Book Human Rights and the Mission of the Church in Nigeria

Download or read book Human Rights and the Mission of the Church in Nigeria written by Paul Odoeme and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2013 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human rights question constitutes a vital link to the mission of the Christian Church. The Church is thereby obliged by principles of the gospel mandate to defend, promote, and protect human rights. Using the Nigerian context as a model, this book examines how the Church exercises its mission towards salvaging the deplorable situation of human rights violations. The Church is accused of intrusive, ethnocentric, and triumphalist tendencies in some methods and structures, which constantly expose it to steady allegations of human rights violations. This scenario evokes an in-depth investigation into the matter to ascertain the extent of the Church's credibility and competence in the human rights question. Book Contemporary Challenges For Vatican II s Theology Of The Laity

Download or read book Contemporary Challenges For Vatican II s Theology Of The Laity written by Francis Ezenezi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vatican II stipulates that the laity by virtue of their baptism are constitutive members of the Church and should play their role in the mission of the whole Christian faithful in the Church and the world. More than fifty years since the beginning of the Council, the Church in Nigeria is still struggling to understand itself as well as to discern the identity, the role and participation of the lay Christian faithful in the mission of the Church. This thesis explores and analyzes the strengths and limitations of the current dominant ecclesiology of the Roman Catholic Church in Nigeria, and constructively suggests various means of overcoming some of these deficiencies. It will proffer and argue that the contemporary challenges which Vatican II's theology of the laity faces today in the Nigerian Roman Catholic Church call for a Church that is not only participatory, but also prophetic as well as a Church that engages and is constantly in solidarity with the people of God. As a foundation to this reflection, communion ecclesiology is the central and fundamental concept of all the documents of the Second Vatican Council. It provides the basis on which the revolutionary shift in the articulation of the theology of the laity was inaugurated. This shift expresses itself in its call for co-responsibility and participation of all in the life and work of the Church and underscores the priority of the vocation of the whole community of the people of God over all diversities of functions and of charisms. Placed in the context of the Nigerian Church, Christianity seems to be flourishing. However, there is evidence to show that the extent to which the presence of the laity is being felt in other aspects of the ministries of the Church as well as in the Nigerian social order is still very debatable. While acknowledging the outstanding contribution of all the people of God in regard to the proper understanding of the ecclesiology that encourages the active involvement of the laity in the mission of the Nigerian Church and society, the Nigerian Church is still rooted in a juridical ecclesiology, which does not foster the spirit of ecclesial communion and solidarity as forms of Christian witness and ministry. This thesis therefore proposes an inculturated response to the challenges posed by the non-reception of Vatican II's theology of the laity in Nigeria, based on some key principles from Vatican II's ecclesiology and African culture.

Book The Ministry of the Shepherd and the Church in Africa

Download or read book The Ministry of the Shepherd and the Church in Africa written by and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over two million church leaders working in the more than ten million parishes, congregations, seminaries, and houses of religious formation around the world, it is important that all the people of God of every church have selfless church leaders who reflect the mind of Christ. But how can church leaders learn to be true shepherds like Jesus, whose selfless sacrifice of his life for his people set the standard for the pastoral ministry? The Ministry of the Shepherd and the Church in Africa draws on a wide range of Old and New Testament texts to develop the biblical theology of the shepherd Ministry which encourages right shepherding and evangelization in the world of self-serving leadership styles. Focusing especially on the example of pastoral ministry in Africa, author and priest, Cletus Chukwudi Imo explores some of the underlying attitudes of the pastor and the laity, and challenges church leaders to adopt a role as shepherds and servantsnot as self-serving mastersso that they can lead, guide, and teach their congregations as Christ would. Because it can be easy for church leaders to get wrapped up in the sociocultural, political, and economic concerns of their parishes, it is important for these church leaders to shed an undue focus on these concerns instead of shepherd their flocks. By modeling their lives and leadership on the ideals of Jesus, church leadersincluding priests, religious, lecturers, seminarians, and even lay-Christian parents alikecan become true servants and shepherds, honoring the example of Jesus, the Good Shepherd
