Book The Rise of Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rise of Democracy Classic Reprint written by J. Holland Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Democracy Any inquiry into the course of democratic progress in England would be confessedly imsy and superficial which did not endeavour, however brie y, to indicate the nature of the movement in its earlier stages. Is English democracy of home growth, or does it owe its chief impulse to the cognate movement in France? Was it propelled onwards by a conscious striving after new ideals, or was it merely the result of discontent aroused by material discomforts and unjust laws? Did our Radical reformers claim that they were initiating a new era for humanity at large, or were they content with redressing the ills of the time? To these and similar questions it is hoped that this little work will furnish some reply, not, as a rule, explicitly and in set terms, but rather by means of an unbiassed narrative which will leave the reader free to draw his own conclusions as to the drift of events, the full significance of which cannot as yet be fully realized. Book The Rise and Progress of Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rise and Progress of Democracy Classic Reprint written by Ferdinand Schevill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise and Progress of Democracy I have already called attention to the formation of trade-unions in England in the early part of the nine teenth century. After they had won legal recognition and were no longer persecuted they gave their chief at tention to effecting wage-agreements with their employers and to putting through legislation reducing the hours of labor, protecting the women and children, introduc ing safety devices and SO forth - a mass of Often in finitesimal, but in their bulk, very appreciable, ameliora tions in the lot of the wage - earner, servant and slave of the machine. In England the course of labor has con tinued down to our own day to travel this slow upward path characterized by concessions and compromise, though of late years the continued fair-weather prospect has been troubled by the more radical agitation imported from the continent. To this I shall now invite the reader's atten tion. I have already spoken of St. Simon and Louis Blanc and the rise of a socialist doctrine in France. Its gist was the abolition of private property and the nation alization of the means of production and although it did not call itself socialism at first, the name of socialism he came attached to it and has remained attached to all simi lar philosophies to the present day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Order Changeth: A View of American Democracy Any View of a going concern, like our American democracy, inevitably must be a partial view, be cause it must be a fleeting one. The facts about our democracy to-day Obviously are not the facts of yesterday, nor are they the facts of to-morrow. The democracy in the United States which De Tocqueville saw in the early part of the nineteenth century is not the American democracy rising to power in the twentieth century. Perhaps, indeed, we did not have a democracy at all during the early decades of the nineteenth century. Certainly that democracy passed into the more typical republican form of government during the middle and latter decades of the century. And it seems likely that we are about to revert (or progress, if you would choose that verb) from the republican form under which our. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy, Vol. 1 of 2: In America Inpresenting the translation of this work to the public, preceded by an Introduction in which the author calls the attention of the reader to the present social state of France, I may perhaps be allowed to say a few words on the inferences which are to be drawn from the democratic in stitutions of America relative to our own political condition. We live at a time when so many of the maxims of government are worn out, that in casting our eyes upon the aphorisms of the great statesmen of Europe, we are astonished to find that the authority they attempted to defend is vanished, and the principles by which they de fended it are no more. Book Three Centuries of American Democracy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Three Centuries of American Democracy Classic Reprint written by William Macdonald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Centuries of American Democracy I have had particularly in mind, in writing this book, the very large number of persons who want to know the main facts and the formative influences in the growth of the United States as a democratic nation, but who nevertheless have no time to read elaborate narratives or to study a series of books on special periods or topics. I hope, however, that the book may also prove useful to students and teachers as a summary narrative around which the details of lectures or comprehensive reading can be grouped. The references to authorities are intended, like the text, primarily for the general reader who may wish to pursue the subject further in books that are most worth while. So many elaborate bibliographies of American history are now available that anyone who desires to follow any particular topic to its limits can easily find guidance, while the systematic student will naturally enlarge his bibliography according to his needs or the library resources at his command. Book The Decline and Rise of Democracy

Download or read book The Decline and Rise of Democracy written by David Stasavage and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historical accounts of democracy's rise tend to focus on ancient Greece and pre-Renaissance Europe. The Decline and Rise of Democracy draws from global evidence to show that the story is much richer--democratic practices were present in many places, at many other times, from the Americas before European conquest, to ancient Mesopotamia, to precolonial Africa. Delving into the prevalence of early democracy throughout the world, David Stasavage makes the case that understanding how and where these democracies flourished--and when and why they declined--can provide crucial information not just about the history of governance, but also about the ways modern democracies work and where they could manifest in the future."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of Democracy IT is my purpose in this book to show what real democratic government is. People have studied the outside of the body of democracy; they have hardly begun to know what makes its life, or upon what its good health depends. Democracy is on trial in the world, on a more colossal scale than ever before. Its friends per haps never faced more difficult problems. Neither have they ever had so much reason to hope for success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birth of the New Party or Progressive Democracy During the past few years there had seemed to be no common meeting ground in party politics for the voters who held similar political beliefs. Especially during the past four years, most men have felt that it was only a question Of opportune time when the new alignment in American politics must come, when men and women could align themselves within party organizations that would give positive ex pression to their political beliefs.
