Book The Love of the Sacred Heart

Download or read book The Love of the Sacred Heart written by St. Mechtilde and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All lovers of the Sacred Heart were delighted to see in the year of grace 1920 the long wished for canonization of Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque, whom God raised up in recent centuries to revive the fire of devotion to the divine Heart of our Lord, which had well-nigh been extinguished by the frost and drought of the Jansenist heresy. The devotion to the Sacred Heart is too often spoken of and thought of as a "modern" devotion, and in one sense it is such. The life-work of St. Margaret Mary has not only given that sweetest of devotions a much greater vogue and a deeper intensity throughout the world, but it has even in our own times led to still further and wider developments, such as the beautiful and providential practice, whose world-wide spread we owe to the blessing and encouragement of Pope Saint Pius X-I mean the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in the home, which, thank God, is becoming yearly more popular in our own country. But the present book will show that in another sense the devotion is by no means "modern." As will be seen, the first part consists of copious translations from the marvellous mystical revelations of a lover of the Sacred Heart of a much earlier century, the Benedictine nun St. Mechtilde (1241-1298), whose enraptured utterances surpass in some respects those of her better known friend and disciple the great St. Gertrude, and whose significance as the type of mystic theology has been immortalized by Dante in his mighty epic. It will not fail to be observed how extraordinarily similar a great deal of the inspired language and profound imagery of the Saint of the thirteenth century is to that of the one who was canonized last year; although I am not aware that there is evidence of Margaret Mary having been a student of the works of her illustrious predecessor. It is surely both significant and instructive that our divine Lord deigned to make known the mysteries and treasures of the unfathomable abyss of His divine Love in a manner so similar, often identical, to two of His chosen spouses, at an interval of several centuries. The pious translator of the following treatises, however, very truly remarks that in the revelations of the earlier of these Saints, the mystic doctrines of the Sacred Heart are presented more especially for the guidance and edification of the chosen few, especially of the inmates of the cloister, called to the more hidden life. On the other hand, the cult of the Sacred Heart in these last three centuries has become, and is becoming daily more and more, the common property of all the children of the Church, of the laity as well as of the clergy and the religious, of the working man and woman as well as of the theologian, and even of the little children as well as of Christians of mature years. And that recent form of it to which I have alluded above -the Enthronement in the home, whether the palace or the cottage-has further widened it to become the property and the privilege not merely of the individual soul, but of the whole Christian family. May every reader of these pages pray for her who in the midst of grave sickness and pain during her last illness compiled them out of her abounding love to the Sacred Heart of our Blessed Lord.

Book The Glories of the Sacred Heart

Download or read book The Glories of the Sacred Heart written by Henry Edward Manning and published by . This book was released on 1876 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Sacred Heart is, as Simeon prophesied of Jesus Himself, 'Signum cui contradicetur.' Like the title of His Blessed Mother, who is in very truth 'Mother of God, ' it has drawn to itself all the assaults of heresy. For it is a divine test of faith in the mystery of the Word made Flesh, 'ut revelentur ex multis cordibus cogitationes.' Those who have trusted with a yearning hope that the faith of Englishmen, in the Incarnation at least, was firm and clear were saddened and silenced when the pilgrimage to Paray-le-Monial elicited from some of the highest sources of the established religion a profession of simple Nestorianism. It was then that the first fifty pages in this book were published. Having been out of print for some time, they are now reprinted, as the doctrinal foundation of all that follows. The devotion of the Sacred Heart has two aspects: the one as the centre of all dogma; the other as the source of the deepest devotion. In this latter aspect it reveals to us the personal love of our Divine Redeemer towards each and every one for whom He died. It is a manifestation of His pity, tenderness, compassion, and mercy to sinners and to penitents. Nevertheless, its chief characteristic and its dominant note is His disappointment at the returns we make to Him for His love, and above all, His divine displeasure at the faults and sins of those who are specially consecrated at His service. He seems to be sadly upbraiding us with the three doubting questions which He put to Peter, 'Lovest thou Me?' and to be looking upon us as He turned and looked on him, when he had thrice denied his Master. Into this part of the devotion of the Sacred Heart I have not ventured. It has already been treated so profusely by others, and by many of whom I have only to learn; it is in itself so deep and intimately related to the personal life and mind of each, that I have always felt it better to use but few suggestive words rather than to draw out devotional acts, which to the writer are no doubt spontaneous, natural, and real, but to the reader may be a burden like Saul's armour to David. In the following pages, therefore, I have intentionally confined myself to the dogmatic side of the devotion; and for the following reasons. I believe firmly that when divine truth is fully and duly apprehended it generates devotion; that one cause of shallowness in the spiritual life is a superficial apprehension of the dogma of the Incarnation; and that one divine purpose in the institution and diffusion of the devotion of the Sacred Heart, in these last times, is to reawaken in the minds of men the consciousness of their personal relation to a Divine Master. He has foretold the dimness and coldness of these latter days: 'The Son of Man, when He cometh, shall He find, think you, faith on the earth? (S. Luke xviii. 8.)' 'Because iniquity hath abounded, the charity of many shall grow cold (S. Matt. xxiv. 12).' In that day the disciples of the Sacred Heart at least will 'know whom they have believed.'"--

Book excerpt: Excerpt: The Book of the Sacred Heart IN order to excite Christians to honour the Sacred Heart of Jesus, it will be well to remind them of the words spoken by our Lord in one of His appearances to the Venerable Margaret Mary Alacoque, professed nun of the Order of the Visitation-" My Heart has within it an overmastering desire to communicate itself to souls. Do thou help me, dear daughter, to give vent to this fire. Announce, and cause others to announce to the world that I will put no bounds to the graces, which I will give to those souls, who come to seek them in this My Heart." To carry out this object, the following are some of the devotions in use among the faithful. CONFRATERNITY OF THE SACRED HEART. One of the chief means of honouring the Sacred Heart of our Lord is the Confraternity erected in almost all parts of the world. The object of the Confraternities of the Sacred Heart, as specified in the paper given to those who are aggregated to that at Rome, is to "augment ever more and more the glory of Jesus, who died on the Cross for us, and of His loving Heart, all on fire as it is with love to us in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar, and to make amends for the offences committed against Him in this Sacrament of His love." To effect this purpose, those aggregated to the Confraternity, according to the instructions given to the Venerable Margaret Mary, should communicate on the first Friday of every month, with the intention of offering their communion to make amends for the outrages committed everywhere against the Blessed Sacrament. They also should recite every day a Pater, Ave, and Credo, in honour of the Sacred Heart, with the following ejaculation: O sweetest Heart of my Jesus, I pray, Make me love Thee more tenderly day by day. Summary of Indulgences granted by various Sovereign Pontiffs to Members of the Confraternity.
