Download or read book The Roman Frontier in Britain written by David Colin Arthur Shotter and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date and in-depth historical study of the northern Roman frontier in Britain - why was the military conquest of Scotland never completed and what were the criteria governing Roman policy over the centuries? The idea of the Roman frontier immediately conjures up pictures of Hadrian's Wall with its forts and other remains, and of the Antonine Wall in Scotland. These two structures, however, represent two elements in a story which took a great deal longer to evolve and which, if taken in isolation, tend to mask a clear appraisal of the way in which the frontier in Britain actually developed. What, after all, did the Romans want to achieve in Britain? Why did they not capitalise on Agricola's victory at Mons Graupius in AD83 to subdue the entire country once and for all? How did the idea for a physical barrier evolve? And why, after all the effort of building Hadrian's Wall, did the emperor Antoninus Pius embark upon fresh conquest in Scotland? This book is intended primarily as an historical treatment of the Roman military occupation in Britain up until the early third century AD, although it does also describe the later history of the frontier zone.It draws upon archaeological evidence, but is not intended as a guide to the remains of Hadrian's and Antonine's Walls. Rather, it aims to set these spectacular fortifications into the broader context of Roman military plans.
Download or read book The Religious Reuse of Roman Structures in Early Medieval England written by Tyler Bell and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2005 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines how and why Roman structures - commonly villas, forts, and bathhouses - were reinvented as religious centres in the Post-Roman period. Two principal lines of enquiry are pursued: the relationship of post-Roman burials with Roman buildings, and the relationship between early churches and Roman buildings. The aims of this research were to establish a unified corpus around which the study of these type-sites may be pursued; to present a balanced, judicious, and informed consideration of the problem of continuity, and to critically assess various models for the progress from secular structures to sacred sites; and to demonstrate that the physical remains of Roman structures had a significant impact on the religious landscape of Early Medieval England sites.

Download or read book Theoretical Aspects of Roman Camp and Fort Design written by Alan Richardson and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2004 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising a rectangular enclosure bounded by a rampart and ditch, the Roman camp displayed the skills of the Roman military engineers in assessing and deploying human and other resources. This study of Roman camps, forts, fortlets and legionary fortresses examines the logistics and ergonomics of their construction, from surveying the landscape and siting the camp, to calculating its dimensions and the manpower required. Information from ancient sources, such as Polybius, Josephus and Hyginus, is used for some of the calculations and examples from Britain, including the forts along Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall, are cited. The quantity of numbers and tables in this volume should not put you off; it is an accessible and interesting study of how Roman Republican and imperial armies fortified their enclaves in the field.
Download or read book Coal in Roman Britain written by John Robert Travis and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 2008 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal has often been considered unimportant to the economy of Roman Britain, and not something that was deliberately mined. This study, based on growing archaeological evidence aims to overturn this view. Travis centres his research on Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire, tracing coal from these coalfields further afield, and finding that, in the case of Yorkshire and Derbyshire it was transported much further than has often been assumed. Lancashire presents a different case, and Travis posits that the coal was used primarily locally in industry controlled by the military.
