Book The 1996 Russian Presidential Election

Download or read book The 1996 Russian Presidential Election written by Jerry F. Hough and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1996 Russian presidential election is a crucial referendum on the policy of economic reform that had been conducted over the previous five years. This book, written before the election on the basis of two major public opinion surveys at the time of the 1993 and 1995 Duma elections, explores the evolution in Russian thinking, the positions and strategies of the candidates, and the dilemma of the centrists choosing between a president they profoundly dislike and a Communist party they do not trust. In the 1990s, the northern regions of Russia supported free-trade reform and the southern regions protectionism, but this reversed the more normal pattern found in Russian politics a century ago. As the book looks at the psychological and sociological factors that produced the politics of the early 1990s and began to transform it in a more "normal" direction in the mid-1990s, it goes beyond a simple analysis to discuss the more enduring problems of economic and political reform in Russia. Book Party Politics in Post communist Russia

Download or read book Party Politics in Post communist Russia written by John Lowenhardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political parties are the fabric of democratic politics. In 1991 a new Russia emerged after seven decades of one-party dictatorship, claiming to be on the road towards democracy. In this volume the authors analyse the many contradictions, dilemmas, and paradoxes of reconstituting free party politics and democratic rule in a severely traumatized country. Frequently from a comparative perspective they deal with a range of topics, from the behaviour of the new parties in parliament, the role of ideology in cementing party organizations, to the character and prospects of the transient Russian party system.

Book Constitutional Reforms and International Law in Central and Eastern Europe

Download or read book Constitutional Reforms and International Law in Central and Eastern Europe written by Rejn Avovič Müllerson and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent developments in central and eastern Europe have changed the political landscape of the world. The dissolution of the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, the collapse of Communism in Europe, market reforms, and the processes of democratisation are all seminal events affecting not only the countries in transition but other states as well. All these changes presuppose fundamental legal reforms. In this process most of the countries in transition have adopted new constitutions where issues of participation in the international political order and questions of international law enjoy a prominent place. This book is one outcome of many research activities concerning these transitions in central and eastern Europe at the Centre of European Law, King's College London. It contains essays about constitutional reforms and international law by leading international judges and academics. It is edited by Mads Andenas, Director of the Centre of European Law at King's College London, Malgosia Fitzmaurice, Reader in International Law at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London, and Rein Müllerson, Professor in International Law at King's College.
