It is a diverse mosaic of subjective, often contradictory interpretations and discrepant applications that prohibit a narrow, one-dimensional approach. This book argues that to uncover this complex reality and achieve a more accurate understanding of Islam as a lived religion, it is imperative to consider Islam from the point of view of human beings who practice their faith. Consequently, this book provides an important contribution through a detailed ethnographic study of two contemporary Sufi communities. Although both groups shared much in common, there was a fundamental, almost perplexing range of theological convictions and ritual implementations. This book explores the mechanism that accounts for such diversity, arguing for a direct correlation between Sufi multiformity and the agency of the spiritual leader, the Shaikh. Empirical research regarding the authority by which Shaikhs subjectively generate legitimate adaptations that shape the contours of religious belief are lacking. This study is significant, because it focuses on how leadership operates in Sufism, highlighting the primacy of the Shaikh in the selection and appropriation of inherited norms.

Book excerpt: Using the major theories of humor as a point of departure, Humor in Pedagogy in Tertiary Education in the Age of COVID-19: Bosnia in Comparative Perspective argues for the expanded use of humor as pedagogy in Bosnian tertiary education, unfazed by the pandemic infections of COVID-19, with teachable lessons for other countries. It argues that the measures put in place to contain the spread of the pandemic neither foreclosed nor rendered less exigent, the drive for more quality education in Bosnia achieved through various means that include creative application of humor in tertiary education. Rather than minimize it, the era of non-classroom-based instructions ushered by COVID-19 offers an opportunity to promote intelligible learning by infusion of humor into every aspect of tertiary instruction, from course syllabus to student evaluation of faculty teaching. Key highlights of this book include the features of Bosnian self-parody that it articulates as material for pedagogy in Bosnian tertiary classrooms, the boundaries for judicious use of humor in pedagogy that it spells out, and its formulation related to the continued value of humor in the Bosnian tertiary classroom unfazed by the public health challenges of COVID-19. The book is designed as an innovative and less contentious contribution to the debates on educational reforms in postwar Bosnia, a contribution focused positively around the quality—and quantity—of instructions in tertiary institutions in Bosnia.

Central to the Croatian experience has been the issue of nationalism and whether the Croatian state should be defined as a citizens’ state (with members of all nationality groups treated as equal) or as a national state of the Croats (with a consequent privileging of Croatian culture and language, but also with a quota system for members of national minorities). Sabrina P. Ramet and Davorka Mati´c have gathered here a series of studies by important scholars to examine the development of Croatia in the aftermath of communism and the war that marred the transition. Sixteen scholars of the region discuss the values and institutions central to Croatia’s transformation from communism and toward liberal democracy. They discuss economic change, political parties, and the uses of history since 1989. To understand the patterns in Croatia, they examine how civic values have been expressed, reinforced, and sometimes challenged through religion, education, and the media. The implications of nationalism in its various manifestations are treated thematically in all the analyses. This book is a companion volume to a similar study on Slovenia, edited by Sabrina P. Ramet and Danica Fink-Hafner and released in fall 2006. Together, these two works form an important case study in comparison and contrast between two countries in the same region going through the transition from communism to liberal democracy.
