Book excerpt: When Finn is orphaned by Johan Kopf, the infamous Totenkopf and Hessian mercenary, he soon finds himself in the frontier wilds that range from Pennsylvania to Nova Scotia in the late 1750s. There, he is caught up in a bloody conflict that is raging between Great Britain and France, and he joins the first special operations unit in history, the notorious Rogers Rangers in Fort Edward, New York. Under the command of Major Robert Rogers, Finn is set on countless daring raids and covert missions against the French. Throughout numerous conflicts, battles, and skirmishes, Finn not only struggles for survival with his family of battle brothers, but also his own loneliness that has resulted from losing the love of his life, Rosie. He finds out that the whole borderland is in turmoil as growing numbers of settlers, transportees and profiteers arrive, increasing pressure on the mighty Iroquois nation. Fortunately, Finn has help from his band of underdog friends, Olaudah “Gus” Equiano, a freed slave; Marcus Fronto, an eccentric wanderer turned Finn's mentor; and Daniel Nimham, a fierce Wappinger warrior; and beautiful, but perplexing Catherina Brett. Ultimately, however, Finn realizes that if he is to survive this war and keep his sanity intact, he is going to have to learn to grow both on and off the field in a world gone mad. And that’s a journey that only he can make.

Book Topographic Laser Ranging and Scanning

Download or read book Topographic Laser Ranging and Scanning written by Jie Shan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topographic Laser Ranging and Scanning, Second Edition, provides a comprehensive discussion of topographic LiDAR principles, systems, data acquisition, and data processing techniques. This edition presents an introduction and summary of various LiDAR systems and their principles and addresses the operational principles of the different components and ranging methods of LiDAR systems. It discusses the subsequent geometric processing of LiDAR data, with particular attention to quality, accuracy, and meeting standards and addresses the theories and practices of information extraction from LiDAR data, including terrain surface generation, forest inventory, orthoimage generation, building reconstruction, and road extraction. Written by leaders in the field, this comprehensive compilation is a must-have reference book for senior undergraduate and graduate students majoring or working in diverse disciplines, such as geomatics, geodesy, natural resources, urban planning, computer vision, and computer graphics. It is also vital resource for researchers who are interested in developing new methods and need in-depth knowledge of laser scanning and data processing and other professionals may gain the same from the broad topics addressed in this book. New in the Second Edition: A comprehensive array of new laser ranging and scanning technologies. Developments in LiDAR data format and processing techniques. Regrouping of surface modeling, representations and reconstruction. Enhanced discussions on the principles and fundamentals beyond small-footprint pulsed laser systems and new application examples. Many new examples and illustrations.

Book Handbook Of Clinical And Experimental Neuropsychology

Download or read book Handbook Of Clinical And Experimental Neuropsychology written by Gianfranco Denes and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2020-03-06 with total page 1121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The domain of neuroscience has had one of the most explosive growths in recent decades: within this development there has been a remarkable and renewed interest in the study of the relations between behaviour and the central nervous system. Part of this new attention is connected with the contribution of new technologies (PET, fMRI) permitting more precise mapping of neural structures responsible for cognitive functions and the development of new theoretical models of mental activities. The diffusion of new pathologies (for example the pattern of cognitive impairment associated with AIDS) has further enlarged the field of clinical neuropsychology. Finally there has been an expanding clinical interest in the understanding and management of age-related cognitive changes. This volume is the translated and updated version of the second edition of Manuale di Neuropsicologia (Zanichelli, 1996), by the same authors, and it reflects the current status of the art. It is intended to blend clinical and theoretical aspects of neuropsychology. The first part discusses the instrumental and clinical methods of investigation in neuropsychology, together with their development. A long section is dedicated to the language and memory disorders. The impairment of non-verbal cognitve functions, such as the disorders of space orientation, of of visuo-perceptive abilities, and of the emotions and attention, are extensively discussed. The pattern of degenerative dementias is thorougly described, as e is thoroughly described, as well as a number of new topics, such as a neuropsychological approach to consciousness. Finally, perspectives for treatment of some cognitive disorders are outlined.

Book Trade Commerce and the State in the Roman World

Download or read book Trade Commerce and the State in the Roman World written by Andrew Wilson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents eighteen papers by leading Roman historians and archaeologists discussing trade in the Roman Empire during the period c.100 BC to AD 350. It focuses especially on the role of the Roman state in shaping the institutional framework for trade within and outside the empire, in taxing that trade, and in intervening in the markets to ensure the supply of particular commodities, especially for the city of Rome and for the army. As part of a novel interdisciplinary approach to the subject, the chapters address its myriad facets on the basis of broadly different sources of evidence: historical, papyrological, and archaeological. They are grouped into three sections, covering institutional factors (taxation, legal structures, market regulation, financial institutions); evidence for long-distance trade within the empire in wood, stone, glass, and pottery; and trade beyond the frontiers, with the east (as far as China), India, Arabia, the Red Sea, and the Sahara. Rome's external trade with realms to the east emerges as being of particular significance, but it is in the eastern part of the empire itself where the state appears to have adapted the mechanisms of taxation in collaboration with the elite holders of wealth to support its need for revenue. On the other hand, the price of that collaboration, which was in effect a fiscal partnership, ultimately led in the longer term in slightly different forms in the east and the west to a fundamental change in the political character of the empire.
