Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this benchmark five-volume study, originally published between 1922 and 1955, Surendranath Dasgupta examines the principal schools of thought that define Indian philosophy. A unifying force greater than art, literature, religion, or science, Professor Dasgupta describes philosophy as the most important achievement of Indian thought, arguing that an understanding of its history is necessary to appreciate the significance and potentialities of India's complex culture. Volume II continues the examination of the Sankara school of Vedanta begun in Volume I, and also addresses the philosophy of the Yoga-Vasistha, speculations in the medical schools, and the philosophy of the Bhagavad-Gita.
Download or read book The History of the Book in South Asia written by Francesca Orsini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History of the Book in South Asia covers not only the various modern states that make up South Asia today but also a multitude of languages and scripts. For centuries it was manuscripts that dominated book production and circulation, and printing technology only began to make an impact in the late eighteenth century. Print flourished in the colonial period and in particular lithographic printing proved particularly popular in South Asia both because it was economical and because it enabled multi-script printing. There are now vibrant publishing cultures in the nation states of South Asia, and the essays in this volume cover the whole range from palm-leaf manuscripts to contemporary print culture.

Download or read book Essays on Violence written by Priyadarshini Vijaisri and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on Violence: Pollution, Sacrifice and Madness is an exploration of the intersecting histories of caste and violence in the Indian context foregrounding ideational and temporal continuities and deep linkages between ideas, processes and events by combing historical sources with ethnographic data. Traversing the diverse and conflicting strands in Indian traditions, it traces the centrality of the idea of violence in discourses on sacrificial violence, self, body, evil and danger and their reverberations in critical moments of Indian history. The discourse on caste violence is unpacked through analysis of concepts like danda, matsyanyaya and vadhoavadha, religious and textual exegesis of negation and demonization and historical sites to locate processes of transitions in cultures of violence via the Telangana armed uprising and imagined cartography of the incipient nation. By drawing attention to the nature of caste violence in postcolonial Andhra, the book offers glimpses into the emergence of contradictory pulls in the forging of caste identities, nationhood and the shifts in the subjectivity of outcastes within the context of repressive political culture of postcolonial democratic experience.

Download or read book Inca Origins written by Graeme R. Kearsley and published by Yelsraek Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first section of this work is a general review of some of the researches undertaken by the first Europeans who entered the Pacific and who readily perceived the contacts and cultural connections between Asia and Australia, South America and even Africa. The central chapters review the archaeology and associated references in South America with parallels included where appropriate from Asia and more usually with the Ancient Middle East. This section concentrates more on the Inca Origin myths as well as the many references in myth and legend showing that there must have been mariner contacts between Asia and South America probably over 5000 years before the arrival of the Europeans. The middle to last chapters deal with the many parallel cultural aspects that are reflected in the Near Middle East that are most likely the result of this cross-Pacific transfer through Oceania to South America that appear in the available archaeological and iconographical record as well as the evidence preserved in the local oral traditions in myths and legends where applicable.
