Book Criminal Misconduct in Office

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeremy Horder
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-02-23
  • ISBN : 0192556878
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Criminal Misconduct in Office written by Jeremy Horder and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the criminal law be used to deter and punish corruption in politics: from employing family members at public expense to improper spending on elections, lobbying, and cronyism? How did so many MPs avoid facing charges after the 2009 government expenses scandal? In this book, Jeremy Horder tackles these questions and more. As well as offering the first treatment of the history, philosophy, and politics of the application of the offence of misconduct in office to Members of Parliament in England and Wales, Horder explains how political corruption might be dealt with in future, and how politicians could be held accountable for their actions so that they are deterred from betraying the public's trust. Use of the criminal law should not be the sole or even the main way to remedy all corruption in politics. Nevertheless, for too long the offence of misconduct in a public office has had an ambiguous status in the political realm. If we are to preserve the good health of government it must be seen as a constitutional fundamental. A charge of misconduct provides a way in which corrupt conduct on the part of legislators can be punished with an appropriate label, holding them to account for the misuse of power by reference to the standards of ordinary people. When other - civil law or regulatory - means prove insufficient, it should be possible for ordinary members of a jury, and not for Parliamentarians or other officials, to decide whether, for example, the expenditure of public money on legislators' private income and benefits amounts to a criminal abuse of the public's trust. This book offers an authoritative and accessible account of a 'bottom-up' (jury standards-led), as opposed to a 'top-down' (officials applying their own standards), approach to the role of the criminal law in constitutional contexts.

Book Breaking the Sound Barrier

Download or read book Breaking the Sound Barrier written by Amy Goodman and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The host of Democracy Now! breaks through the corporate media’s lies, sound bites, and silence in this New York Times–bestselling collection of articles. In place of the usual suspects—the “experts” who, in Amy Goodman’s words, “know so little about so much, explain the world to us, and get it so wrong”—this accessible, lively collection allows the voices the corporate media exclude and ignore to be heard loud and clear. From community organizers in New Orleans, to the courageous American soldiers who’ve said “no” to Washington’s wars, to victims of torture and police violence, we are given the extraordinary opportunity to hear ordinary people standing up and speaking out. Written with all of the fierce intelligence and passion for truth that millions have come to expect from Amy Goodman’s reportage, Breaking the Sound Barrier proves the power that independent journalism can have in the struggle for a better world, one in which ordinary citizens are the true experts of their own lives and communities. Praise for Amy Goodman and Breaking the Sound Barrier “Amy Goodman has taken investigative journalism to new heights.” —Noam Chomsky, leading public intellectual and author of Hopes and Prospects “Amy, as you will discover on every page of this book, knows the critical question for journalists is how close they are to the truth, not how close they are to power.” —From the foreword by Bill Moyers, author of Moyers on America “What journalism should be: beholden to the interests of people, not power and profit.” —Arundhati Roy, author of The End of Imagination “Those unfamiliar with Goodman’s work will discover a bold voice that refuses to mince words regardless of the topic or target, along with a wealth of behind-the-headlines reporting.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Colleen Moore

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeff Codori
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2012-03-13
  • ISBN : 0786449691
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Colleen Moore written by Jeff Codori and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-03-13 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colleen Moore (1899-1988) was one of the most popular and beloved stars of the American silent screen. Remembered primarily as a comedienne in such films as Ella Cinders (1926) and Orchids and Ermine (1927), Moore's career was also filled with dramatic roles that often reflected societal trends. A trailblazing performer, her legacy was somewhat overshadowed by the female stars that followed her, notably Louise Brooks and Clara Bow. An in-depth examination of Moore's early life and film career, the book reveals the ways in which her family and the times in which she lived influenced the roles she chose. Included are forewords written by film historian Joseph Yranski, a friend of the actress, and by Moore's stepdaughter, Judith Hargrave Coleman.

Book The Sandinista Revolution

Download or read book The Sandinista Revolution written by Mateo Jarquín and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sandinista Revolution and its victory against the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua gripped the United States and the world in the 1980s. But as soon as the Sandinistas were voted out of power in 1990 and the Iran Contra affair ceased to make headlines, it became, in Washington at least, a thing of the past. Mateo Jarquin recenters the revolution as a major episode in the history of Latin America, the international left, and the Cold War. Drawing on research in Nicaragua, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica, he recreates the perspective of Sandinista leaders in Managua and argues that their revolutionary project must be understood in international context. Because struggles over the Revolution unfolded transnationally, the Nicaraguan drama had lasting consequences for Latin American politics at a critical juncture. It also reverberated in Western Europe, among socialists worldwide, and beyond, illuminating global dynamics like the spread of democracy and the demise of a bipolar world dominated by two superpowers. Jarquin offers a sweeping analysis of the last left-wing revolution of the twentieth century, an overview of inter-American affairs in the 1980s, and an incisive look at the making of the post–Cold War order.
