A suit brought by P. F. Meagher Son, the architects, against Peter Walsh was decided against them by a jury in Justice Manning's court last week. The architects were commissioned to make plans which Mr. Walsh refused to accept. He claimed that the plans were for a more expensive building than the one he contemplated build ing and for which he ordered plans drawn. In speaking of this a Chicago architect said that it was impossible for one of his profession to foretell what the bids of builders may be. Sometimes plans will be ordered for a building of certain dimensions and certain ornamentations, he said, with a limit as to cost. The architect may figure carefully and find his calculations within the limit. When the proposals are opened the bids may be of great variance with the figures of the architect. Sometimes the bids may greatly exceed the figures. Then the builder calculates on a big profit. Sometimes the figures are much below the estimated cost. Then the builder may have made a mistake. It is worthy of attention in any of its numerous characteristics, but the fact that it was built to become the chief abiding-place of health and comfort is apt to be overlooked. The sewerage of the town is the result of design and not of accident or circumstances, and the curse which attends the disposal of sewage in most other towns and cities is not known there. It is' now demonstrated that the waste' of houses need not be even an offense. Pullman is located 14 miles south of Chicago, and although only two years old, it con tains a population of about About houses have been built, or are in process of construction. All the build ing are of brick and constructed in as substantial a manner as possible. The plan of sewerage was determined upon, and the laying of sewers begun in the fall of 1880, under the supervision of Benezette Williams, engineer of the water and sewerage works for Pullman. Mr. Williams gave a detailed account of this system and its workings before the Society of Civil Engineers in Chicago, recently, and the facts in this account are taken from his paper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sanitary News, Vol. 5: Healthy Homes and Healthy Living, a Semi-Monthly Journal of Sanitary Science; November 1-April 15, 1885 The president announced that the convention was ready for business, and introduced Dr. Spiegelhalter, of the local committee, who informed the members of what had been done for their entertainment. He stated that the railroads had been very liberal in granting passes, and that the committee had been very generously treated by the business men. The gas companies would furnish gas for the street illumination through the fixtures used for the state fair. Several clubs had thrown open their houses for the members. Dr. Charles Smart, surgeon in the United States army, read the report of the sub-committee on incorporation, stating that the association would be organized under the laws of the district of Columbia, which required that twelve members of the association should be residents of the dis triot. The name as incorporated would remain the same, and its objects should be the advancement of sanitary science and the promotion of measures of public hygiene. The officers of the association would be a president, a first vice-president, a second vice-president, a secretary, a treas urer, and an executive committee of six, which should have charge of all disbursements.
