Book excerpt: From the Edgar Award–winning “queen of the American gothics”: A troubled girl in a remote mountain home grapples with a terrifying secret (The New York Times). New York clinical psychologist Lynn McLeod has never backed away from a child in need. But a plea for her services in Blue Ridge country tries Lynn’s compassion. Ten-year-old Jilly is no random traumatized girl. She’s the daughter of Lynn’s unfaithful ex-husband, Stephen. Despite the turbulent emotions it stirs in her, Lynn can’t say no. Perhaps this is her last chance to heal her own wounds . . . From the outside, the Ashe’s cliffside home is an architectural dream. Inside it’s something closer to a nightmare, filled with suspicion, menace, and psychic visions. With an absentee mother off in pursuit of her career and a dispirited father, Jilly can only confide in Lynn, whom she trusts with her most shocking secrets—including those involving murder. With premonitions of another death to come, only Lynn can save Jilly—and the man she once loved—from a mystery that’s about to destroy them all. From the New York Times–bestselling “master of suspense” (Mary Higgins Clark) comes a chilling brew of family secrets and paranormal fears that’s “rock-solid, reliable Whitney” (Kirkus Reviews). This ebook features an illustrated biography of Phyllis A. Whitney including rare images from the author’s estate.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coppa Hembo was a fascinating historical figure. Born of a Maidu father and Washoe mother he would rise to become the primary Huuk (Chief ) for nearly 50 years over the Hill Nisenan band of the Southern Maidu, with authority over the Maidu and Washoe people living on the Divide between the forks of the Natoman (American) River. As a young man he had been attacked by a grizzly bear which he managed to kill, permanently disfigured by the mauling he was given the name Coppa Hembo (Grizzly Bear Killer). He would lead his people in battles against slave raiders but managed to keep his people out of both the First and Second Indian Wars of El Dorado County continuing to live in peace with the horde of invading miners. Coppa Hembo's leadership included arranging for his people to be vaccinated against small pox in 1852. His reputation for wisdom and impartiality found him serving as both a judge and keeper of the peace for both Indians and non-Indians. A staunch proponent of education he arranged to help the local school system during conflicts arising from the American Civil War. He would guide his people into full integration into the American society thus saving them from being rounded up and herded onto reservations. His is not a story of tragedy but instead one of triumph for a true American Hero.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “These essays are not about Chocolate Hills and the tarsiers and the fancy beach clubs and other tourist magnets in Bohol. They are about seemingly mundane things that define a place and bind its people together—childhood games, songs, religious rituals, cultural practices, superstitions and myths, magical creatures. Here you will read about triumphs that united people in pride, disasters that drew them even closer; larger-than-life heroes and everyday heroes; changes that tested their mettle and inspired new ways of seeing as well as values that have endured; cracks in the pavements that mirrored cracks in relationships. Braiding storytelling with fictional devices, the writers merge reportage with self-reflection; weave patterns out of chaos and happenstances; and create a tapestry of memories that restores the past, turning the Bohol they love into the Bohol we love as well.” — Susan Lara

It is only a few hours later when Dark Cloud gives birth to Snow, her overdue son. As her baby grows into a Cheyenne boy and word spreads that white people are coming, the Cheyenne and Arapaho prepare to meet the Kiowa and Comanche to make peace. But as a spotted sickness lurks in the shadows, the tribes must weather the winter with thin hides and little fat. Their troubles have just begun. In Ohio, a few years later, George Custer attends school, graduates, and begins teaching school. At the same time, as Dark Clouds belly swells again and the Native American warriors grow angrier with every unjust raid, Snow has grown into a strong and brave warrior named Bear of the Cheyenne. In this captivating historical novel, two parallel lives intertwine during an intense conflict between culturesone focused on the future and the other clinging to a remembered yesterday. Book The Singing Stone

Download or read book The Singing Stone written by Gary Venn and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It looks ordinary enough - just a smooth, red stone that Miles finds buried in gravel by the river. Until the singing starts. And then the stone begins to glow . . . Miles is impatient to explore his new surroundings after his parents buy a motor camp on the Coromandel Peninsula. But the unsettling discovery of the stone propels Miles into danger. He tries talking to his new friend Oliver about it, who naturally doubts him. Then he mentions it to Melinda, the girl he meets at the camp - at least she appears to believe him - but it's possible Melinda isn't quite what she seems. Slowly, Miles starts to understand for himself what the stone is capable of. How it changes everything it touches. And how someone is looking for it, calling to it. Wanting it back."--Publisher's description.

Book Refuge of Whirling Light

Download or read book Refuge of Whirling Light written by Mary Beath and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One bright winter afternoon along an empty New Mexico road, Mary Beath discovered these inexplicable words painted on a peeling wooden sign: Refuge of Whirling Light. That moment could stand for what she offers the reader: the pleasures and insights of the unexpected, the sensations of freedom and belonging that have always drawn her to wander the land alone. "Beath's intensely visual story poems are utterly transporting, taking you out to longed-after landscapes and, at the exact same time, into the terrain of our hearts and souls. In the tradition of other keen-eyed, gutsy women who have bound themselves to the Southwest, Beath expresses for all of us--men and women--our desires for love and liberation, and how the land, every day, if we watch closely, offers us metaphors for both."--Susan J. Douglas, author of Where the Girls Are and The Mommy Myth "Powered by a rigorously disciplined and analytical mind, these poems are never content to dwell in mere description but press on into far more complex interrogations of the world's nature, ecology, and systems of knowledge."--Craig Watson, author of True News and Free Will "Although written about familiar places--Chaco Canyon, Abiquiu, the Four Corners--these poems chart a unique geography. This is the terrain of wind, singing frogs, storms, and changing light, of risk and silence and sexual desire, of that which is both wild and holy. I love the 'unbounded, gutsy weather' of these poems."--Anne Batterson, author of The Black Swan

Book Performing the Community

  • Author : Cora Govers
  • Publisher : LIT Verlag Münster
  • Release : 2006

  • Pages : 350 pages

Download or read book Performing the Community written by Cora Govers and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2006 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic liberalization, modern mass media, and new religious and political movements have touched even the most remote areas in Mexico, and the Northern Highlands of the state of Puebla are no exception. When this coincides with recent infrastructures such as roads and electricity and new income sources from cash crop production and urban migration, the nature of rural communities rapidly changes. This study shows how the people of the Totonac mountain village of Nanacatln deal with their increasingly pluriform and differentiated local world. By performing stories, rituals, and exchanges they have countered centrifugal cultural and social forces. Rather than leading to the demise of the community, modernization and globalization thus seem to have reinforced the sense of local belonging. How is this possible? This anthropological analysis points at the simultaneous efforts of new and old cultural brokers--ritual specialists and healers as well as young migrants--who recreate the community by linking the outside world to local customs. Their initiatives are taken up by women, crucial for community building through elaborate food exchanges, and men, whose involvement is central to public ritual life. Their combined efforts create a living community and link the village past to its rural- urban present and future, as a place of belonging in times of change. Cora Govers is a senior staff member at the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
