Although parental influence wanes during the college years, research suggests that parental behaviors in high school, including monitoring, alcohol-specific control (i.e., rules or communication), and problematic modeling of drinking, continue to predict their children's drinking even into college. This dissertation tests a model, developed by the author, that posits prospective associations between the parental behaviors discussed above and college student problematic drinking, mediated by student alcohol-related cognitions, namely, self-efficacy to avoid alcohol, negative alcohol expectancies, and peer drinking norms. Tests were conducted of the following main hypotheses: (1) parental behaviors in the senior year of high school are associated with a number of college freshmen's drinking outcomes, including heavy drinking, alcohol problems, and male and female binge drinking, after statistically controlling for significant covariates, such as gender, race, and past student drinking, and (2) each of the student alcohol-related cognitions mediates the relationships between parental behaviors and student drinking. Data to test these hypotheses were collected at one time point from an undergraduate population at a large, public university, and data on all measures was provided by student self-report (N = 292). Multiple regression analyses indicated that, for the most part, results were consistent with predictions. Greater maternal drinking was significantly and directly associated with greater student heavy drinking, and greater paternal drinking was significantly and directly associated with greater alcohol problems. Greater parental alcohol-specific monitoring was significantly and directly associated with lower heavy drinking and alcohol problems, while greater alcohol-specific rules was significantly and directly associated with lower heavy drinking and male binge drinking. Unexpectedly, greater alcohol-specific communication was significantly and directly associated with greater, not lower, student heavy drinking and alcohol problems and female binge drinking. Mediational analyses revealed that all three of the student alcohol-related cognitions mediated several relationships between parental behaviors and student drinking outcomes. Surprisingly, greater paternal drinking was significantly and indirectly associated with lower, not greater, student heavy drinking, as mediated by greater student negative alcohol expectancies. Methodological limitations notwithstanding, this study is one of the first to test a comprehensive mediated model of parental behaviors, student alcohol-related cognitions, and student drinking.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: The U.S. college environment presents risk of alcohol consumption and related consequences, with more than half of full-time college students reporting alcohol use in the past month and a third engaging in binge drinking (4 + drinks (females)/5+ drinks (males); National Survey on Drug Use and Health [NSDUH], 2018). U.S. college students that identify as Hispanic/Latinx have grown in volume, representing nearly 1 in 5 college students (College Enrollment Statistics, 2022; U.S. Department of Education, 2019). There is indication that Hispanic adolescents experience unique cultural, peer, and family risk factors for alcohol use and related consequences (Goldbach et al., 2015; Jacobs et al., 2016; Segura et al., 2003; Zamboanga et al., 2009). However, there remain unanswered questions on the precise nature of these influences for Hispanic emerging adults in the college environment (Lui & Zamboanga, 2019; Zamboanga et al., 2014). The aims of this scoping review were to examine the literature among Hispanic U.S. college student alcohol use and related consequences for: (1) cultural, peer, and family predictors; and (2) demographic variance by sex, gender, and ethnic subgroup. From the 46 articles identified in PubMed and PsychINFO databases, 80.4% analyzed traditional Hispanic (pan-ethnic) samples and 19.5% analyzed Mexican American samples. Nine additional sources of gray literature identified themes of family and cultural stress among Hispanic college students. Highly acculturated individuals appeared to be more at risk for general consumption, which was characteristic of social motives. High enculturation was associated with drinking related consequences, which could be an indication that these students are more likely to view alcohol use as a coping or conformity motive. There was not full support for familism or first-generation status as protective constructs, and instead, other related components such as communication and religiousness emerged as relevant predictors. More acculturated females tend to be more vulnerable to high stress environments, and in turn binge drinking episodes. Lowered familism, increased traditional machismo (e.g., dominance and toughness), and elevated peer norms were predictors putting males more at risk, an indication that perceptiveness to the influences of peers and family depend on gender. No articles were able to specify variance in predictors by sex, and only articles of Mexican American subgroup were identified, which presents a clear gap for future research to fill.

Alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems are thought to be the one of the most significant concerns on college campuses in the United States. Young adults aged 18-24 years show the highest rates of alcohol use and also have the greatest percentage of problem drinkers, and the rates of binge drinking are higher among college students than for individuals in the same age range who do not attend college. Between 75%-90% of college students drink alcohol, and more than half report heavy or binge drinking. Binge drinking may lead to the experiencing of many negative consequences such as missing class, interpersonal conflict, and even death. In order to prevent or reduce binge drinking among college students, it is important to know the risk and protective factors for binge drinking Previous research has shown that peers' attitudes and behaviors regarding alcohol are related to one's own alcohol consumption. In particular, the influence of same-age peers' behavior regarding alcohol use has been well documented. Contrary to the assumption that parents no longer exert any influence over their college-aged child's alcohol use behavior, previous research has found that parent factors may represent an important protective influence on late adolescent drinking. Parents may continue to influence their children's behavior regarding alcohol use via communication about expectancies, setting limits, and the transmission of values. However, there may be variation in the nature and substance of the parent-child communication about alcohol. Therefore, it is important to examine the nature and content of parent-child communication regarding alcohol use. The aim of the current study was to examine the effects of parental communication on college student binge drinking. The various consequences of binge drinking may be the most salient factors involving the student's decision to engage in binge drinking during college. Thus, it was hypothesized that expectations regarding the physical, social, legal and academic consequences of binge drinking will mediate the relationship between parental communication and binge drinking. These hypotheses were tested using 761 undergraduate students from a large, public university in the Southwest who completed an online survey assessing drinking behavior, including how often the participants talked to their parents about alcohol use and whether or not these communications included discussions about the consequences of heavy drinking. The findings revealed that frequent communication between parents and students actually increases the likelihood of binge drinking episodes. The indirect relationship between communication and binge drinking via communication about the consequences of heavy drinking failed to reach significance.

