Book The Scandal of God s Forgiveness

Download or read book The Scandal of God s Forgiveness written by Edmond Smith and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do we appreciate to the full why the Jewish believers of the early church “were amazed because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on Gentiles”? Why they were amazed that “God had granted repentance” to Gentiles for eternal life? Sacred history is to be seen through enlightened Jewish eyes, revealing that Israel was initially the sole beneficiary of God’s revelation before Christ. For the most part the Gentiles were “allowed . . . to walk in their own ways.” Such was according to divine predestination and the prerogative that God has the freedom to be merciful on whom he desires to be merciful. At the coming of Christ—to the surprise of Jewish believers—Gentiles in numbers became subjects of God’s electing love as well. Jesus died for “the world” in the sense that he died for Jew and Gentile. And God’s freedom in predestination continues to be manifested in the election of both Jew and Gentile, with Christ dying specifically for all those elected of God, as a wide survey of New Testament texts verify.

Book excerpt: Recent sexual scandals have rocked the North American religious scene and left the churches concerned about credibility and liability. What are the bounds of clergy sexuality? What constitutes misconduct, and what legal, moral, and religious norms apply? More broadly, what has gone wrong, and how can clergy understand their own sexuality and their lives of service? Lloyd Rediger is a uniquely qualified national expert on all these questions with a strong message for clergy about their sexuality, spirituality, and behavior. In this timely volume, which incorporates material from his earlier volume Ministry and Sexuality, Rediger brings his extensive research, clinical experience, and theological insights to bear on the topic. He offers a comprehensive, authoritative account of clergy sexuality and sexual ethics with up-to-date legal information; helpful research on ethnic, gender, and denominational factors; a religious and moral framework for understanding clergy sexuality; and analysis of the sexual problems encountered by clergy. (Learn more about Dr. Rediger at his website.) This volume could well become the standard pro-fessional resource for clergy in a new era of increased accountability and moral reflection.

Perhaps the most familiar public manifestation of the holiness movement has been its urban holiness missions, and the Salvation Army_noted for its service ministries among poor and people suffering the dislocations that accompany war and disaster_is the most notable example. In the second edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Holiness Movement, important new developments in the Holiness Movement_such as the widely discussed 'Holiness Manifesto'_are thoroughly discussed, and the content has also been expanded to include information on figures from Asia and Africa to reflect the continued growth of the Holiness Movement. With a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries, this reference has information that cannot be found elsewhere.

Book Sovereign Scriptural Segues

Download or read book Sovereign Scriptural Segues written by J. George Lawrence and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-12-24 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of Christ’s disciples abandoned Him, because they could not accept His “hard” teaching noted in the book of John, chapter 6. This hard-hitting book mirrors the words of eternal life that the Holy Scriptures provide, enabling those who respond by grace (favor/power), through faith to share (not possess) that very life. The sovereign statements made by Jesus Christ require much of those to whom much is given, and indicate the need for perseverance. Christ will not believe, repent, continue (segue) in faith, or persevere for us, but will daily empower us to be more than conquerors of sin and the world. We are not helpless against sin and temptation, and we are commanded to stop sin in our lives by God’s grace. With a unique approach to examining the sovereign scriptural segues presented throughout the Bible, this book will enlighten and hopefully inspire the reader to take a more serious look at all of God’s Holy Word—His messages to us that are critical for victorious Christian living. o Metaplasmic memory words o Post-modern, “Humpty-Dumpty” interpretation of Scripture o Biblical acronyms o In-depth analysis of Christ’s exact words and parables o Conventional Greek grammar tenses Much of Scripture is dedicated to correcting the tragedy of error which is prevalent in the lion’s share of Christian literature. The truth that is often eclipsed is uncovered here. This presentation aims to lead toward greater unity and conformity to God’s Will. To be—or not to be—in Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Explains the Concept of Forgiveness Henry J. Charles brings forgiveness into modernity as an integral moral imperative PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago (Release Date TBD) When the concept of forgiveness takes the center stage, most Christian and Western culture-oriented people usually relate it to its religious connotation, in every likelihood drawing on the ultimate expression of forgiveness in the death of Jesus Christ on the cross. Author Henry J. Charles, though affirming the roots of forgiveness in the Biblical heritage, considers the notion in its broader dimensions as an ethical imperative, one also capable of geo-political application. FORGIVENESS CONSIDERED first explores the word in its biblical and non-biblical meanings. It also clarifi es the several misrepresentations and misconceptions of forgiveness in ordinary understanding. In other portions of the book, the author deals with forgiveness as a special process akin to a fundamental change in character. He also deals with implications of forgiving and forgetting, and the idea that certain acts can be considered unforgiveable. The book finally looks to special geopolitical contexts, where nations attempt to come to term with histories of brutality and oppression, as a way to envisage and realize a more liberating future. He examines the realities of amnesty, forgiveness, and reconciliation in South Africa, in the light of the latters history of apartheid, in the hope that forgiveness and reconciliation may be accorded a much wider application in human affairs than repairing the serious breaches that occur in interpersonal relations.

Book A Poetics of Forgiveness

Download or read book A Poetics of Forgiveness written by J. Scott and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent interest in forgiveness and reconciliation, relatively little research has been conducted on forgiveness in literary studies. A Poetics of Forgiveness explores the profound links between creativity and forgiveness, and argues that creative production and interpretation can play a vital role in practices of forgiveness. Developing a model of "poetic forgiveness" through the work of Julia Kristeva, Jacques Derrida, and Kelly Oliver, A Poetics of Forgiveness asks how forgiveness is expressed in literature and other art forms, and what creative works can bring to secular debates on forgiveness and conflict resolution. Jill Scott explores these questions in a wide variety of historical and cultural contexts, from Homer s Iliad to 9/11 novels, from postwar Germany to post-Apartheid South Africa, in canonical texts and in diverse media, including film, photography, and testimony.

Book Beyond the Walls of Separation

Download or read book Beyond the Walls of Separation written by Tobias Brandner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Walls of Separation is an essential and easy-to-read guidebook for chaplains and volunteers working in the context of prison, and for all those who are professionally or through family links related to those in prison. The book tells the story of what life behind bars is, and how inmates experience transformation through Christian faith: People at the crisis points of their life, where they are shattered, and where little is left of what made them, may experience life as fragile and as a transparent filter for the mysterious. Yet they also may experience God's life-giving presence. Love, expressed in forgiveness--against all odds, against all merits and previous experiences--lies at the root of many stories of transformation that emerge from prison. The book guides visitors to approach inmates without condescension, with an awareness of the social dimension of power and inequality, and with sensitivity to the suffering and alienation that individual prisoners experience. The many years of prison ministry in different cultural contexts and with inmates from all nations have taught the author that Christ does not need to be brought to prison through visitors, through evangelistic events, or through Christian outreach. He is already powerfully present in prison.
