Book Robert Louis Stevenson and the Pictorial Text

Download or read book Robert Louis Stevenson and the Pictorial Text written by Richard J. Hill and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson and the Pictorial Text explores the genesis, production and the critical appreciation of the illustrations to the fiction of Robert Louis Stevenson. Stevenson is one of the most copied and interpreted authors of the late nineteenth century, especially his novels Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. These interpretations began with the illustration of his texts in their early editions, often with Stevenson’s express consent, and this book traces Stevenson’s understanding and critical responses to the artists employed to illustrate his texts. In doing so, it attempts to position Stevenson as an important thinker and writer on the subject of illustrated literature, and on the marriage of literature and visual arts, at a moment preceding the dawn of cinema, and the rejection of such popular tropes by modernist writers of the early twentieth century.

Book Six Months in the Sandwich Islands

Download or read book Six Months in the Sandwich Islands written by Isabella L. Bird and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic of Hawaiian literature offers a charming glimpse at the splendid and fascinating world of pre–American Hawaii. Isabella Lucy Bird won fame in her own time as the most remarkable woman traveler of the nineteenth century, and Six Months in the Sandwich Isles, in which she describes her sojourn in Hawaii in 1873, is one of the gems of Pacific literature. It is safe to say that no other book about Hawaii surpasses it in fascination. Much of the charm of Isabella's writing is due to her use of personal letters for conveying her her experiences and her impressions. The thirty–one letters that compose the book were written to her beloved sister Henrietta, who dutifully stayed at home in Edinburgh to take care of the household while Isabella was away on her travels. The book is an authentic record of daily life in Hawaii in the late nineteenth century. It describes a life style during the brief reign of King Lunalilo, not too may years before the sad reign of Queen Liliuokalani ended her dethronement by revolution. Isabella Bird met royalty, missionaries, cowboys, and ordinary, everyday Hawaiians. It is fortunate that she left such a vivid narrative of her Hawaiian Interlude.

Book Residence of Twenty One Years in the Sandwich Islands

Download or read book Residence of Twenty One Years in the Sandwich Islands written by Hiram Bingham, AM and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating personal account from one of the first Westerners to live in Hawaii. A Residence of Twenty-One Years in the Sandwich Islands, by the Reverend Hiram Bingham, was first printed in New York in 1847. The book provides a panoramic history of Hawaii from before its discovery in 1778 by Captain James Cook up to 1845. Hiram Bingham became Hawaii's most notable missionary, an adviser to kings and queens, and was truly one of Hawaii's most influential historical figures. His work did much to transform old Hawaii into a new Hawaii. He was a child of his time, an ardent advocate of the Calvinistic Christianity of New England. He was unsympathetic to the traditional Hawaiian culture, yet his book tells us an enormous amount about Hawaiians as well as the missionary endeavors of himself and his colleagues. Personally Bingham was a man of great courage in a world of danger. Whaleers and their bottles of grog, the condemnation of those who opposed him, his worries about backsliding chiefs, wayward boy and girl converts, monarchs who liked alcohol—all these were very real problems to Bingham and his colleagues, amusing though they may seem to us today.

Download or read book Life in the Sandwich Islands written by Henry T. Cheever and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in the Sandwich Islands: Or the Heart of the Pacific, as It Was and Is We call this book The Heart of the Pacific, for two reasons: first, because the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands, which form its subject-matter, hold about the same relation to other parts of the Pacific as the heart does to the rest of the human body. Second, because these Islands bid fair to become the religious Protestant Heart of the great Ocean, whose pulsations at different times we have herein marked and interpreted. Although independent and whole of itself, it has a connection which will be seen with The Island-World of the Pacific. The writer believes it may fulfil a useful part, in directing the general interest now felt in the young Island-Kingdom of Hawaii. The perpetuity of the pure Hawaiian race there is daily becoming more and more doubtful. But, as it has been remarked of New Zealand, the natives, though melting away, are not lost. They are emerging into another and a. better class. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Boki allowed that the teaching of the Romish faith there would tend to civil strife. But I cannot here go through the narrative of subsequent events connected with this: but such as deserve it must be given rather in the order of time in which they occurred, involving various actors in the progress of things for years. As the captain landed the Romish teachers and artisans without the permission of the government, and refused to obey the queen's orders communicated to him by Boki, to take them away, they were left in precarious circumstances at Honolulu, and received favor from Boki. Before I left Lahaina, an outrage occurred there, on the 23d of October, 1827, the commencement of a new crusade against the tabu. Wahinepio, late governess, had died, as also her son, Kahalaia, and Geo. P. T., his rival, almost simultaneously, in 1826. Hoapili succeeded Wahinepio as governor by the appointment of Kaahumanu, and was disposed to maintain her policy. Several women, belonging to his jurisdiction, the governor learned, were, in violation of the tabu, or government prohibition, onboard an English whaler, the John Palmer, in Lahaina roadstead. Hoapili demanded of the captain, an American, to set them on shore or permit his men to fetch them: but he would do neither. The governor condescended to reason with him, and said, "When your men desert your ships and come on shore, and you apply for them, we deliver them up without hesitation. These women have broken our laws, and you would take them away. It is our right to require that you deliver up to me our people who violate our laws." Repeating this reasonable demand, day after day, unheeded, and finding the vessel about to take her anchor, and the captain being...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes in Hawaii, or Life in the Sandwich Islands As I have been induced by kind friends to give publicity in this form to my notes and observations while on my journey to Hawaii and stay there, I must ask them and others who may care to read them, to be lenient in criticism, and to remem ber my only wish is to interest by telling them a little of this small Kingdom in the Pacific, generally known only as the most encouraging exemplification of the noble efforts of missionaries to civilize and christianize a savage and voluptuous race. Alas, for this, the finest example of self-sacrificing men and women, for the boast is, sad to say only a boast; and alas, as the group of Islands which Captain Cook discoveredtin 1776 - and on one of which, Hawaii - he was murdered on his second visit in 1778, at Kealakekua Bay.
