Book The Royal Nepal Army

Download or read book The Royal Nepal Army written by Ashok K. Mehta and published by books catalog. This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little is known about Nepal except for its beautiful mountains. Still less is known about its people, their poverty and underdevelopment and its fallout – the Maoist uprising. Even less has been heard about the Royal Nepal Army – RNA, till the Maoists pulled it out from its barracks. Reluctantly, RNA transformed from a ceremonial, mainly UN peacekeeping Force into a field army, struggling to find the will and wherewithal to meet the challenge posted by the Maoists. The RNA is the creation of the feudal Rana and Shah rulers to whom it swears allegiance. After the February 1,2005, Royal coup, the King has placed center stage, the RNA, the symbol of his moral, political, and divine powers, all rolled into one. The Maoist war is about rolling back the feudal order, establishing a multiparty democratic republic with a reformed RNA under civilian control. The challenge for the RNA is in containing, regaining eighty percent of land under Maoist control and winning back the people swayed by the Maoist cause. With democratic institutions snuffed out, this is a tall order. The Maoists are unlikely to take Katmandu because their power to intimidate and terrorize is far greater than their finite military capacity. In the ongoing war, a stalemate has not been reached. This book tells you not only the story of the Maoist uprising, but also for the first time, why the RNA was not used sooner to counter the Maoists.

Book Blood Against the Snows

Download or read book Blood Against the Snows written by Jonathan Gregson and published by 4th Estate, Limited. This book was released on 2002 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A portrait of Nepal's doom-laden royal dynasty from its staggering expansion in the 18th century to the massacre in June 2001. Nepal has a history inextricably mixed with kingship. There have been kings in its mountain valleys for millennia. Buddha Siddharta was born a Nepalese prince and the current dynasty traces its ancestry to the Rajput princes from Rajasthan. Nepal is the last Hindu kingdom in the world, in which the same traditions of kingship are practised now as in Vedic times. Kings are gods, and history, kingship and myth are culturally woven together. The current Shah dynasty created modern Nepal and was the complete focus of national identity. It was, then, a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions when the heir to the throne, frustrated by his mother in his desire to marry a girl from a rival clan, slaughtered as many of the royal family as he could find in the palace. In a few bloody minutes Crown Prince Diprendra committed matricide, patricide, fratricide and suicide and ensured for himself a place in history's pantheon of deranged monarchs.

Book The Bullet and the Ballot Box

Download or read book The Bullet and the Ballot Box written by Aditya Adhikari and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bullet and the Ballot Box offers a rich and sweeping account of a decade of revolutionary upheaval. When Nepal’s Maoists launched their armed rebellion in the nineties, they had limited public support and many argued that their ideology was obsolete. Twelve years later they were in power, and their ambitious plan of social transformation dominated the national agenda. How did this become possible? Adhikari’s narrative draws on a broad range of sources – including novels, letters and diaries – to illuminate the history and human drama of the Maoist revolution. An indispensible account of Nepal’s recent history, the book offers a fascinating case study of how communist ideology has been reinterpreted and translated into political action in the twenty-first century.

Book Military and Democracy in Nepal

Download or read book Military and Democracy in Nepal written by Indra Adhikari and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the development of the military as an organization and looks at the patterns of civil–military relations that have emerged in modern Nepal, especially after the rise of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, who founded the unified state of Nepal. It combines astute analyses with up-to-date data to present a comprehensive account of the relations between monarchy, military and civil government and their impact on the democratization process in the country. The author underlines the pressing need for establishing civilian supremacy over the military, through developing and strengthening civilian supervisory mechanisms. The book will be an important resource to researchers, scholars, students of politics, military studies, peace and conflict studies, and history, particularly those concerned with Nepal. It will also interest policy-makers, security experts and military personnel.
