Book The Political Lives of Saints

Download or read book The Political Lives of Saints written by Angie Heo and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Arab Spring in 2011 and ISIS’s rise in 2014, Egypt’s Copts have attracted attention worldwide as the collateral damage of revolution and as victims of sectarian strife. Countering the din of persecution rhetoric and Islamophobia, The Political Lives of Saints journeys into the quieter corners of divine intercession to consider what martyrs, miracles, and mysteries have to do with the routine challenges faced by Christians and Muslims living together under the modern nation-state. Drawing on years of extensive fieldwork, Angie Heo argues for understanding popular saints as material media that organize social relations between Christians and Muslims in Egypt toward varying political ends. With an ethnographer’s eye for traces of antiquity, she deciphers how long-cherished imaginaries of holiness broker bonds of revolutionary sacrifice, reconfigure national sites of sacred territory, and pose sectarian threats to security and order. A study of tradition and nationhood at their limits, The Political Lives of Saints shows that Coptic Orthodoxy is a core domain of minoritarian regulation and authoritarian rule, powerfully reversing the recurrent thesis of its impending extinction in the Arab Muslim world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating and highly original contribution to the study of Egypt’s religious folklore. First published in Cairo during World War II, The Moulids of Egypt is a study of moulids, the popular Egyptian religious festivals celebrated by both Muslims and Christians in the first half of the twentieth century. The book talks in detail about the secular side of moulids, where sports, games, theatres, dancing, and laughter were as much part of the festivals as the religious processions and the whirling of dervishes. Some of the rites and customs analyzed here date from as far back as the Pharaonic period, but the moulids are gradually dying out; many of the 126 festivals described in Moulids of Egypt have since faded away, making the book of lasting interest.

Book Life of St Anthony of Egypt

Download or read book Life of St Anthony of Egypt written by St Athanasius of Alexandria and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-27 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biographic text of St. Anthony is presented complete in this edition for the reader's absorption and contemplation. First published in the 4th century A.D., Anthony the Great's biography was authored by Christian Saint Athanasius of Alexandria. Since its release, the book has helped spread the beliefs, practices and arduous faith of Anthony the Great. A significant progenitor of the monastic tradition, Saint Anthony lived an ascetic lifestyle in the arid lands of Egypt. Although not the earliest of religious figures committed to this tradition, through actions and preaching Anthony helped popularise and spread principles that would contribute heavily to the establishment of Christian monasteries in Europe and beyond. One event in St. Anthony's life was his encounter with the supernatural in the remote Egyptian desert. This occurrence, where the otherworldly presence tried to tempt him from his spartan philosophy of living, is much recreated in Western art and literature.

Book Christianizing Egypt

Download or read book Christianizing Egypt written by David Frankfurter and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does a culture become Christian, especially one that is heir to such ancient traditions and spectacular monuments as Egypt? This book offers a new model for envisioning the process of Christianization by looking at the construction of Christianity in the various social and creative worlds active in Egyptian culture during late antiquity. As David Frankfurter shows, members of these different social and creative worlds came to create different forms of Christianity according to their specific interests, their traditional idioms, and their sense of what the religion could offer. Reintroducing the term “syncretism” for the inevitable and continuous process by which a religion is acculturated, the book addresses the various formations of Egyptian Christianity that developed in the domestic sphere, the worlds of holy men and saints’ shrines, the work of craftsmen and artisans, the culture of monastic scribes, and the reimagination of the landscape itself, through processions, architecture, and the potent remains of the past. Drawing on sermons and magical texts, saints’ lives and figurines, letters and amulets, and comparisons with Christianization elsewhere in the Roman empire and beyond, Christianizing Egypt reconceives religious change—from the “conversion” of hearts and minds to the selective incorporation and application of strategies for protection, authority, and efficacy, and for imagining the environment.

Book The Lives of the Saints of Egypt

Download or read book The Lives of the Saints of Egypt written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Saints of Egypt: Together With the Principal of the European Saints, According to the Roman Catholic Church: Selected From the Rev. Alban Butler's Lives of the Saints, Which Have Been Published With the Approbation of the Roman Catholic Bishops of Philadelphia and Baltimo To lead a life of piety, even great piety, we need not retire into a wilderness, nor enter a cloister. We may remain in the world, in any honest station, exposed as it may be to temptations, and yet lead a life of piety. Where there is such room for the exercise of all the nobler virtues, as there is in the world, there the soul may be made to shine forth in its full lustre; and though our sanctity may not be so established, by the working of miracles, as among the saints in the desert, yet shall we be the no less near to heaven, by our lives of piety, nor the less sure of a heavenly crown. Nothing can be more beneficial, in order to practise such piety, than the fre quent reading of the lives of the saints. St. Francis of Sales and St. Francis Borgia, 850. Were not saints of Egypt, yet the publisher thought proper to insert their lives in this volume, as they are so useful for all classes of readers, and have such tendency to instil sentiments of piety.
