Book The Royal Canadian Armoured Corps

Download or read book The Royal Canadian Armoured Corps written by John Marteinson and published by Robin Brass Studio. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Canadian Armoured Corps has a proud and distinguished history. While the modern history of the Corps clearly begins with its official formation in the early days of the Second World War, its roots in the Canadian militia cavalry go back more than 180 years. Many histories have recorded the heritage of individual units, but most are no longer available and they focus on the deeds of their own members. The broader history of the mobile arm of the Canadian Army and of its actions as a whole has never been told. This handsome, profusely illustrated book, a Millennium project, is published to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. The opening chapter deals with the service of the cavalry ancestors of the Armoured Corps in the War of 1812, the Rebellions of 1837-38 and the North-West Rebellion. The First World War and the interwar period saw the advent of the tank and other new forms of armour, and the organization developed and expanded enormously to meet the demands of the Second World War. The major part of the book deals with the service of the Corps in the Second World War as Canadian armoured units played important roles in the Allied invasion of Europe and the defeat of the Third Reich. Since the war, the Armoured Corps has been involved in most of Canada's military commitments, in Korea, in Europe with NATO, and in peacekeeping operations in many parts of the world. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Right[s] some of the injustices done to the Canadians” on their maligned actions during the Invasion of Normandy. “An absorbing account” (Firetrench). The Canadian Fourth Armoured Division crossed the Channel in July 1944 to support the invading forces and assist in the Allied attempts to break out of the Normandy beachhead. They were heavily engaged in Operation Totalize and Operation Tractable but have been criticized for their failure to close the ‘Falaise gap’ and complete the entrapment of withdrawing German forces. Their commander, Major General George Kitching, was relieved of his command after just twenty-one days in action. Angelo Caravaggio reexamines the division’s performance and particularly that of its leadership. Using new information, he establishes that, despite entering battle for the first time during one of the most challenging phases of Allied operations in August 1944, the 4th Armoured Division, under Kitching’s leadership, proved resilient and adaptive in overcoming the volatile and unpredictable nature of warfare in Normandy. The combat operations of August 1944 transformed the division into a battle-hardened combat formation that would later distinguish itself through its ability to generate a sustained drive across France out of the chaos and destruction of the Normandy battles. “The author uses new information to demonstrate the unit did show flexibility and adapted to the battlefield quickly, despite being thrown into battle during one of the Normandy Campaign’s critical phases. His arguments are detailed and based upon in-depth research, and the book has many detailed maps to help the reader follow the action.” —Warfare History Network

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An army may march on its stomach, but it needs more than hot dinners to fight. As Canadians battled through Northwest Europe in the Second World War, how did they reinforce their front lines? An Army of Never-Ending Strength provides detailed insight into the administration, structure, and troop and equipment levels of the First Canadian Army during 1944–45. Captain Arthur W. Gullachsen demonstrates the army’s effectiveness at reinforcing its combat units and draws a powerful conclusion. The administrative and logistical capability of the Canadian Army created a constant state of offensive strength, which made a marked contribution to eventual Allied victory.
