Book Dark Language

Download or read book Dark Language written by Loren L. Qualls and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2009 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Dark Language, Loren Qualls discusses how the post-rebellion genre of fiction takes a critical examination of African Americans after the Civil Rights Movement, when African Americans crossed the color barrier into every aspect of American culture. Yet the question remains: Who did the slave become? The middle class. This neo-African American is born with liberties that their predecessor was not afforded. The post-rebellion genre of African American literature comes from the freedom in knowing choice, but this genre expresses the consistent anxiety, paranoia and struggle for an identity and way of expression. A characteristic that differentiates this genre from other periods in African American history is its detachment from traditional icons and ideologies of African American culture. The generation that perpetuates this characteristic does not exhibit the same rudiment in religious sacrament or a common commitment to ideals of equality. Although African Americans have been bound by the goal of liberty of the individual, they fail in attempts at establishing group identification through any other mass movement or politics. The genre examines the African American being exploited and exploiting themselves and exploiting others all based on the concept of race."--BOOK JACKET.

Book A Grammar of Mavea

Download or read book A Grammar of Mavea written by Valérie Guérin and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spoken on Mavea Island by approximately 32 people, Mavea is an endangered Oceanic language of Vanuatu. This work provides grammatical descriptions of this hitherto undescribed language. Fourteen chapters, containing more than 1,400 examples, cover topics in the phonology and morphosyntax of Mavea, with an emphasis on the latter. Of particular interest are examples of individual speaker variation presented throughout the grammar; the presence of three linguo-labials (still used today by a single speaker) that were unexpectedly found before the rounded vowel /o/; and a chapter on numerals and the counting system, which have long been replaced by Bislama’s but are remembered by a handful of speakers. Most of the grammatical descriptions derive from a corpus of texts of various genres (conversations, traditional stories, personal histories, etc.) gathered during the author’s fieldwork, conducted for eleven months between 2005 and 2007.

Book The Loom of Language

Download or read book The Loom of Language written by Frederick Bodmer and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1985 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an informative introduction to language: its origins in the past, its growth through history, and its present use for communication between peoples. It is at the same time a history of language, a guide to foreign tongues, and a method for learning them. It shows, through basic vocabularies, family resemblances of languages -- Teutonic, Romance, Greek -- helpful tricks of translation, key combinations of roots and phonetic patterns. It presents by common-sense methods the most helpful approach to the mastery of many languages; it condenses vocabulary to a minimum of essential words; it simplifies grammar in an entirely new way; and it teaches a language as it is actually used in everyday life.

Book William J Gedney s Comparative Tai Source Book

Download or read book William J Gedney s Comparative Tai Source Book written by Thomas John Hudak and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-12-03 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides accurate and reliable data from 1,159 common cognates found in 19 dialects from the Tai language family. Originally collected by noted Tai linguist, the late William J. Gedney, the data are organized into the three branches of the Tai language family, the Southwestern, the Central, and the Northern, to facilitate comparisons among the various sound systems within the individual branches and within the Tai language family as a whole. Supplementing the cognates are phonological descriptions of each of the dialects. Included among the nineteen dialects are Siamese, White Tai, Black Tai, Shan, Lue, Yay, Saek, and dialects found at Leiping, Lungming, Pingsiang, and Ningming in China. The meticulous attention paid to consonants, vowels, and tones found in each cognate will allow for further dialect studies, for the investigation of questions concerning the tripartite division of the Tai language family, and for the continuing investigation into the reconstruction of the Proto-Tai language family and its wider genetic relationships.

Book excerpt: The experience of reproductive loss raises a series of profoundly theological questions: how can God have a plan for my life? Why didn’t God answer my prayers? How can I have hope after such an experience? Who am I after such a loss? Sadly, these are questions that, along with reproductive loss, have largely been ignored in theology. Karen O’Donnell tackles these questions head on, drawing on her own experiences of repeated reproductive loss as she re-conceives theology from the perspective of the miscarrying person. Offering a fresh, original, and creative approach to theology, O’Donnell explores the complexity of the miscarrying body and its potential for theological revelation. She offers a re-conception of theologies of providence, prayer, hope, and the body as she reimagines theology out of these messy origins. This book is for those who have experiences such losses and those who minister to them. But it is also for all those who want to encounter a creative and imaginative approach to theology and the life of faith in our messy, complex world.
