Book excerpt: Based on thorough bibliographic research of a highly controversial topic, this report, jointly sponsored by IUCN, UNEP and WWF, shows the potential of plantations, while also exposing problems which may arise if massive tree plantations proposed for the tropics are to be established. Major issues covered include; species selection, soil and water cycle effects, fires, pests and diseases, effects on biodiversity, carbon dioxide fixation, land tenure and social issues, and plantation economics. Some broad conclusions and guidelines to be considered when establishing large scale plantations in the tropics complete this study.

Download or read book Climate Change and Vulnerability of Ecosystem Services written by Sudhanshu Gupta and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unprecedented changes in the world, on account of climate change and growing demands of human population, pose serious challenge in managing the ecosystem related services of the country. The three countries, which are likely to be worst affected on account of increased vulnerability due to reduced ecosystem resilience are Brazil, China and India. This publication springs from an effort to analyze the driving forces, pressures and state of forests in the three countries, with special reference to policies addressing the natural resource management. The described frame work of DPSIR model has been used to compare and analyze the state of forests among the three countries to address the priorities for assessment, planning, management and action. The book would bring insight to managers, resource users and policy makers to review existing procedures and improve responses in the respective countries.

Download or read book The context of natural forest management and FSC certification in Brazil written by Claudia Romero and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2015-12-30 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management decisions on appropriate practices and policies regarding tropical forests often need to be made in spite of innumerable uncertainties and complexities. Among the uncertainties are the lack of formalization of lessons learned regarding the impacts of previous programs and projects. Beyond the challenges of generating the proper information on these impacts, there are other difficulties that relate with how to socialize the information and knowledge gained so that change is transformational and enduring. The main complexities lie in understanding the interactions of social-ecological systems at different scales and how they varied through time in response to policy and other processes. This volume is part of a broad research effort to develop an independent evaluation of certification impacts with stakeholder input, which focuses on FSC certification of natural tropical forests. More specifically, the evaluation program aims at building the evidence base of the empirical biophysical, social, economic, and policy effects that FSC certification of natural forest has had in Brazil as well as in other tropical countries. The contents of this volume highlight the opportunities and constraints that those responsible for managing natural forests for timber production have experienced in their efforts to improve their practices in Brazil. As such, the goal of the studies in this volume is to serve as the foundation to design an impact evaluation framework of the impacts of FSC certification of natural forests in a participatory manner with interested parties, from institutions and organizations, to communities and individuals.
Download or read book Mixed Plantations of Eucalyptus and Leguminous Trees written by Elke Jurandy Bran Nogueira Cardoso and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present, in depth, updated information on soil and microbial processes involved in mixed plantations of Eucalyptus and N2-fixing species, especially Acacia mangium, focusing on Forestry, Soils, Biology, Ecosystem Services and Sustainability. The potential of substituting chemical N fertilizer by a consortium of leguminous species that fix atmospheric nitrogen is an interesting solution for a more sustainable, economically and environmentally sound forest system. Among the main topics, we present reference topics on soil microbiology, as biological nitrogen fixation, the role of mycorrhiza in mixed plantations, bio-indicators of soil quality, and plantgrowth promoting bacteria with biotechnological potential. Here we discuss Ecosystem services and ecological benefits of these systems, the invasive potential of A.mangium, as well as the regulations and perspectives of land use policies for mixed forests and their role in the sustainability of the system.
