaps even for the Orinoco delta, Georgetown, and Paramaribo, can thus be shipped regularly and at low freight rates to St. Thomas, from where they can be distributed by smaller ships to points in this region. Conversely, goods from this region can be collected in St. Thomas, and be there directly transshipped for their points of destination to the big liners bound east or west; or the goods can be warehoused in St. Thomas until opportunity for freighting arrives. As such, Scandinavians from the beginning enjoyed racial privilege and the success it brought without the prejudice, nativism, and stereotyping endured by other immigrant groups. Erika K. Jackson examines how native-born Chicagoans used ideological and gendered concepts of Nordic whiteness and Scandinavian ethnicity to construct social hegemony. Placing the Scandinavian-American experience within the context of historical whiteness, Jackson delves into the processes that created the Nordic ideal. She also details how the city's Scandinavian immigrants repeated and mirrored the racial and ethnic perceptions disseminated by American media. An insightful look at the immigrant experience in reverse, Scandinavians in Chicago bridges a gap in our understanding of how whites constructed racial identity in America.