Book excerpt: Every year as spring break approaches or when another promising young student dies in an alcohol-related tragedy, college drinking becomes a national issue. Although excessive drinking by college students is accepted as a rite of passage by many, alcohol-related tragedies never fail to shock us and to prompt calls for immediate action. When schools respond with well intentioned programs, but the problem persists, it is natural to wonder how much we really understand about excessive, college student drinking. Is it inevitable? Can we take steps to prevent it or reduce its consequences? Why have efforts to date proven ineffective? The fact is that since 1976, when the newly created National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) issued its only report on abusive drinking by college students, research advances have transformed our understanding of alcohol abuse and related problems. For example, we now know that a broad array of factors affect college student drinking behavior. These include an individual's susceptibility to alcohol, campus norms related to drinking, and conditions within the larger community that make alcohol readily accessible and fail to penalize inappropriate use. Together these influences contribute to a culture of drinking that is more damaging and deadly than previously recognized. This report, developed by the NIAAA-supported Task Force on College Drinking after 3 years of intensive discussions, describes our new understanding of dangerous drinking behavior by college students and its consequences for both drinkers and nondrinkers. Rather than debate how many drink how much, the Task Force focused on the consequences. What it found challenges many common assumptions about the size and nature of the problem. Not only do some 1,400 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die every year as a result of hazardous drinking, but a half million suffer unintentional injuries under the influence of alcohol. Another 600,000 are assaulted by fellow drinking students and more than 70,000 are sexually assaulted. The data on academic achievement, damage to facilities, and health problems are equally alarming. The nature of existing data leads to the inference that some college students meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence as currently specified by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV), but are not receiving treatment. Although most students who exhibit dangerous drinking behavior during their college career mature out of heavy drinking, this behavior and its consequences are nonetheless cause for concern. In its report, the Task Force outlines a series of recommendations for colleges and universities, researchers, and NIAAA. What distinguishes this guidance from others is its firm reliance on scientific evidence and its call for collaboration between academic institutions and researchers. In response to the information and recommendations in this report, NIAAA is committing an additional $8 million over the next two fiscal years to the issue of college drinking. It also is collaborating with several college presidents to determine the effectiveness of policies aimed at reducing the problem. The chancellor of a university that recently suffered the alcohol-related death of one of its students said, "Our children's lives are at real risk, and universities need to make every effort to prevent any more lives from being wasted." This report underscores the wisdom of that advice and urges us to join forces in changing the culture of drinking on our Nation's campuses from one that fosters destructive behavior to one that discourages it.

Limited literature is present to evaluate the relationship between parental influences and college student drinking. This paper surveyed 1,426 parent-student dyads to investigate key measures concerning college student drinking, parental permissiveness, and family structure. Significant results of this study showed that parental permissiveness is positively associated with college student drinking. Additionally, the interaction between parental permissiveness and family structure revealed a significant moderating influence played by family structure. This moderating influence suggests that while students from both intact families and non-intact families consume greater amounts of alcohol with increasing permissiveness, permissiveness is riskier for intact families. These results suggest that family structure does indeed play a moderating role in the relationship between parental permissiveness and college student drinking. Additionally, sex difference models were run to see if the moderating effect of family structure changes between female and male students. Only the female model was significant and showed a similar moderation effect of family structure as the whole sample model. The results of this study provide an important bridge to address a significant gap in the literature and suggest that future parent-based interventions should consider modifying content to account for differing family structures.

Book excerpt: The first year of college may be a salient time period for the development of drinking practices in college populations. While parenting styles have been associated with global self-regulation, resistance to peer influence and college student drinking behaviors, a comprehensive evaluation of these relationships has yet to be established. Researchers have demonstrated that self-regulation acts as both a predictor and moderator of resistance to peer influence, which has been shown to be a more proximal predictor of drinking behaviors. While relationships between global self-regulation, parenting, and drinking have been empirically established, less attention has been given to specific methods of selfregulation such as regulatory focus. Thus, the current study examined the relationships between parenting styles, two modes of regulatory focus (i.e., promotion and prevention focus), resistance to peer influence and drinking behaviors in first year college students. It was hypothesized that regulatory focus and resistance to peer influence would be partial mediators between parenting styles and drinking behaviors, such that parenting styles would predict regulatory focus, which would in turn predict resistance to peer influence; subsequently, peer influence would predict drinking behaviors. It was also hypothesized that each mode of regulatory focus would moderate the manner in which resistance to peer influence predicts drinking behaviors. Finally, given that researchers have also found race to be a common influential factor on all variables within the current study, racial differences across the aforementioned relationships were also examined. The current study sampled 323 college freshmen from a large southeastern college student population. A structural equation modeling approach was used to examine all variables of interest. Results indicated that promotion-focused self-regulation and resistance to peer influence sequentially mediated relationships between authoritative and permissive parenting styles and drinking behaviors. Prevention focused self-regulation was not associated with resistance to peer influence; thus, these constructs did not sequentially mediate relationships between parenting and drinking behaviors. Results also indicated that when resistance to peer influence mediated the relationship between a given parenting style and drinking behavior, it was also moderated by a mode of regulatory focus. Finally, while race was not shown to moderate either sequential mediation model, the influence of race on individual constructs was shown to be moderated by regulatory focus. Results of this study further inform literature on the effects of social learning constructs on drinking behaviors within the first year of matriculating to college. These results also provided further knowledge on what social (i.e., parenting, peer influence) and internal (regulatory focus) components may be important targets in alcohol interventions for college freshmen. --Page ii.
