Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School in the United States Another illustration of our uniform quantitative attitude is to be found in the development of our common school course of study from the three R's. That it has been a case of quan titative rather than qualitative enrichment goes without say ing This line of enrichment has run through the interest ing fields of history, geography, algebra, physiology with all of its hygiene and temperance addenda, drawing, object lessons, vocal music, nature study, literature, language work and ele mentary science. Now the loudest cry is rising from every educational assembly for deliverance from the tyranny of this whole quantitative procedure. We have not abandoned our idea] of enrichment, but we can procure real enrichment only through the elimination of all that is unnecessary or antiquated in our present course of study. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching in Rural Schools The United States Census Bureau classifies as living under rural conditions all persons living in the Open country and in towns and villages having less that 2500 inhabitants. On this basis, according to the census of 1910, per cent Of the population of the United States was classed as rural, and the figures probably have not changed materially since that date. In the last printed report of the United States Commissioner of Education it was stated that, during the preceding year, per cent of the children enrolled in the public schools of the United States were enrolled in schools classified by the Census Bureau as rural, while of the teachers employed, 60 per cent were employed in these rural communities. Approximately eighteen million children were enrolled in these same schools, and about 95 per cent of these were in the elementary grades. Book The American Rural School

Download or read book The American Rural School written by Harold Waldstein Foght and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Rural School: Its Characteristics, Its Future, and Its Problems This book is intended for rural school teachers, superintendents, and schoolboard members; for teachers' reading circles, normal school training classes, and all the public at large who arc interested in the profound movement to make our American rural life richer and its labor more effective by means of schools adapted to the changing needs of rural society and the demands of modern life. So far as the public school is concerned the term movement is here used advisedly. It is not used in the destructive sense. It does not seek out a new base for school conduct, nor does it run counter to established laws of life and growth. On the contrary, it is constructive in its use. It aims at fundamental harmony by facing the rural school away from the many artificial interests which have hampered the usefulness of this institution in the past. Indeed, the new movement strives to place the school where the school inherently belongs - in the midst of natural interests where it can prepare the youth for sane, wholesome lives on the farm - the only normal American life of our day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School, 1922: Survey, of New York State Educational Achievement The report of this section of the survey is distinctive for the following reasons: It furnishes an excellent illustration of the value of standardized tests in the study of schools. The facts that have been secured with reference to the reading situation in the rural schools of the State should be invaluable to administrative and supervisory officers and they should also arouse teachers and patrons to the need of securing more adequate results from the work of the schools in this subject. Reading is of basic importance. Not only does it condition progress in other school subjects, but deficiency in it may be a barrier to the intelligent discharge of the duties of citizenship. The elementary school has no more important subject to offer the children and the results should be better than are now being obtained. The use of the intelligence and standardized tests with such large numbers of pupils through so many grades, and in all sections of the State, should furnish valuable data for those who are interested in the relative effectiveness of rural and urban schools. The survey of the rural schools of New York State and the printing of this report were made possible through a grant from the Commonwealth Fund. Download or read book Successful Teaching in Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by Marvin Summers Pittman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Teaching in Rural Schools IF our American public school system is to provide adequately for the education of all boys and girls, the rural schools of the United States must be improved. It is important in the consideration of this problem that we discuss methods of finance and of administration. It is even more important that well-trained teachers be placed in every classroom, and that those already at work in rural schools grow increasingly more efficient. In this volume the author has presented to rural school teachers a record of achievement by a group of rural school-teachers which is not only enlightening but in spiring. The book could not have been written by one who approached the problem as a theorist. It is out of a rich experience in achieving the ideals set forth, that Dr. Pittman has written to the rural school-teachers of the United States. Book The Rural School from Within Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rural School from Within Classic Reprint written by Marion Greenleaf Kirkpatrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School From Within In no line of work has there been so much aimless effort for improvement as in the rural schools. It would be unkind and untrue to say that this effort has not always been made by intelligent men and women, but it would not be at variance with truth to say that many who have written in behalf of the rural schools have been those who had little first hand experience with the subject which they set out to improve. With the belief that a rural school education and nearly a quarter of a century spent in teaching in and adjacent to the rural schools may be a partial preparation for so great an undertaking as rural school improvement, the author offers this work, "The Rural School from Within." Several of the chapters are devoted to actual experiences which are believed to be typical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Better Rural Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Better Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Betts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Rural Schools The rural school presents the most important problem in American education. In it are more than six million children coming from one great industry, agriculture the most fundamental and important of all industries. Under present conditions this occupation calls for an unusual degree of intelligence and skill. It demands the highest type of business management and industrial ability. And with the success of agriculture is linked the welfare of every American citizen, whatever be his status or vocation. Yet the rural school, the sole educational opportunity of most of our agricultural population, has been grossly neglected. In the midst of universal progress, it has been allowed to lag behind town and city schools. Abandoned to relative inefficiency, it has failed to hold the loyalty and) support of its constituency. The victim of changing social and industrial conditions, it has dwindled in size, diminished in influence, and lost step with the spirit of the times. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Consolidated Rural School These remarkable transformations are worthy of the closest study, interpretation, and publicity. Isolated reports, surveys, and single chapters fail to do justice to the theme and fail also in acquainting many people with this type of solution of the great rural-school problem. We greatly need a first-class, thoroughgoing book, based on investigation, nation-wide acquaintance with this type of school, and thor oughly and cautiously worked out and illustrated. Such a volume few busy educators have time to produce. Feeling the need, however, the editor has done his best in producing such a volume by the method of co-operation of specialists found successful in other volumes of this series. We do not hesitate to pioneer and open up the way for more thorough going works in the future. Our purpose is practical, directed to immediate and wide publicity of a very worthy hypothesis for the solution of a very grave problem, how to secure better rural education in this democracy. Book The Rural School Its Methods and Management Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rural School Its Methods and Management Classic Reprint written by Horace M. Culter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management The present treatise on school methods and management is intended for teachers in the elementary country schools and for those in normal and high schools who expect to go into the rural schools to teach. The writer has studiously avoided all suggestions especially applicable to the management of city schools, and has purposely confined himself to such plans and methods as will be suited to the country school. While consolidation is an important movement, and many more weak districts should be united, yet in many parts of the United States the time is far distant when the one-room country school will, or should, be discontinued. A one-room school in the rural districts, taught by a competent teacher, is still a good place for a boy or girl to get the elements of an education. The United States Commissioner of Education reports that in the school year 1907-1908 there were five and one half million school children and one hundred thirty-four thousand teachers in cities of four thousand or more population; in the outside districts, there were eleven million children and three hundred sixty-one thousand teachers. In the state of Kansas there are two and one third times as many children in the one- and two-room schools and nearly five times as many teachers, as there are in the cities and towns maintaining graded systems of schools. Book Rural School Survey of New York State

