Book A Continental View Johannes Cocceius s Federal Theology of the Sabbath

Download or read book A Continental View Johannes Cocceius s Federal Theology of the Sabbath written by Casey B. Carmichael and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carmichael argues that Johannes Cocceius's theology of the Sabbath serves as a window through which one can view more clearly his federal theology or covenant theology. Covenant theology was the most distinctive feature of his theology. Moreover, Cocceius spent a notable portion of his life engaging in the Leiden Sabbath Controversies from 1655 to 1659, which played a key role in the split of the Reformed Dutch Republic into two socio-political blocs—Cocceians and Voetians. So far scholars have tended to overlook this critical phase in Cocceius's theological development. Carmichael sheds light on it by looking at the theological texts that Cocceius wrote that absorbed his attention during this significant period. Casey Carmichael examines first the evolution of the problem of the Sabbath in Cocceius's theological tradition—Reformed Orthodoxy—in Chapters 2–4 and second the development of Cocceius's doctrine of the Sabbath, structured around the Leiden Sabbath Controversies, in Chapters 5–8.

Book excerpt: When it comes to the doctrine of the Sabbath, many are confused. Some are so confused that they are asking how many commandments are there, nine or ten? Has the fourth commandment been abrogated or is it still binding? If the fourth commandment stands, then on what day are we to observe the Sabbath, on Saturday or Sunday? Or does it really matter just as long as we take off one day in the week? Others have come to think that all the commandments have been abrogated. Is this true? A more searching question is asked, Is the typical Christian community correct in observing the Sabbath on the first day of the week? Or does the fourth commandment mandate the Sabbath to be observed on seventh day? Still others are asking, is the Sabbath Day and the Lords Day same or are they different? As one can readily see, these questions are troubling to many professing Christians. They are confused as the doctrine of the Sabbath is no longer addressed. However, the more searching question is, if the fourth commandment stands, have we provoked our Lord to anger in failing to observer the Sabbath as we ought? If we are to observe it, then how is the Sabbath to be observed? It is the writers conviction that we are not only to observe the Sabbath, but also until we do, there will be no revival in this country no matter how fervently we may fast and pray. The doctrine of the Sabbath is essential to the life of the church and the liberties we once enjoy as a nation before it was infected with this liberation theology. We must heed the divine mandate coming down from God to Remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy (Exodus 20:8).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many are the contentions and suspicions surrounding the Sabbath and its corollaries. Inadequate answers and the lack of answers only fuel these contentions and suspicions. There is an urgent need for a thoughtful and critical response to the Sabbath and the crisis which has characterized it. This response must demonstrate no respect for any particular denomination, but can stand the test of biblical integrity. The author attempts to pellucidly address the Sabbath and all the factors upon which it is contingent, putting to rest the anxieties and empowering those who genuinely desire answers to this age old issue, regardless of their denominational affiliation. The scope and depth with which the author examines the Sabbath provides indispensable information regarding Israel and the Church, and their relationship to each other. The Sabbath injunction forms part of the Ten Commandments, which were given within the context of a specific covenant. The goal of this investigation is to determine the covenant in which the Sabbath injunction is found and whether or not it is binding for Christians. It is the author's prayer that as you examine the Sabbath and the various factors akin to it, that God will give you the spirit of revelation, wisdom, and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives on the Sabbath presents in point-counterpoint form the four most common views of the Sabbath commandment that have arisen throughout church history, representing the major positions held among Christians today. Skip MacCarty (Andrews University) defends the Seventh-day view which argues the fourth commandment is a moral law of God requiring us to keep the seventh day (Saturday) holy. It must therefore remain the day of rest and worship for Christians. Jospeh A Pipa (Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary) backs the Christian Sabbath view which reasons that ever since the resurrection of Christ, the one day in seven to be kept holy is the first day of the week. Craig L. Blomberg (Denver Seminary) supports the Fulfillment view which says that since Christ has brought the true Sabbath rest into the present, the Sabbath commands of the Old Testament are no longer binding on believers. Charles P. Arand (Concordia Seminary) upholds the Lutheran view that the Sabbath commandment was given to Jews alone and does not concern Christians. Rest and worship are still required but not tied to a particular day.

Book The Sabbath as Rest and Hope for the People of God

Download or read book The Sabbath as Rest and Hope for the People of God written by Guy Prentiss Waters and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Short Study of the Sabbath from Creation to Consummation When it comes to the Sabbath, Christians have different ideas on what it means and how to observe it. For many people, it is a day to go to church and have fellowship with other believers. What they often miss, though, is that the Sabbath is intricately tied to rest and worship—both of which ultimately point to the Lord as our creator and redeemer. In this addition to the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, Guy Prentiss Waters offers an introductory study of the Sabbath from the creation of the world to the consummation of all things when Jesus returns. He shows how the Sabbath is observed through the major themes and genres of the Bible—creation, law, prophets, Jesus, and the apostles—and how that applies to our lives today. Waters teaches us about the Sabbath's full restoration in the new heavens and the new earth and its continual reminder of the covenant that God has made with his people. Written for New Believers and Seasoned Saints Alike: Perfect for laypersons, pastors, college and seminary students, and academics Practical: Examines how the Sabbath is relevant to the church now as well as how it will be restored in the new heavens and the new earth Short Studies in Biblical Theology: Part of a series designed to give readers accessible volumes on God's word

