Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study, using a phenomenological grounded theory approach, is to ascertain from the perspective of Mexican immigrant victims of intimate partner violence, the structural and cultural factors at play in the manifestation of abuse and help seeking. A convenience sample 29 of recently arrived Mexican immigrant victims of domestic violence and a purposive sample 15 of service providers were interviewed in New York City and St. Louis. Key findings emerged regarding the role of gender norms and expectations, value placed on children and motherhood as well as the role of family of origin social network ties in the manifestation of abuse. Findings were also reported on the predominant help seeking patterns that emerged in the two research sites.

Book excerpt: Domestic violence against women is an oppressive condition that extends across race, class, and gender. This work examines intimate partner violence against women in Memphis, Tennessee, focusing on Mexican immigrant and Mexican American female survivors of domestic violence. Author M. Helena Vanderlei Collins interviewed ten Mexican immigrant women and seven Mexican American women to investigate factors that influence helpseeking behavior. Collins focused on the perceptions of Mexican immigrant and Mexican American women regarding the social services available to them and explored how their help-seeking behavior is affected by their degree of acculturation and the incidence of intimate partner violence. Collins employed a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to answer seven key research questions. The quantitative instruments included ARSMA-II, the Inventory of Abusive Behavior, and a customized demographic questionnaire. The qualitative data was drawn from the semi-structured interviews with the domestic violence survivors. Collins concluded her study by describing the challenges women of Hispanic origin face when seeking help from social service providers and by offering recommendations on how to improve the quality of services these women receive.

Book excerpt: Women's responses to abuse reflect their particular socio-cultural contexts, available resources, and perceived options. In the present study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 75 battered women of Mexican-origin. The study aimed first, to document how these women act to survive abuse, and second, to explore whether socio-cultural variables were associated with help-seeking. Help-seeking was defined as use of formal (i.e., shelter) and informal (i.e., family) sources, as well as the personal strategies (i.e., lock one's self in a room) that women use to survive abuse. Socio-cultural variables included two cultural variables: machismo (belief in traditional gender roles, male dominance, and female passivity) and familismo (valuing family obligation, cohesion, and reciprocity), and four socio-structural variables: income, education, English proficiency, and immigrant status. Results indicated that, consistent with a survivor theory perspective, participants sought help more than once from several formal and informal help sources; some (i.e., shelter and family) were perceived as more effective than others (i.e., lawyer and partner's family). Findings further demonstrated that participants engaged in several personal strategies to survive abuse; some (i.e., maintaining a relationship with God) were rated more effective than others (i.e., placating the batterer). Analyses showed women with higher levels of familismo sought informal help more frequently than those with lower levels. Results also indicated that women with only grade school education, no English language skills, and undocumented status sought formal help less frequently than women who were not constrained by these barriers. Contrary to expected results, income and machismo were not found to be related to formal or informal help-seeking. Participants' responses to four open-ended questions provide context to empirical findings; responses suggest why particular help sources and strategies were or were not effective and provide suggestions for improving services for this population. This study provides socio-culturally relevant information for professionals designing interventions for battered women of Mexican-origin. Findings illuminate battered Mexican-origin women's strengths, as well as barriers that impede their efforts to survive abuse. The study contributes to existing research because it focused on a specific subset of battered Latinas; gathered information on the frequency and perceived effectiveness of participants' use of a wide array of help sources and strategies; included a large sample and empirical analyses; and tested whether sociocultural variables related to participants' help-seeking.

Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this survey study is to clarify the relationship between the traditional cultural values that Mexican women are expected to uphold in their heterosexual relationships, and the nontraditional actions that Mexican women may choose in responding to an abusive partner. 115 Mexican and Mexican-American women from a Southern California Roman Catholic Church were sampled. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine if traditional and nontraditional women who are extroverted demonstrate help-seeking behavior. Results indicated that traditional women were more likely to reach out for help than non-traditional women. Also, women who were extroverted demonstrated higher levels of help seeking behavior. In addition, educated daughters of mothers with less education were less traditional. Personality characteristics, level of education, and degree of acculturation were found to be important factors that influence Marianismo and help seeking behavior. Extroverted traditional women were more likely to ask for help than introverted traditional women. The findings have relevant implications for traditional introverted women because they are less likely to seek help for services.
