Book The Dominicans of Racine Wisconsin

Download or read book The Dominicans of Racine Wisconsin written by O. P. Dolores Enderle and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian Church has taken Jesus and converted him from a man to a mythical Christ. The result has been ignorance and intolerance. The real message of Jesus was human-centered; one of compassion, love, humility and tolerance. Incredibly, anyone who supports these ideals today remains on the fringe of the Christian faith. We can choose to follow the advice of Jesus and his early followers; to find fulfillment by striving to make this world, our lives and the lives of others, what we want them to be. We need to liberate Jesus, and therefore ourselves, so that we can assume more responsibility for each other. No matter how we eventually choose to frame it, it all begins with a human connection.

Book Come Follow Me and Foresake Temptation

Download or read book Come Follow Me and Foresake Temptation written by Tom A. O'Donoghue and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2004 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is on the situation prevailing in the United States, England and Wales, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand from 1922 to 1965, whereby Catholic schools were used to maximise the possibility of recruiting new members to the religious oders and to minimise the temptation to leave the religious life amongst those who had already joined. Four major practices are examined in this regard. First, Catholic schools deliberately set out to encourage pupils to join the ranks of the religious. Secondly, they replicated within the schools the authoritarianism of the religious life. Thirdly, they worked continuously to marginalize lay teachers from their decision-making. Finally, they were ever vigilant in their opposition to co-education and sex education. The contribution of the religious orders to Catholic education is recognized, but consideration is also given to child abuse, both physical and sexual, in whhich members of various religious teaching orders engaged. The book closes with some consideration of current practices in Catholic education. -- book cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A well-illustrated cultural history of the apparel worn by American Catholics, Sally Dwyer-McNulty's Common Threads reveals the transnational origins and homegrown significance of clothing in developing identity, unity, and a sense of respectability for a major religious group that had long struggled for its footing in a Protestant-dominated society often openly hostile to Catholics. Focusing on those who wore the most visually distinct clothes--priests, women religious, and schoolchildren--the story begins in the 1830s, when most American priests were foreign born and wore a variety of clerical styles. Dwyer-McNulty tracks and analyzes changes in Catholic clothing all the way through the twentieth century and into the present, which finds the new Pope Francis choosing to wear plain black shoes rather than ornate red ones. Drawing on insights from the study of material culture and of lived religion, Dwyer-McNulty demonstrates how the visual lexicon of clothing in Catholicism can indicate gender ideology, age, and class. Indeed, clothing itself has become a kind of Catholic language, whether expressing shared devotional experiences or entwined with debates about education, authority, and the place of religion in American society.

Book The Highest Poverty

  • Author : Giorgio Agamben
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press

Download or read book The Highest Poverty written by Giorgio Agamben and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acclaimed philosopher and author of Homo Sacer contemplates the possibility of true human freedom through a deep analysis of monastic stricture. What is a rule, if it appears to become confused with life? And what is a human life, if, in every one of its gestures, of its words, and of its silences, it cannot be distinguished from the rule? It is to these questions that Giorgio Agamben’s new book turns by means of an impassioned reading of the phenomenon of Western monasticism from Pachomius to St. Francis. The Highest Poverty meticulously reconstructs the lives of monks, with their obsessive attention to temporal articulation and to the Rule, to ascetic techniques and to liturgy. But Agamben’s thesis is that the true novelty of monasticism lies not in the confusion between life and norm, but in the discovery of a new dimension, in which “life” is affirmed in its autonomy, and in which the claim of the “highest poverty” and “use” challenges the law in ways that we must still grapple with today. How can we think a form-of-life, that is, a human life released from the grip of law, and a use of bodies and of the world that never becomes an appropriation? How can we think life as something not subject to ownership but only for common use?
