Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic: A Tale of Contemporary Society The members of the Catholic aristocracy formed the nucleus of the congregation of St. Peter's, and upon the Sundays in the London season the church was crowded with fashionable people, many of whom were not Catholics. These were attracted by the beautiful building, the solemn services, the gorgeous music and ceremonial, and the preaching of Monsignor Vance lour; in their own words, they visited the church to see Romanism at its best. On the other hand, St. Peter's was not popular with God's poor, namely, the Irish, who declared that it was little better than a Protest temple! This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Primitive Church and the Primacy of Rome His book demands an introduction, which, I am afraid, will have to be mainly occupied with myself. Until eighteen months ago I was a member of the Society of Jesus; now I am no more so. I was not expelled from that Society. I left it of my own accord, because the religious opinions and doctrines I held did not any longer agree with the opinions and doctrines held sacred by that Society. As long as I remained in the Society of Jesus my Superiors never complained of me for reasons other than those connected with differences in doctrine. On this point I can appeal to all the Jesuits who have known me. I served the Society of Jesus for twenty-seven years with the utmost fidelity. Book The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools Classic Reprint written by Edwin D. Mead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church and the Public Schools This manual is published by the directors of the Old South Studies in History and Politics, for the use of schools, clubs, classes, and individual students. The societies of young men and women that are now being organized everywhere in America for historical and political study can do nothing better to begin with than to make themselves thoroughly familiar with the Constitution and its history. It is with the needs of such societies in mind that the table of topics for study and the very full bibliographical notes in this manual have been prepared. These outlines for the study of the history, literature, art and general life of Holland are prepared with a view to a course occupying fourteen sessions of any society or club making use of them. Although, in the order of subjects, there is a general reference to chronology, this is not so strict as to prevent the grouping together of related subjects in the most systematic, suggestive and dramatic manner possible. The bibliographical section is full, but it is hoped not so full as to be confusing to any. The writer has endeavored always to make it plain what books are the best for those whose opportunities for reading and study are limited. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life Inside the Church of Rome Rome need not boast of the good works which have been done in her Church, because they have been accomplished, for the most part, not because of the help of the Church, but in spite of its opposition. Would to God that the eyes of all mankind could be Opened to see Rome as she is! It has the power in many countries to trample on and crush the weak, because it Hatters and bribes the strong to act as its ally in evil, until the strong also become weak and then they, too, learn what are the tender mercies of this professedly Christian Church. But even thus limited the subject is a vast one, far surpassing the possibility of adequate treatment in a work like this. But the object will be achieved if a wider interest be awakened in this period of Church History, and fresh attention be directed to these earlier attempts to work out problems in Church and State which are still unsolved. Book The Relations of the Church to Society

Download or read book The Relations of the Church to Society written by Edmund J. O'reilly and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relations of the Church to Society: Theological Essays The most useful introduction to this volume will, we think, be found in a brief account of the writer's life and character, with some indications of the very high esteem in which, as a man and as a theologian, he was held by Cardinal Newman and other distinguished men. Edmund Joseph O'Reilly was born in London, on the April 30th, 1811, and he was six years old before his parents returned to Ireland. His father died while he was young, leaving him to the care of his pious mother. This lady was one of five sisters, one of whom married the third Lord Kenmare (grandfather to the present earl); another entered the Visitation Convent at Westbury, in England; another married Mr. Bagot, of Castle Bagot, in County Dublin; and the last married Mr. Dease, of Turbotstown, in Queen's County. The father of these ladies and of Mrs. O'Reilly, Mr. Edmund O'Callaghan, of Killegorey, in the County Clare, was mortally wounded in a duel, but survived five days to repent and prepare for his judgment. It is curious to find such a man as Father O'Reilly linked so closely with the bygone age of duelling. Edmund O'Reilly spent several years of his boyhood at Mount Catherine, a few miles from Limerick. His first education he received from a private tutor. After some years at Clongowes and Maynooth, he went to Rome, about 1830, for his ecclesiastical studies, and spent seven years attending the classes of the Roman College, but residing in the Irish College, of which the late Cardinal Cullen was then president. At the end of a long and distinguished course he gained the degree of Doctor of Divinity, after what is termed a "public act" de universa theologia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evidences and Doctrines of the Catholic Church: Showing That the Former Are No Less Convincing Than the Latter Are Propitious to the Happiness of Society To deduce the Evidences of the Catholic Church from the primitive source of Revelation, and illustrate the speculative truth of its doctrines, as well as their prac tical influence on the happiness of society, is the object of this volume. From the highest origin of religious knowledge, the reader is conducted along its varied course, as it descended through the land of Judea, or diverged among the other nations of the earth. As he traces it through the latter countries, he is enabled to mark the diminutions which it sustained by straying amidst the regions of ignorance or philosophy; whilst. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glimpse of the Great Society M The Ultramontanes are wont to assure all those, who are attached to Constitutional Government in this country, and to the cause of law and order elsewhere, that they can have no such firm allies, as the adherents of the Papacy, the devoted sons of the great central authority of the Roman Catholic Church. But in giving these assurances the Ultramontanes either ignore, or are themselves not aware of the fact, that this central autho rity, to which they are blindly obedient, claims more or less the right to supersede, and is therefore sure, in matters, more or less important, to become antagonistic to any authority that is not absolutely its own, or practically obedient to its behests. Nothing is more astonishing to the uninitiated than the rapidity, with which the Ultramontanes transfer their allegiance from one extreme of political opinion to the other.
