Book A Social History of English Rugby Union

Download or read book A Social History of English Rugby Union written by Tony Collins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-13 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the myth of William Webb Ellis to the glory of the 2003 World Cup win, this book explores the social history of rugby union in England. Ever since Tom Brown’s Schooldays the sport has seen itself as the guardian of traditional English middle-class values. In this fascinating new history, leading rugby historian Tony Collins demonstrates how these values have shaped the English game, from the public schools to mass spectator sport, from strict amateurism to global professionalism. Based on unprecedented access to the official archives of the Rugby Football Union, and drawing on an impressive array of sources from club minutes to personal memoirs and contemporary literature, the book explores in vivid detail the key events, personalities and players that have made English rugby. From an era of rapid growth at the end of the nineteenth century, through the terrible losses suffered during the First World War and the subsequent ‘rush to rugby’ in the public and grammar schools, and into the periods of disorientation and commercialisation in the 1960s through to the present day, the story of English rugby union is also the story of the making of modern England. Like all the very best writers on sport, Tony Collins uses sport as a prism through which to better understand both culture and society. A ground-breaking work of both social history and sport history, A Social History of English Rugby Union tells a fascinating story of sporting endeavour, masculine identity, imperial ideology, social consciousness and the nature of Englishness.

Book England Rugby

Download or read book England Rugby written by Jason Woolgar and published by Virgin Books Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a dream come true for every England rugby fan when the whistle blew in Sydney to signal the end of the Rugby World Cup Final in 2003. A long campaign, which began almost directly after the previous World Cup in 1999, had culminated in one of the most tightly fought contests and it provided the most dramatic of finales. But while England relish that achievement, one should not forget that there have been many memorable matches down the years since 1871 when an England rugby union team first took to the field. Some have even passed into sporting folklore, such as the legendary 13-0 victory over New Zealand in 1936, which was characterised by Prince Alexander Obolensky's marvellous brace of tries, or the breathtaking roller-coaster ride of the 26-26 draw with the All Blacks in 1977. England: The Official RFU History takes readers right back to the very origins of the game, from the time that William Webb Ellis caught the ball and ran with it at Rugby School, and leads them through a history that is rich with great sporting moments and memorable characters. It follows the highs and lows of successive teams as they have suffered defeats and near misses and battled their way to successes in the Five and Six Nations tournaments. Gloriously illustrated with many exclusive archival photographs and memorabilia from the RFU's Museum at Twickenham, this fascinating book also includes an A-Z of some of the greatest players ever to have pulled on the white shirt of England as well as full statistics for evey game that England has played right up to the end of the Six Nations contest of 2004. Whether you are a fan of long standing, or one who has been attracted by the passion of recent times, England: The Official RFU History is a must-have addition to any true England rugby fan's bookshelf.

Book The Secret Life of Twickenham

Download or read book The Secret Life of Twickenham written by Chris Jones and published by Aurum. This book was released on 2014-09-04 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twickenham Stadium is rightly venerated as the home of the Rugby Football Union (RFU). While it may bask in this fame, the stadium’s beginnings were very humble. The land it was built upon was purchased in 1907 and would subsequently become the home to the Harlequins who would play the first ever match against Richmond. The first England test match didn’t take place until 1910 and a home win ensured things got off on the right footing but cows, sheep and horses would be grazing on the pitch just four years later as the stadium became a farm during the First World War. The first Varsity match was played in December 1921, by which time the popularity of Twickenham had soared. Extra accommodation was created in the North Stand, built in 1925 by the legendary football stadium architect, Archibald Leitch. By 1931, the famous ‘Twickenham Look’ had come about. When the Second World War arrived, the ground became a Civil Defence depot, and the closest it got to being hit by enemy action was in July 1944 when a V1 flying bomb fell in the front garden of a house opposite the West Gate, injuring sixteen people. The car park was dug up and – appropriately given its original use – turned into allotments to generate much needed fresh food for the locals. The stadium today is at the heart of a multi-million pound business that the RFU controls, but how does it generate so much money from this one plot of land? With such a colourful and celebrated history The Secret Life of Twickenham will dig deeper into it’s history to reveal the many men and women, cutting across all social backgrounds, jobs, and positions within the RFU who have helped to build this iconic stadium into a globally recognised brand. It will reveal to all fans of rugby union the true history of the most iconic sports stadium in the British Isles with a compendium of facts, dates, figures and revealing anecdotes of England’s sporting fortress.
