In addition, I will focus on business context. Business context in this paper means the realm of big companies with at least branches in two different cultures. Therefore, I have chosen five countries that Germany has a strong business interest in, and which have different socio-cultural frameworks: Saudi-Arabia, China, Japan, Russia, and Brazil. The proceeding in this paper is that after explanatory notes to functions and types of NVC, I will show a photo of one notable business representative of each of the five countries. Based on these photos, I will illustrate the characteristic features of NVC in the respective country. Differences to German NVC will be lined out with special hints to potential pitfalls, causing severe economic consequences. Finally, I will summarize the main issues of this paper, consider the results and come up with a conclusion. The sources used for this paper are not only scientifically proven literature. For the definition of NVC in general, long-established surveys of prominent academics are available, like I. Eibl-Eibesfeldt (Similarities and Differences between Cultures in Expressive Movements), and M. Argyle (Non-verbal Communication in Human Social Interaction). To be responsive to the business related task of this paper, I also draw on “how-to books”, internet posts and a quality journal.

In addition to language and culture differences, one aspect of intercultural communication that is often overlooked and yet vitally important is the role of nonverbal factors plays in achieving effective communication. The purpose of this study is, first, to learn the importance of nonverbal communication and what factors that are likely to affect the course of effective and successful communication with people of different cultures. Second, this study focuses on the effect of such nonverbal factors that are present and likely to affect the communication process in the business setting between American business people and Japanese counterparts. The implication of this study is that it is important to know the different non-verbal communication factors that are present in the business setting between Japan and the U.S. in order to achieve sufficient communication in intercultural business setting.

It is an evident aspect that communicating across cultures is associated with problems and barriers to communication. The first big problem getting in mind is the language itself, because two communication partners must own one language which both of them are able to speak.

Introduction Nonverbal communication accompanies us mostly unconsciously every day. We do not think what kind of gestures or distance is appropriate in certain situations. However about 60 to 65 percent of all meaning created in human encounters derives from nonverbal cues (KNAPP:246). Studies of nonverbal communication can be traced back till times of the Roman Empire. The rhetorical treatises of Quintilian and Cicero already dealt with the meaning of hand gestures. However just in the seventeenth century with Bonifcio's and Bulwer's works gestures obtained a status "of a subject of its one right" (BULL:25). Yet elaborate study of nonverbal communication is only possible since sophisticated recording techniques have been developed which allow repeated viewing and analysis of human behaviour (for instance data gloves or video tapes). As a consequence studies of nonverbal communication developed rather lately. In the late fifties of the last century Edward HALL and Ray BIRDWHISTELL made first attempts to study nonverbal behaviour not only as a psychological function but as a means of communication. In general studies of nonverbal communication emerged as a reaction to the "overwhelming emphasis placed on verbal behaviour in the field of communication" (JONES/LEBARON:512). Subsequent a number of studies were conducted so that in the seventies nonverbal communication became an established topic (HELLER:2). In the nineties space and place received renewed interest.. This paper introduces the vast field of nonverbal communication. It is aimed at giving an overview of the different forms while focussing on proxemics, as "all behavior is located in and constructed of space"(LOW/ZÚÑIGA:1)

Only the unsuccessful businessperson fails to learn the importance of those when talking with potential clients. When we talk with our gestures and movements, a variety of meanings can be generated. Especially during introductory situations a person must know the appropriate greeting in order to convey the intended content. To nod, bow, kiss, shake hands, smile, wave, touch cheeks, or rub noses are common greetings used in various parts of the world. Use an inappropriate gesture and the door may never open to you. Intercultural interactions are never without some problems. Linguistic barriers are compounded by differences in nonverbal communication. Actually, nonverbal communication comprises a big block within communication as a whole. The nonverbal communication takes up around 65-70 percent of the meaning conveyed by a spoken message. It is widely accepted and known that nonverbal communication-especially gestures and body movements-bring the potential to get along better with different cultures and, of course, with business partners. Although it is very time-consuming, learning these signals, brings so many positive aspects that it is worth the trouble of learning the nuances and differences. Nonverbal communication as indicated above is a big topic. Breaking it down shows that it consists of many more subparts. Gestures and body movements are one of the most important aspects of nonverbal communication. By analyzing all gestures and body movements I want to show the different interplay of intent, comprehension and impact people can cause to international business processes and their outcomes by interacting with one another in different cultures.
