Book excerpt: Positive academic mindsets, which are one's attitudes or beliefs that specifically pertain to academic performance, have been found to create an impetus for students to persist in their schoolwork, propelling oneself towards better academic behaviors, and ultimately improved academic performance. Although mindset research has examined the impact of mindsets on Hispanic and African-American youth, little is known about its effects on Asian American youth, specifically Southeast Asian youth. The present study examined the effects of a 3-session growth mindset training on ninth and tenth grade students who identified as Southeast Asian, and 2 Southeast Asian families. Questionnaires were completed by the participants to obtain demographic information, mindset status, and other variables of interest (e.g., interest in school, grit). Results indicated that growth mindset and grit were positively correlated; however, results showed that there was no significant improvement in academic performance after the targeted training. Findings from this study suggest that trainings aimed to change mindsets may be insufficient for students to engage in positive academic outcomes based on the adoption of a growth mindset. Additionally, further examination into the subjective experiences of adolescents in school due to the seemingly context-dependent nature of mindset trainings would provide increased understanding into the complexities of a student's lowered academic achievement. Limitations, reasons for the lack of statistical significance, and recommendations for future studies are discussed.

Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) teaches practical applied learning courses to students and arm them with the necessary skills to tackle the many challenges of being an entrepreneur.Both tangible and intangible barriers to entrepreneurship were discussed in the writing. One of the intangible barriers discussed was the element of mindset. In some of the case studies, it appeared fear of failure was a major mindset barrier to would-be entrepreneurs pursuing their business ideas to actualize them. Measures carried out to remove the stigmatization of failure are discussed in the volume.

Working from a unique theoretical foundation that combines linguistic anthropology, Asian American studies, and education, and using rigorous linguistic anthropological tools to closely examine video- and audio- recorded interactions gathered during the video-making project (in which teen participants learned the skills for creating their own video and adult staff learned to respect and value the local knowledge of youth), the author builds a compelling link between micro-level uses of language and macro-level discourses of identity, race, ethnicity, and culture. In this study of the ways in which teens draw on and play with circulating stereotypes of the selfand the other, Reyes uniquely illustrates how individuals can reappropriate stereotypes of their ethnic group as a resource to position themselves and others in interactionally meaningful ways, to accomplish new social actions, and to assign new meanings to stereotypes. Chitra Sankaran refocuses the global lens on these two rapidly developing regions of Asia. Combining South Asian and Southeast Asian philosophical views and folk perspectives with mainstream ecocritical and ecofeminist theories, she generates a localized critical idiom that qualifies and subverts some established theoretical assumptions. This pioneering study, introducing a corpus of more than thirty ecofictions by women writers from twelve countries in South and Southeast Asia, examines how recent global threats to ecosystems, in both nature and culture, impact subdominant groups, including women. This new corpus reveals how women and subalterns engage with various aspects of critical ecologies. Using ecofeminist theory augmented by postcolonial and risk theories as the main theoretical framework, Sankaran argues that these women writers present unique perspectives that review Asian women’s relationships to human and nonhuman worlds.
