All tho M.E. versions of the Romance of Guy of Warwick are translations from the French. Unfortunately the French original has not yet been entirely edited. It occurs perhaps in more MSS. than I have become aware of. I know of the existence of eight, three of which are in London (Reg. MS. 8 F ix, Harley MS. 3775, and one in the College of Arms), the rest at Oxford (Rawlinson MS. Misc. 137), at Cambridge (Corpus Christi College, L), at Cheltenham, at WolfenbUttel (Cod. Aug. 87, 4), and in Paris (1669). Mr G. A. Herbing has edited the beginning of the work from the Wolfenhiittel if S. in the Programm der grossen Stadtschtde zu Wismar al$ Einladung zur MicJiaelisprli/ung 1872, for a copy of which I am. indebted to the editor's kindness. Prof. Stengel of Marburg was good enough to lend me a copy of the Rawlinson Fragment, made by Mr Parker, and collated with, and, in part, supplied from, the Reg. MS. by himself. The Ilarley and the Cambridge itSS. have been for many passages consulted by myself. In the notes, unless a particular MS. or Mr Hcrbing's publication be mentioned, always the Cambridge MS. is meant. § 2. Tho French Romance was done into English several times.
