Book The Reticuloendothelial System and Immune Phenomena

Download or read book The Reticuloendothelial System and Immune Phenomena written by N. R. Di Luzio and published by Springer. This book was released on 1971-07 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential importance of this system in atherogenesis as well as the accent on the possible and provocative immune nature of the atherogenic process are stressed. The newer techniques which are presented will permit the investigation of important clinical and experimental aspects which have hitherto escaped investigation and will contribute to the elucidation of the role of the reticuloendothelial system in health and disease. Indeed, the key to the elimination of many diseases of man may well be found within the cells which comprise this system, as more and more of their diverse and versatile activities become known.

Book The Reticuloendothelial System in Health and Disease

Download or read book The Reticuloendothelial System in Health and Disease written by S.M. Reichard and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976-08-01 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals mainly with morphologic, ontogenic and metabolic aspects of phagocytosis and factors affecting RES function. The first section contains chapters on the morphology and surface properties of macrophages. The second section deals with the ontogeny and development of B and T lymphocytes as well as macrophages. The third section covers biochemical and physiologic parameters of mononuclear cells and of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, e.g., cyclic nucleotide and iron metabolism, chemotaxis and enzymatic activity, while the fourth is concerned with the phagocytic event. The fifth section relates to factors affecting RES function with discussions on surface receptors of B lymphocyte activation by antigens in regard to the effect of ligand concentration and induction time, lipopolysaccharide effects in vivo and in vitro as related to RES cells including a correlation of lipopolysaccharide structure with biological activity and, finally, the role of the RES in shock and trauma. Summaries of two workshops are also contained in this volume, the first workshop was concerned with the biochemistry and physiology of the RES; the second dealt with pharmacologically important aspects of RES metabolism and function. It is anticipated that the presentation of symposia and scientific papers and the workshop summaries will reflect the intense activity that is taking place in this multidisciplinary field. A better understanding of the Reticuloendothelial System is directly relevant to both conceptional and practical aspects of not only immunology, but other areas of medical and biological sciences in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Antigens, Lymphoid Cells, and the Immune Response deals with the nature and properties of antigens and with the functional anatomy and cell physiology of the mammalian lymphoid system which responds to antigens. The book discusses the central questions in cellular immunology; the antigens and the afferent limb of the immune response; and antibodies and the afferent limb of the immune response. The text also describes the organ distribution of antigens; the functional anatomy of the lymphoid system; and the behavior patterns of lymphoid cells. The microscopic and electron microscopic distribution of antigen in lymphoid organs; the interaction of antigens with cells of the reticuloendothelial system; and the interaction of antigen with lymphoid cells are also considered. The book further tackles the role of antigen in immunological tolerance; antibody production and tolerance dissociated; and antigen and lymphoid cells.

Download or read book Immunological Tolerance written by David H. Katz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immunological Tolerance: Mechanisms and Potential Therapeutic Applications documents the proceedings of a conference held at Brook Lodge, Michigan, April 27-May 1, 1974. The conference brought together many of the investigators who have actively contributed to furthering knowledge and understanding of immunological tolerance. It will be immediately clear to the reader that the conference was structured in a way to consider phenomena of tolerance and immune suppression as interrelated entities with a certain degree of emphasis on the possible common cellular mechanisms involved. The volume contains 36 contributions presented during the seven sessions of the conference. The papers presented in Session I examined T-cell tolerance. The presentations in Session II focused on B cell tolerance. The papers in Sessions III and IV focused on the mechanisms of B cell and T cell tolerance, respectively. Session V dealt with the activity of suppressor cells as a mechanism of tolerance. The papers in Session VI investigated the suppressive activity of antibody and antigen-antibody complexes. In Session VII a final General Discussion was held in order to identify what has been established concerning the phenomenology and mechanisms of specific immunological tolerance, what are the major unresolved issues, and what approaches appear most promising to answer these questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatise on the reticuloendothelial system is a project jointly shared by individual members of the Reticuloendothelial (RE) Society and bio medical scientists in general who are interested in the intricate system of cells and molecular moieties derived from those cells which constitute the RES. It may now be more fashionable in some quarters to consider these cells as part of what is called the mononuclear phagocytic system or the lymphoreticular system. Nevertheless, because of historical developments and current interest in the subject by investigators from many diverse areas, it seems advantageous to present in one comprehensive treatise current information and knowledge con cerning basic aspects of the RES, such as morphology, biochemistry, phylogeny and ontogeny, physiology, and pharmacology as weIl as clinical areas including immunopathology, cancer, infectious diseases, allergy, and hypersensitivity. It is anticipated that by presenting information concerning these apparently heterogeneous topics under the unifying umbrella of the RES attention will be focused on the similarities as weIl as interactions among the cell types constitut ing the RES from the viewpoint of various disciplines. The treatise editors and their editorial board, consisting predominantly of the editors of individual vol umes, are extremely grateful for the enthusiastic cooperation and enormous task undertaken by members of the biomedical community in general and especially by members of the American as weIl as European and Japanese Reticuloendothe lial Societies.
