Book The Role of Information Technology in Quality Management Implementation and Its Impact on Organizational Performance An Analysis of United States Telecommunications Organizations

Download or read book The Role of Information Technology in Quality Management Implementation and Its Impact on Organizational Performance An Analysis of United States Telecommunications Organizations written by Lucas Josline Edward and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the effects of quality management (QM) and information technology (IT) on organizational performance and the role of IT in QM implementation within U.S. telecommunications organizations. Several steps including a literature review, an initial review survey by QM experts, and development and analysis of pretest and pilot surveys were used to develop the survey instrument. Based on the pretest and pilot survey results, the survey instrument was modified and the research was divided into two phases. In the first phase, a quantitative survey was conducted to explore the effects of QM and IT on organizational performance. In the second phase, a case study approach was used to explore the IT role in QM implementation. The quantitative study results reveal that U.S. telecommunications organizations have implemented QM programs to satisfy customers. In addition to reducing expenses, QM contributes to factors such as conformance to requirements, customer loyalty and retention, and customer satisfaction. Similarly, IT contributes to factors such as overall performance, customer satisfaction, and employee productivity. The case study results reveal that the IT usage varies among the 12 dimensions of QM. Factors such as customer management, communication, teamwork, and process improvement measurement exhibit high levels of IT usage. Factors such as operational quality planning and strategic quality management exhibit moderate IT usage. IT plays some role in factors such as supplier management, culture, empowerment, and quality citizenship. Limitations, academic and managerial implications are included as well, and suggestions for further research are also offered.

Book Putting the Information Infrastructure to Work

Download or read book Putting the Information Infrastructure to Work written by United States. Information Infrastructure Task Force. Committee on Applications and Technology and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1994 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interconnection of computer networks, telecommunications services, and applications, the National Information Infrastructure (NII) can open up new vistas and profoundly change much of American life. This report explores some of the opportunities and obstacles to the use of the NII by people and organizations. The goal is to express how improvements in the technical foundation upon which all modern communications rests can benefit all Americans by focusing on the uses of the NII and the benefits to be derived by applications of advanced computing and communications technologies. This document describes how the evolving NII can: enhance the competitiveness of our manufacturing base; increase speed and efficiency of electronic commerce; improve health care delivery and control costs; promote development and accessibility of quality education and lifelong learning; improve effectiveness of environmental monitoring and assessing human impacts upon the earth; sustain the role of libraries as agents of democratic and equal access to information; and provide government services to the public faster, more responsively, and more efficiently. In addition to articulating a national vision that can serve as a framework for discussion and dialogue, a second goal is to improve public policy-making, to identify critical barriers, enablers, and the tools of government action most effective in each of these areas. In this way, the benefits of government activities in support of the NII can be maximized, while minimizing unintended or undesirable consequences. Several themes emerge: equity of access; pursuit of demonstrations and pilot projects; standards setting process; privacy and communications security; training and support; identification of long-term research and development priorities; and performance measurements to assess both public and private investments and experiments. It is hoped that careful consideration of the policy questions raised here will both facilitate the development of the NII and guide its evolution so that it best meets public purposes. (MAS)
