This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Role of Bacteria in Infectious Diseases No subject in medicine either in relation to its theory or practice holds at present in any considera ble degree an interest equal to that of the role of micro-organisms to disease. Although in a strict sense not new, it is only within a very recent period that systematic study and scientific research have in vested the theme with an interest by any means gen eral, or elevated it from the domain Of speculative philosophy and pseudo-science. Recent as have been the investigations, it is marvellous to find the flood of literature already contributed. Book The Journal of Infectious Diseases

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Infectious Diseases: Founded by the Memorial Institute for Infectious Diseases My purpose in this address is to give briefly some observations upon the value of the agglutination test in establishing the identity or relationship of bacteria and in detecting the variety of bacteria exciting disease in cases of bacterial infection. During the past three years, in connection with Dr. Katharine R. Collins, I have been more or less occupied in the study of these questions, and in this time I have learned much concerning the difficulties of properly interpreting the results, and of the limitations to the value of the agglutination reaction. It is my hope that a review of some of these experiences may be of interest. Before taking up the discussion of the two topics I wish to touch on some of the points to be thought of in the technique of carrying on the tests. Some Important Points to Consider in Making an Agglutination Test. 1. The quantitative nature of the union between bacteria and agglutinin. This necessitates that with increase in the number of bacteria in the serum dilution there is more material to combine with the agglutinated. A thick emulsion of bacteria is therefore not agglutinated in as high dilutions as a thin emulsion. 2. The varying sensitiveness of the same variety of bacteria from day to day, even when grown from the same stock culture. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Essays, by Various Authors, on Bacteria in Relation to Disease As a rule the following points must be observed in investigating micro-organisms from the point of view of sanitary science. -in the first place, it must be definitely determined whether the organisms in question are pathogenic at all, that is to say, whether they can cause disease. Following on that comes the proof of their inoculability, that is, of the possibility of their transference from one individual to another previously healthy, this transference being attempted both on individuals belonging to the same species as those in whom the disease arose spontaneously or was artificially produced, and on individuals of other species. Next we have to trace out the mode in which the pathogenic organisms enter the animal body, to follow their behaviour out side the body in the air, water, and soil, and finally to determine what in uence reagents may exert upon them either in the way of destroying them or preventing their development. Hygiene is only interested in their existence in animal tissues in so far as an explanation of the mode of infection may thereby be rendered possible, whether, for example, the pathogenic organisms are localized in the alimentary canal, whether they pass into the blood, or whether they form resting spores in the interstices of the tissues. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infectious Diseases: A Practical d104book To discuss bacteriology in relation to the infectious diseases, or to attempt to give any descriptive account of the processes connected with immunity, would be quite foreign to the purposes of a book which concerns itself with the actual state of health of the infected individual. Every student of to-day has ample Opportunity Of acquiring during his curriculum the main elementary facts connected with both subjects, and the latter in particular, with its complicated experiments and its chaotic terminology, does not lend itself satisfactorily to. Condensation. It has been proved that many of the diseases to be discussed in the following pages are due to the invasion of the human organism by specific bacteria. It is reasonable to assume that the others, whose etiology still remains Obscure, will be found to depend on a similar cause. The infecting micro-organism, however, need not necessarily be a bacterium. Microscopic animal parasites have been proved to be responsible for malaria, and some observers hold that both small-pox and scarlet fever are probably the results of protozoal infection. The spirillum of relapsing fever is also held to be of this nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Infectious Diseases Classic Reprint

