Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rule of Faith, as Maintained by the Fathers and the Church of England: A Sermon, Preached Before the University, in the Cathedral Church of Christ, in Oxford, on the Fifth Sunday After Epiphany This Sermon has been delayed in the hope of finding leisure to put together more fully some chief passages of the Fathers upon some of the subjects touched upon. It is now published at the earnest desire of some, with the purpose of completing the Appendix, with Gods help, as soon as it can be done. After it had been preached before the University, a time of trouble came at St. Saviour's, Leeds, in which the writer hoped that it might be a comfort to some, to preach the substance of it, in a somewhat more popular form. Amid the sorrows there, it was (it may just be said) an exceeding comfort to see the power which the Church of England really had over the hearts of her people, "a power of God unto salvation," through the grace of God the Holy Ghost.
