The author argues that neither economic variables, nor national culture or history are what account for their successes. Instead, he illustrates that the electoral success of populist parties in Western Europe, such as the French Front National or the Alternative for Germany, is best understood as the unintended consequence of misleading political messaging on the part of established political actors. A two-level theory explains why moderate politicians have changed their approaches to political messaging, potentially benefiting the nationalist, anti-elitist and anti-immigration rhetoric of their populist contenders. Lastly, the book’s theoretical assumptions are empirically validated by case studies on the immigration societies of Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Book excerpt: Despite the increasing academic interest in populism, we still lack understanding of individual factors contributing to populist voting. One of the main reasons for this is that populism is almost always attached to other ideologies which makes it difficult to isolate factors. This book draws on an innovative research design by comparing the reasons to vote for six populist parties which differ remarkably in terms of their host ideology in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany. The results show that populist voters are motivated by their dissatisfaction with the functioning of democracy and a desire for more direct democracy. Furthermore it appears that populist parties do not mobilize among one specific social group although deprived groups are generally more susceptible to populist voting. Finally, this study explored why some populist parties persist while others decline. Origins of party formation and how leaders organize their party internally seem the most important factors determining party persistence. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of populism, European politics and contemporary political theory.

The phenomenon of populism is typically seen as something adverse and, in the European context routinely related to xenophobic politics. What populism exactly is and who its main representatives are, however, often remains unclear. This text has two main aims: to identify populist parties in 21st century Europe and to explain their electoral performance. It argues that populist parties should not be dismissed as dangerous pariahs out of hand but rather that their rise tells us something about the state of representative democracy. The study has a broad scope, including populist parties of various ideological kinds – thus moving beyond examples of the ‘right’ – and covering long-established Western European countries as well as post-communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe. It presents the results of an innovative mixed-methods research project, combining a fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) of populist parties in 31 European countries with three in-depth case studies of the Netherlands, Poland and the United Kingdom.

The volume, composed of eight chapters, investigates how different populist parties in the European Union have been affected by the various crises, disentangling the role of the Great Recession vis-à-vis other factors (such as political and party system factors, but also structural social changes or cultural opportunities) in the growing strength of populist parties in various European countries. Populist parties and movements have made impressive electoral victories at the ballot box - from the 2016 BREXIT referendum in Britain to national elections in Spain. Populism is a political approach that defends the interests and champions the power of ordinary people. It includes a wide set of political movements, such as anti-euro and anti-immigration parties in Europe, Podemos (Yes, We Can) and Movimento 5 Stelle (Five Star Movement) in Spain and Italy respectively, Trump's anti-trade nationalist call in the US, the economic populism of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, and many other political movements in between. What all these political movements have in common is an anti-establishment rhetoric, a claim to speak on behalf of the people against the elites, opposition to globalization and multiculturalism and often an inclination to authoritarian power. Right wing political parties offer to the victims of globalization the opportunity to voice out their fear and anger. Voters with low levels of education and in traditional blue-collar jobs, who feel threatened by globalization and multiculturalism, are inclined more than others to support the populist far right. This research project finds three important factors in the rise of populism: globalization, the challenge of immigration, and a distrust for political institutions, mainly the European Union. Even though, these factors are interrelated and sometimes overlapped, the literature on populism points them out as the most compelling narratives.
