Book excerpt: This research aims to serve as a starting point to the exploration of the current status of autism in Sudan and how to best utilize available Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to educate and support parents and educators. Currently, there is no official published data on the prevalence of autism in Sudan or the related available services and facilities. To attempt to expand upon the limited existing knowledge, the researcher collected all available data and information through Sudanese Facebook groups and pages. The research was observational in nature. Findings indicated that raising a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Sudan can be rather challenging, particularly for parents who do not have easy access to ASD treatment. In general, parents in this study expressed minimal satisfaction with the available treatments and services that their children were receiving. Parents repeatedly addressed problems regarding a lack of access, the overwhelming expense, and the need for more awareness and acceptance of autism within Sudanese society. In response to these issues, some of the parents formed small support groups and met regularly to share experiences and discuss solutions. Additionally, some parents are creating discrete Facebook pages to help normalize autism and combat misinformation.

Research has shown that people with autism reveals positive behavior while interacting with innovative information technologies as compared to therapies. This review focuses on the possible use of ICT in the education and development of the people with autism and reducing their difficulties in communication. A variety of different ICT applications for the treatment of autism including the use of interactive virtual environments, devices, computers, serious games and avatars will be discussed in this paper. ICT is a rapidly developing area of research to be used as a therapy for autism. Despite the fact that ICT has exciting positive results, most of the ICT proposals or implementations have limited use, performance and capabilities in actual conditions. Interactive devices, including robotics are being developed and used for the education and development of the people with autism. These devices teach and practice a skill, promote behaviors and provide feedback in specific environments. Development of interactive devices including robots having humanlike abilities and joint attention are the issues that are to be focused in the future research for assisting the people with autism. This book summarizes the results and conclusions of HANDS, an international research and development project supported by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission. The aim of the HANDS project was to develop and test a smartphone-based cognitive support system for intellectually able young people with ASDs, with a focus on use in secondary school environments. The results presented here include the HANDS system: a partly mobile, partly web-based cognitive support system based on principles of Persuasive Design; a unique multi-mode research methodology, applying both various quantitative and qualitative techniques to test the applicability and efficiency of the system; an exploration of relevant conceptual issues from the point of view of Persuasive Design and its philosophical foundations; a mapping of key ethical issues related to developing and applying mobile ICT for individuals with autism and other cognitive impairments. The experiences of teachers who implemented the system in school environments are also summarized. These results can be seen as snapshots of an evolutionary process, but the conclusions drawn here are significant for future developments with mobile assistive technology for people with ASD, as well as for other conditions. The book will be of interest to professionals working with young people with ASD, human-computer interaction professionals, as well as others working in the broader field of mobile assistive technology.

Over the years, acceptance researchers have become more interested in understanding the factors influencing the adoption of technologies in various settings. From the literature, much research has been done to understand technology acceptance in the business contexts. This is understandable, given the close relationship between the appropriate uses of technology and profit margin. In most of the acceptance studies, researchers have sought to identify and understand the forces that shape users’ acceptance so as to influence the design and implementation process in ways to avoid or minimize resistance or rejection when users interact with technology. Traditionally, it has been observed that developers and procurers of technological resources could rely on authority to ensure that technology was used, which is true in many industrial and organizational contexts. However, with the increasing demands for educational applications of information technology and changing working practices, there is s need to re-examine user acceptance issues as they emerge within and outside of the contexts in which technology was implemented. This is true in the education milieu where teachers exercise the autonomy to decide on what and how technology will be used for teaching and learning purposes. Although they are guided by national and local policies to use technology in the classrooms, teachers spent much of their planning time to consider how technology could be harnessed for effective lesson delivery and assessment to be conducted. These circumstances have provided the impetus for researchers to study technology acceptance in educational settings. Although these studies have typically involved students and teachers as participants, their findings have far-reaching implications for school leaders, policy makers, and other stakeholders. The book is a critical and specialized source that describes recent research on technology acceptance in education represented by educators and researchers from around the world such as Australia, Belgium, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom, and United States of America.

A Descriptive Survey research clarifies the actual use of children with autism to ICT tools through the perspectives of their parents and their caregivers. A comparison between both views interweaving with various demographic criteria clarifies a larger outlook of the issue. The topic was explored through the Uses & Gratification and Digital Divide theories and further added the Laswell Model to elucidate possible clarifications to realize the integration of children with autism in the Egyptian society through the use of ICT tools. „Who, says what to whom‟ principle is scrutinized to identify the best mode to address the information to the children with Autism and make it reach them, based on research and experience. Although the innate limitations of children with Autism can impede integration willingness, the role of ICT can be shaped to serve the parents and caregivers with valid ideas, information and handling mechanisms with the aim of supporting the children with Autism to develop improved behavioral patterns. These techniques will help people affected with autism to be more accepted within the society‟s social code of conduct, and consequently more integrated. High importance is given to early intervention that avoids the hassle of unlearning negative traits. iii The research proved that neither the standard of education nor the financial capabilities of the parents, directly affects the child with Autism‟s acquisition of ICT tools thus the integration within the society. Computer tablets in particular and various ICT tools in general are provided, but the main issue is the awareness and training of the parents and caregivers to know that the child‟s use should be accompanied and tutored for best outcomes. A further step in the research focuses on the correct choice and use of the applications installed on the computer tablets and assistive ICT tools to be tailored to help each child‟s personalized need.

Chapter six describes the applications of assistive software products in children with autism spectrum disorders, where researchers deal with multiple factors to get closer to creating a model for children with autism for use in creating interactive apps. Chapter seven sheds light on the newest contributions in virtual-reality (VR) based intervention in neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's and/or Parkinson's diseases, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or multiple sclerosis). The outcomes in the majority of VR based interventions were positive.