Book The Sabbath in the Old Testament and the Intertestamental Period

Download or read book The Sabbath in the Old Testament and the Intertestamental Period written by Daniel Bediako and published by Biblical Research Institute. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the opening lines of the Hebrew Bible to the last book of the canon of the Christian church, the Sabbath features prominently as a time of rest, fellowship for believers, and particularly worship of God, reminding humanity of His work of creation and redemption and touching on other important themes of Scripture. During the last two decades, Jewish and Christian scholars, theologians, historians, and practitioners have demonstrated renewed interest in the Sabbath. This two-volume set is a scholarly contribution to the discussion of the Sabbath from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective. Each volume explores the biblical concept and theology of the Sabbath and implications for Christians in the twenty-first century. Authors from around the world have contributed to each volume, providing diversity of perspective to the central Sabbath theme. Volume 1 covers the exegesis of key Old Testament passages on the Sabbath and examines the Sabbath theology found in major sections of the Hebrew Bible and the Jewish literature of the Intertestamental period (Second Temple period).

Book The Law the Sabbath and New Covenant Christianity

Download or read book The Law the Sabbath and New Covenant Christianity written by Anthony Buzzard and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians today seem uncertain as to the difference between the Old and New Covenant ways of approaching God prescribed for different periods of history. Paul labored hard, in the face of constant opposition from Jews, to bring both Jew and Gentile into unity on the basis of the one New Covenant. The same resistance to full freedom in the New Covenant is found whenever sections of the Church insist for salvation on elements of the Old Covenant not binding under the New. This book is based on the authors extensive study of what God and the Messiah require of us under the terms of the New Covenant ratified by the blood of Jesus. Our aim is to unify believers under the banner of belief in the One God of Israel, in Jesus as the supernaturally begotten Son of God and in the hope of the coming Kingdom of God at the return of Jesus. Within this theological framework, what is the New Testament teaching in regard to the Sabbath, Holy Days, and the Law of Moses? What under the New Covenant is meant by the obedience which leads to salvation? What indeed is the saving Gospel? Our plea is for unity based on the Gospel teaching of Christ as presented by New Testament Scripture. There is a simplicity and freedom in Gods requirements since the coming of His Son the Messiah. Our hope is that current barriers to unity, based on an unfortunate mixing of the two covenants, will be removed so that the world may know that the Church is indeed one, rather than a confusing assemblage of thousands of denominations in conflict.

Book excerpt: "Elce-Junior "Thunder" Lauriston has written a must-read treatise for anyone considering a serious study on issues related to the Sabbath. What Martin Luther's 95 Theses did for the advancement of the Reformation, Elce's 16 Propositions will similarly cause much debate within the contemporary evangelical Christian Church. I have studied numerous and varied sources, from Samuele Bacchiocchi's From Sabbath to Sunday to D.A. Carson's From Sabbath to Lord's Day covering the same topic, but none have succinctly and concisely given a synopsis of the Gospel and the Sabbath in such a convincing manner. I know that this work will bring many people to know the Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus, more intimately and help them find rest in Him."--- Pastor Patrick A. Book The Sabbath Under Crossfire

Download or read book The Sabbath Under Crossfire written by Samuele Bacchiocchi and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Http://www.biblicalperspectives.com/books/sabbath_under_xfire/ Few Biblical doctrines have been under a constant crossfire of controversy during Christian history as has the Sabbath. A bibliographic survey indicates that since the sixteenth-century Reformation, over 2000 books, besides countless articles, have been published on this subject. In recent times, the controversy has been rekindled by at least three significant developments: (1) Numerous doctoral dissertations and articles have been written by Sunday keeping scholars who argue for the abrogation of the Sabbath in the New Testament and for the apostolic origin of Sunday. (2) The abandonment of the Sabbath promoted by former Sabbatarian organizations like the Worldwide Church of God and other independent congregations. These former Sabbatarian Christians who in the past championed the observance of the Sabbath, now reject the day as a Mosaic, Old Covenant ordinance, no longer binding upon "New Covenant" Christians. (3) The newly released Pastoral Letter Dies Domini of Pope John Paul II that calls for a revival of Sunday observance. Dies Domini is a historical document of enormous significance because the Pope grounds the moral obligation of Sunday observance in the Sabbath Commandment itself, by making Sunday the embodiment and "full expression" of the Sabbath. By making Sunday observance a moral imperative rooted in the Decalogue, the Pope calls upon all Christians to "strive to ensure that civil legislation respects their duty to keep Sunday holy." In The Sabbath Under Crossfire, Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi examines the recent attacks against the Sabbath within the larger historical context of the origin and development of the anti-Sabbath theology. An understanding of how the abrogation view of the Sabbath began and developed through the centuries, is essential for comprehending why the Sabbath is still under crossfire today. The book analyzes in a systematic way the most common arguments used to negate the continuity and validity of the Sabbath for today. With compelling Biblical reasoning, it unmasks the fallacies of the attempts made to reduce the Sabbath to a Mosaic institution, fulfilled by Christ and condemned by Paul. The final chapter, "Rediscovering the Sabbath," offers an informative update on the rediscovery of the Sabbath by numerous religious groups, scholars, and church leaders. Most important of all, this book will enrich your understanding of how the Sabbath can enable you to experience the Savior's presence, peace, and rest in your life. - Introduction; 1. Pope John Paul II and the Sabbath; 2. The Sabbath: Creational or Ceremonial?; 3. The Sabbath and the New Covenant; 4. The Savior and the Sabbath; 5. Paul and the Law; 6. Paul and the Sabbath; 7.
