Book The History of Mining

Download or read book The History of Mining written by Michael Coulson and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE INDUSTRY THAT FORGED THE MODERN WORLD Throughout history metals and raw materials have underpinned human activity. So it is that the industry responsible for extracting these materials from the ground - mining - has been ever present throughout the history of civilisation, from the ancient world of the Egyptians and Romans, to the industrial revolution and the British Empire, and through to the present day, with mining firms well represented on the world's most important stock indexes including the FTSE100. This book traces the history of mining from those early moments when man first started using tools to the present day where metals continue to underpin economic activity in the post industrial age. In doing so, the history of mining methods, important events, technological developments, the important firms and the sparkling personalities that built the industry are examined in detail. At every stage, as the history of mining is traced from 40,000BC to the present day, the level of detail increases in accordance with the greater social and industrial developments that have played out as time has progressed. This means that a particular focus is given to the period since the industrial revolution and especially the 20th century. A look is also taken into the future in an effort to chart the direction this great industry might take in years to come. Many books have been written about mining; the majority have focused on a particular metal, geographical area, mining event or mining personality, but 'The History of Mining' has a broader scope and covers all of these essential and fascinating areas in one definitive volume.

Book The History of Broken Hill

Download or read book The History of Broken Hill written by Leonard Samuel Curtis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Broken Hill: Its Rise and Progress From stem to stern, from every port, and high above on the funnels and masts, the glittering lights were shining. On the right stood the sister ships, The South, Block and The Central, somewhat hidden to view, with only a high light or two visible; while on the left, anchored side by side, were Block The British, The Junction, The Junction North, and far away in the distance The North. Let him who has never witnessed this sight or noticed the marvellous resemblance depicted, ascend the Hill any night, and he will be amply repaid by the splendid panoramic view which stretches-out on either side, all brilliantly lit up with thousands of lights, forming a perfect picture for the artist's brush. It is of these Ships, and their actions - the progress they have made - the course they have run - and the speed attained - that this book is written, but it is first needful to secure from the relics of the past their origin and discovery. Book Community Empowerment Sustainable Cities and Transformative Economies

Download or read book Community Empowerment Sustainable Cities and Transformative Economies written by Taha Chaiechi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-12 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents the conference papers from the 1st International Conference on Business, Economics, Management, and Sustainability (BEMAS), organized by the Centre for International Trade and Business in Asia (CITBA) at James Cook University. This book argues that the orthodox methods of external risks, climate change adaptation plans, and sustainable economic growth in cities are no longer adequate. These methods, so far, have not only ignored the ongoing structural changes associated with economic development but also failed to account for evolving industries’ composition and the emergence of new comparative advantages and skills. Specifically, this book looks at the vulnerable communities and exposed areas, particularly in urban areas, that tend to experience higher susceptibility to external risks (such as climate change, natural disasters, and public health emergencies) have been largely ignored in incremental adaptation plans. Vulnerable communities and areas not only require different adaptive responses to climate risk but also possess unlocked adaptive capacity that can motivate different patterns of sustainable development to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda. It is essential, therefore, to view transformative growth and fundamental reorientation of economic resources as integral parts of the solution. Social disorganisation and vulnerability are other undesired outcomes of the unpredictable and widespread external economic shocks. This is due to a sudden and tough competition between members of society to acquire precious resources, most of which may be depleted during unprecedented events such as natural disasters or pandemics resulting in an even more chaotic and disorganised conditions.

There is less interest in the traditional `company-centred' approach and more concern about the wider business context. With the growth of multi-national corporations in the 1980s, international and inter-firm comparisons have gained in importance. In addition, there has been a move towards improving links with mainstream economic, financial and social history through techniques and outlook. The International Bibliography of Business History brings all of the strands together and provides the user with a comprehensive guide to the literature in the field. The Bibliography is a unique volume which covers the depth and breadth of research in business history. This exhaustive volume has been compiled by a team of subject specialists from around the world under the editorship of three prestigious business historians.