Download or read book Infectious Diseases Classic Reprint written by James Cornelius Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 958 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infectious Diseases The publication of the Deutsche Klimt: at the beginning of the twentieth century corresponds to an epoch not only in the progress of time but also in the history of medicine. Time, as one of the editors of this great work has well said, moves on without regard to arbitrary divisions such as days, years or centuries and its progress is not measured by milestones. Human knowl edge advances in the same way. If there appear from time to time to be sud den bursts of improvement they will be found upon careful study of the facts to be the manifestations of previous forces acting quietly and progressively just as the orderly succession of the seasons is the result of unnoted but irresistible and continuously acting cosmic energy. Long periods of patient research precede the great discoveries in medicine and broad generalizations rest upon many carefully studied facts. The great events of medical history by which we mark its general progress bear a sort of analogy to the divisions by which we chronicle the passing of the ages. They are the dates of knowledge. The later years of the nineteenth and the opening of the twentieth cen tury constitute one of the most brilliant and impressive of these epochs. To celebrate it important scientific publications, especially in medicine, have been issued in several languages. It is no disparagement of others to say that the Deutsche Klinik, the sum of the collective labor of the Master Minds of Medicine in Germany, stands, as a summary of existing knowledge and as a permanent record of the medical science of our times, in the foremost rank. Those to Whom this work is known in the original will welcome it in its English garb and convenient arrangement. Those to whom it first comes in the translation will find it not only the literary embodiment of the most advanced science but also in a surprising degree adapted to the everyday needs of the practitioner, the student and the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Bacteria and Their Relations to Health and Disease The bacteria are so Often nowadays the subject of discussion and discourse; so much which is at once disquieting and untrue is said about them, and they are Withal Of such prae tical importance to the health and Well-being Of everybody, that it has seemed to the writer worth while to bring together in some simple fashion a little Of our knowledge about them. The aim then Of this book is to present some facts from a small corner Of the domain Of Science in such form as will be plain to the unscientific, and with these some extracts from the lore of the physician which will, it is hoped, be both interesting and useful to the lay reader. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 1112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of the Theory and Practice of Medicine, Vol. 2 of 2: By American Teachers The infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic micro - organisms. The special characters of the micro-organisms which cause the infectious diseases considered in this work are described in the articles treating of these diseases. It is thought desirable to bring together in a separate article certain general considerations concerning infection. The most important advances in our knowledge of infectious diseases have come from the study of bacteria. Some knowledge of the general biology of bacteria is essential to an understand ing of pathogenic bacterial species and of their relations to disease. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1918, Vol. 22 In a previous communication,1 we presented the results of some experimental observations bearing on the relationship between the glo bulin content of an animal's serum and the grade of immunity devel oped in it by immunization with various bacteria. These observations brought out several interesting points concerning the relation of the serum globulins to the antibodies, and especially emphasized the lack Of parallelism between the globulin content of the blood and the con centration of antibodies. During the past year, we have directed our efforts to a consideration of this problem in its bearing on antitoxic immunity. This subject possesses more than academic interest because of the constant association of the antisubstance with the serum glo bulin, and because of the practical application that has been made of this knowledge in the preparation and concentration of antitoxic serums. This book was released on 2017-11-12 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1910, Vol. 7 The attempt was made at first to isolate the streptococci by inoculating a loop of feces into dextrose broth, incubating for various periods from 4 to 96 hours, and then plating on agar. This procedure is effectual in isolating streptococci from polluted water; but with feces it utterly failed in our hands. Spore-forming bacilli were found upon the plates or no growth appeared at all. It is probable that the streptococci were overgrown by other bacteria, perhaps by forms like B. Acidophilus. Book Infectious Diseases of Humans

Download or read book Infectious Diseases of Humans written by Roy M. Anderson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with infectious diseases -- viral, bacterial, protozoan and helminth -- in terms of the dynamics of their interaction with host populations. The book combines mathematical models with extensive use of epidemiological and other data. This analytic framework is highly useful for the evaluation of public health strategies aimed at controlling or eradicating particular infections. Such a framework is increasingly important in light of the widespread concern for primary health care programs aimed at such diseases as measles, malaria, river blindness, sleeping sickness, and schistosomiasis, and the advent of AIDS/HIV and other emerging viruses. Throughout the book, the mathematics is used as a tool for thinking clearly about fundamental and applied problems having to do with infectious diseases. The book is divided into two parts, one dealing with microparasites (viruses, bacteria and protozoans) and the other with macroparasites (helminths and parasitic arthropods). Each part begins with simple models, developed in a biologically intuitive way, and then goes on to develop more complicated and realistic models as tools for public health planning. The book synthesizes previous work in this rapidly growing field (much of which is scattered between the ecological and the medical literature) with a good deal of new material.
