I can only relay some of the message I received. I don’t know why I was selected, but I can guarantee you, we are not alone. My story begins as a young Hispanic boy trying to overcome racism. I was born in 1971 and had some speech and learning disabilities. My father fell in love with my mother when they first met in a small church in Frederick, Colorado. My mother was teaching Sunday school. My father was one of her students. He was twelve years old and she was seventeen. When my father told the story he would always say, “I told the other students that someday I’d marry her.” On his fifteenth birthday, my father proposed to my mother, who was one of fourteen children in an abusive home. Money was always tight in our own large family, but there was plenty of love. My epiphany came years later: I replied, “It’s about thirty feet above your van.” It quickly shined a beam of light on the top of the van, just for an instant, then quickly flew away. Our phones disconnected in the middle of all the excitement so I quickly called him back. “Did you see it shoot off?” He replied, “What?” I continued, “After our phones disconnected a beam of light came down on the top of the van. Didn’t you see it?” Writing this book has been therapeutic and an attempt to put this in my past so I can move on.

Most of us understand grief as sorrow experienced after a loss—the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or a change in life circumstance. Breeshia Wade approaches grief as something that is bigger than what's already happened to us—as something that is connected to what we fear, what we love, and what we aspire toward. Drawing on stories from her own life as a Black woman and from the people she has midwifed through the end of life, she connects sorrow not only to specific incidents but also to the ongoing trauma that is part and parcel of systemic oppression. The book was first published under the pseudonym N.W. Clerk as Lewis wished to avoid identification as the author. Though republished in 1963 after his death under his own name, the text still refers to his wife as "H" (her first name, which she rarely used, was Helen). The book is compiled from the four notebooks which Lewis used to vent and explore his grief. He illustrates the everyday trials of his life without Joy and explores fundamental questions of faith and theodicy. Lewis's step-son (Joy's son) Douglas Gresham points out in his 1994 introduction that the indefinite article 'a' in the title makes it clear that Lewis's grief is not the quintessential grief experience at the loss of a loved one, but one individual's perspective among countless others. The book helped inspire a 1985 television movie Shadowlands, as well as a 1993 film of the same name. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, lay theologian and Christian apologist. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.
