In 1939, the BEF was deployed to counter the German aggression in Europe. The men of 2nd Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment, were some of the first to land in France. Less than a year later, they would be massacred by the Waffen-SS in one of the most egregious war crimes of the Second World War. After deploying to the Maginot Line sector in January of 1940, the Norfolks experienced some of the war’s most monumental firsts—including the first decorations to be awarded, and the first British officer killed in action. But more tragedy was to come when the Germans launched their May offensive. As the Allies withdrew towards the English Channel, the Norfolks were ordered to defend a section of the Canal Line. After several days, they were surrounded and forced to surrender. The next morning, ninety-nine men of the Battalion were marched to a paddock and machine-gunned in cold blood by their SS captors. Miraculously, two men survived and helped bring the SS officer responsible, Fritz Knoechlien, to justice after the war.

But while much attention has been given in the literature to the other three elements, Communications in the British Army during World War II have been widely ignored. This book rectifies the omission. It shows that failures in front line communications contributed to several of the set backs suffered by the Army but also that ultimate victory was only achieved after a successful communications system was in place. It explains how the outcome of the main campaigns in Europe and North Africa depended on communications, how the system operated and how it evolved from a relatively primitive and inadequately supplied state at Dunkirk to a generally effective system at the time of the Rhine crossings. Problems still occurred however, for example at infantry platoon level and famously with paratrooper communications at Arnhem, often simply due to the shortcomings of existing technology. The book concludes that it is only very recently that advances in technology have allowed those problems to be solved.

Young and old, these were men keen to fight for King and Country in the Great War. Many of them were never to return home. Sent into battle against the Turks at Gallipoli, the whole battalion simply disappeared. Despite extensive enquiries by King George V and Queen Alexandra, no trace of the men was ever discovered. Some reports mentioned a cloud coming down on dense woodland and spiriting them away, others that the men were caught in crossfire while fighting their way through a burning wood. Even after the discovery of a sinister mass grave by a mysterious priest the fate of the men remained a secret. It is only now that Nigel McCrery, who gained privileged access to the Royal Archives at Windsor Castle and travelled out to the scene of the battle, can reveal what befell this gallant band of gentlemen.
