Book Delineations Graphical and Descriptive of Fountains Abbey in the West Riding of the County of York Classic Reprint

Download or read book Delineations Graphical and Descriptive of Fountains Abbey in the West Riding of the County of York Classic Reprint written by James Storer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Delineations, Graphical and Descriptive, of Fountains' Abbey, in the West Riding of the County of York The vestiges of fountains' abbey are universally allowed to be the most perfect and picturesque that now exist in the kingdom; and every attention which art can bestow is exerted to enhance the natural beauties of the place; so that, while the fabric itself exhibits the mouldering ruins of a once magnificent pile, erected in a far distant age, the grounds are decorated and preserved in all the elegance of modern refine ment. These delightful associations of nature and of art have long been duly appreciated; and the continual resort of nobility and fashion to these charming scenes gives ample testimony to the estimation in which they are held. Not withstanding these superior claims, it may be asserted correctly that no adequate representation of this splendid ruin, nor any particular description has hitherto been attempted. Book The Ruined Abbeys of Britain Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ruined Abbeys of Britain Classic Reprint written by Frederick Ross and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-25 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ruined Abbeys of Britain The object of the present publication is to supply a want - that of a pictorial history of the chief ruined abbeys of Britain. There are many valuable histories of individual or local groupings of abbeys; many detailed accounts in country histories; and numberless guide books, more or less complete, but generally very meagre in detail. There are also a few works of a more comprehensive character, which profess to give accounts of all the principal ruins, but these are mainly mere epitomes, and often without views or plans. There appeared, therefore, to be an opening for a general history, giving a full historical and descriptive account of the ruins, with ample illustrations, which should be at once a book for the library and for the drawing-room table, - a book for the student and for the superficial reader. Such a work is contemplated in these pages; the materials are gathered from the most authentic sources, and have been arranged in consecutive order, with a view of avoiding, on the one hand the dry matter-of - fact style of the antiquary, on the other the verbose style which ignores facts and details, and indulges rather in poetical imaginings than in accuracy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fountains Abbey: The Story of a Mediœval Monastery The materials out of which this book is made were taken mainly from two sources: a description and explanation of the Abbey ruins by Mr. W. H. St. John Hope, and a collection and annotation of the Abbey records by Mr. John Richard Walbran. The ruins have been minutely examined by Mr. St. John Hope, who has left no stone unconsidered. He has brought to his study of the Abbey a profound knowledge of monastic architecture. The account of his investigations is published in the fifteenth volume of the "Yorkshire Archæological Journal," to which is appended a historical ground-plan of the Abbey, drawn by Mr. Harold Brakspear. The Marquess of Ripon has had copies of this plan framed and placed in various parts of the buildings for the information of visitors. Through the courtesy of Mr. Hope and Mr. Brakspear I am enabled to give a reduced version of this excellent plan. The records have been gathered together by Mr. Walbran, and printed, with many learned and interesting notes, in two volumes of the publications of the Surtees Society, entitled "Memorials of Fountains Abbey."
