Book The Role of Education in Cuba s Future

Download or read book The Role of Education in Cuba s Future written by Andy S. Gomez and published by . This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the fall of the Soviet Union, there has been a rapid transition from communist governments to more democratic governments in Central and Eastern Europe. In most of these situations, the changes and pre-transition analyses have focused on the areas of political, economic, and legal transformation and have paid very little attention to the impact such adjustments will have on the people of these countries and their adaptation to the changes. Seldom did the policy makers of these countries take into consideration the impact such "changes" would have on the physical and psychological needs of its citizens. The people that lived under totalitarian regimes had to survive within a "culture of fear." Like the people of Cuba, they developed a set of values and attitudes shaped by the formal indoctrination that defined their daily behavior in order to align their own wants and needs to the restrictions imposed by the state. C.C. Hughes (1993) defines "culture" as: (1) a socially transmitted system of ideas, (2) that shapes and describes experiences, (3) gives names to surrounding reality, (4) is shared by members of a particular group and, (5) coordinates and determines behavior. Hughes further defined "cultural process" as a means of conveying values across the generations. Cultures, in turn, develop a system of "social values", which are defined as the ideals, customs and institutions of a society. This paper will demonstrate how the role of education in the future of Cuba will be one of the leading factors in transforming the psychological values and attitudes of the population in order to develop a civil society and eventually sustain a democratic state.

Book Cuba s Academic Advantage

Download or read book Cuba s Academic Advantage written by Martin Carnoy and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Martin Carnoy explores the surprising success of the Cuban educational system, where the average elementary school student learns much more than her Latin American peers. In developing the case for Cuba's supportive social context and centralized management of education, Carnoy asks important questions about educational systems in general. How responsible should government be for creating environments that encourage academic achievement? How much autonomy should teachers and schools have over their classrooms? Is there an inherent tradeoff between promoting individual choice and a better system of schooling? Cuba's Academic Advantage challenges many prevailing views about the effectiveness of educational markets, school and teacher autonomy, decentralized decision-making, and government responsibility for children's social and economic welfare. Drawing on interviews with teachers, principals, and policymakers, as well as hours of videotaped material taken in more than 30 classrooms, this book brings new evidence to bear on controversial educational issues currently under debate in many countries.

Book Rebel Literacy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mark Abendroth
  • Publisher : Litwin Books
  • Release : 2014-05-14
  • ISBN : 1936117398
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Rebel Literacy written by Mark Abendroth and published by Litwin Books. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebel Literacy is a look at Cuba's National Literacy Campaign of 1961 in historical and global contexts. The Cuban Revolution cannot be understood without a careful study of Cuba's prior struggles for national sovereignty. Similarly, an understanding of Cuba's National Literacy Campaign demands an inquiry into the historical currents of popular movements in Cuba to make education a right for all. The scope of this book, though, does not end with 1961 and is not limited to Cuba and its historical relations with Spain, the United States, and the former Soviet Union. Nearly 50 years after the Year of Education in Cuba, the Literacy Campaign's legacy is evident throughout Latin America and the 'Third World.' A world-wide movement today continues against neoliberalism and for a more humane and democratic global political economy. It is spreading literacy for critical global citizenship, and Cuba's National Literacy Campaign is a part of the foundation making this global movement possible. The author collected about 100 testimonies of participants in the Campaign, and many of their stories and perspectives are highlighted in one of the chapters. Theirs are the stories of perhaps the world's greatest educational accomplishment of the 20th Century, and critical educators of the 21st Century must not overlook the arduous and fruitful work that ordinary Cubans, many in their youth, contributed toward a nationalism and internationalism of emancipation.

Book Citizen Engagement in Cuba

Download or read book Citizen Engagement in Cuba written by James A. Baer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizen Engagement in Cuba: Neighbors and the State in Pogolotti examines citizen engagement at the local level in Cuba through projects initiated by the community since the 1990s. The nature of citizen participation in Cuba is not clearly understood by many in the United States, where the communist government is conflated with the Soviet states of Eastern Europe as a totalitarian regime in which the people of Cuba are helpless to confront, and punished when they do. The reality in Cuba is much more nuanced. This book discusses this reality through a focus on Pogolotti, reflecting on its history as the first low-cost housing community in Cuba in 1910. This community is but one example of a neighborhood where projects represent active participation by citizens. The willingness of communist authorities to work with officially sanctioned workshops and partner with civic groups indicates a level of citizen participation that has not been studied fully and provides an understanding of the relationship between citizens and the state in Cuba.

Book Education in Latin America

Download or read book Education in Latin America written by Colin Brock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1985. Latin America is a region where widespread economic, social and political changes are taking place. Some countries, such as Brazil, are becoming new industrial giants, whereas others with good prospects are performing poorly in the economic sphere. In politics, countries such as Cuba are leading world revolutionary powers; whilst in others right-wing military regimes prevail. Political revolutions occur frequently. All this change and instability is closely bound up with education. Education systems and courses are greatly affected by social, political and economic changes; and at the same time education is used to steer changes in particular directions. This book surveys the current state of education in Latin America. It reviews the nature of education systems and the content of courses, and discusses a range of key themes, in particular those concerned with the connections between education and political, economic and social change. There is no attempt in the book to provide a blanket coverage of educational issues and problems in Latin America, but rather to concentrate on a description and critical analysis of formal educational provisions in some countries of the region.

Book The State Bureaucracy And The Cuban Schools

Download or read book The State Bureaucracy And The Cuban Schools written by Sheryl Lutjens and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1996-08-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1980s Cuba began a process of rectificacion - a reform process that has bucked the trends of economic and political liberalization that are reshaping the global order. Sustaining an official commitment to socialism in the face of economic crisis and international pressures, Cuba's survival seems puzzling indeed. Sheryl Lutjens uses the Cuban experience as a context for investigating the problematic of democracy and democratic change. Identifying bureaucratic domination as a problem for democracy in all modern states, Lutjens turns to an examination of Cuban schools to explore questions of bureaucracy and participation. Exploring development and reform in the Cuban state, Lutjens looks at the effects of strong centralization in education policy, the central place of education in the economic and political goals of the revolution, and the extensive postrevolutionary experience with local participation in the educational system. She argues that the Cuban experience with schools and educational performance suggests that scholars can break through traditional categories and concepts if they take into account the participation of ordinary people.