Download or read book Rural School Survey of New York State written by Emery N. Ferriss and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School Survey of New York State: The Rural High School Bulletin No. 19 for 1920, of the U. S. Bureau of Education, indicates that there were 13,951 public high schools in the United States in the academic year 1917-18. Slightly more than half of these schools had each an enrolment of fifty pupils or less and seventy-five percent enrolled each one hundred pupils or less. These figures serve as an index of the importance of the small high school in the program of secondary education in this country. These small schools are in the main located in small villages or in the open country, and this study of the rural high schools of New York State should reveal problems that are of general interest because of the frequency with which they are likely to be met. Dr. Ferriss' consideration of these questions should prove helpful to those who are concerned with the administrative and the instructional work of small high schools throughout the country. In the organization of the survey the administrative phases of this study were placed under the general direction of Dr. C. H. Judd, while Dr. W. C. Bagley had a similar relation to the problems of instruction and teacher preparation. This study was made and the results published with money furnished by the Commonwealth Fund. Book Rural Education and the Consolidated School Classic Reprint

Download or read book Rural Education and the Consolidated School Classic Reprint written by Julius Bernhard Arp and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural Education and the Consolidated School Much has been written of late concerning the Rural School Problem. All students of country life seem to agree that a radical readjustment of the entire rural educational and social system, to fit modern conditions, is imperative; but while a few of the leaders have hewn close to the vital spot, none so far have gone straight to the heart of the subject. The author is convinced that the time has come when we must insist upon a full program of reconstruction from the ground up, and begin to build at once. The gist of the problem is to establish a new school in which the essentials of a modern education can be taught. The old school, as still found in over ninety per cent of the rural districts, does not lend itself to such a program; and no amount of repair, addition, varnish, or veneer will transform it into an efficient, modern institution. Rebuilding is absolutely essential. Some friends of the rural school advocate comprehensive changes in the curriculum and justly demand that the training of country boys and girls shall culminate in a complete industrial and vocational education, adapted to twentieth-century life. They are agreed that rural teachers must measure up professionally and otherwise to their colleagues in our best school systems; they recognize that salaries paid must be adequate to insure high-class training and instruction; and yet - they fail to see that these things are impossible in an obsolete school system in which the first elements of success are wanting. The one-room school must go. It cannot provide the education to which country boys and girls are entitled and which the welfare of the country demands.
