Book The Politicization of Safety

Download or read book The Politicization of Safety written by Jane K. Stoever and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-02-26 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at gun control, campus sexual assault, immigration, and more that considers the future of responses to domestic violence Domestic violence is commonly assumed to be a bipartisan, nonpolitical issue, with politicians of all stripes claiming to work to end family violence. Nevertheless, the Violence Against Women Act expired for over 500 days between 2012 and 2013 due to differences between the U.S. Senate and House, demonstrating that legal protections for domestic abuse survivors are both highly political and highly vulnerable. Racial and gender politics, the move toward criminalization, reproductive justice concerns, gun control debates, and political interests are increasingly shaping responses to domestic violence, demonstrating the need for greater consideration of the interplay of politics, domestic violence, and how the law works in people’s lives. The Politicization of Safety provides a critical historical perspective on domestic violence responses in the United States. It grapples with the ways in which child welfare systems and civil and criminal justice responses intersect, and considers the different, overlapping ways in which survivors of domestic abuse are forced to cope with institutionalized discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, and immigration status. The book also examines movement politics and the feminist movement with respect to domestic violence policies. The tensions discussed in this book, similar to those involved in the #metoo movement, include questions of accountability, reckoning, redemption, healing, and forgiveness. What is the future of feminism and the movements against gender-based violence and domestic violence? Readers are invited to question assumptions about how society and the legal system respond to intimate partner violence and to challenge the domestic violence field to move beyond old paradigms and contend with larger justice issues.

Book Domestic Violence Safety Plan

Download or read book Domestic Violence Safety Plan written by Kellie Jo Holly and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kellie Jo Holly compiled "Domestic Violence Safety Plan - A comprehensive plan that will keep you safer whether you stay or leave" after reviewing several safety plans available from domestic violence programs across the United States. She found the plans to be useful, but no plan was comprehensive, so Kellie decided to create the safety plan she wished someone had given her. This is the second edition of that comprehensive safety plan and it includes planning for social network use after leaving the abusive relationship. This is a comprehensive domestic violence and abuse safety planning workbook. It is designed to keep you safer whether you choose to leave or remain in your abusive relationship or marriage. It is as important to protect yourself from the unseen abuses as well as the bruises you will most certainly receive if you choose to stay in your abusive relationship. Verbal, mental, and emotional abuse is domestic violence - you need a plan to keep your body and mind safe. If you already experienced physical assault, it is important to leave the relationship as soon as you can. However, leaving immediately and permanently may not always be possible. The goal of this safety plan is to keep you safer until you can, or decide to, permanently leave your abuser. Many people recommend this Domestic Violence Safety Plan to counselors, crisis line volunteers, nurses and triage workers, domestic violence groups and anyone who regularly talks with victims of domestic violence and abuse. Kellie wants victims of abuse to use this plan as the first step to healing from domestic violence and abuse.

Book Domestic Violence

Download or read book Domestic Violence written by Sarah Hilder and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a variety of socio-legal perspectives on issues of domestic violence and abuse. Focussing on contemporary research and practice developments in policing, law, statutory and voluntary sectors, the contributors to this volume cover a vast spectrum of initiatives and professional expertise concerned variably with protection, prevention and intervention priorities. The challenges of “joined up” thinking across these perspectives are apparent as the varied definitions, underpinning ideologies, terminologies, the profile of the victim/survivor’s voice and identified gaps in service provision appearing in this book illustrate. As a reflection on the current economic climate, some of the perspectives presented necessarily compete rather than complement each other, an issue the volume highlights and addresses. Achieving a broader understanding of these issues and insights into a range of activity in this context is vital for both the practitioner and academic alike, whatever their perspective./div

Book The Physician s Guide to Domestic Violence

Download or read book The Physician s Guide to Domestic Violence written by Patricia R. Salber and published by Volcano Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the prevalence of battered women in the medical setting, many physicians fail to correctly identify and refer abused patients. The introductory chapter of this book discusses definitions of domestic violence, issues of power and control, the prevalence of the problem, the effect of domestic violence on the medical system, and reasons why physicians fail to identify abuse. The profile of domestic violence victims is discussed in terms of gender, ethnic and socioeconomic status, age, marital status, personality traits, sexual orientation, pregnancy, disabilities, immigration status, use of alcohol and drugs, family history, relationship variables, and abuse of children. Issues pertaining to abusers discussed here include substance abuse, critical risk factors, dominance of men over women, and secrecy and denial. Recognition of domestic violence can be improved through patient history and demeanor, companion's behavior, direct questioning, routine screening, and physical examination. When abuse is detected, the physician has many avenues for action: referrals to services and shelters, documentation, treatment, counseling, legal services, and follow-up care. Specific legal issues may include mandatory reporting, duty to warn, liability for reporting, and legal options for the patient. The book discusses how the medical community can prepare itself for an optimal response to domestic violence.

Book Violence Against Women and the Law

Download or read book Violence Against Women and the Law written by David L Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the strength of laws addressing four types of violence against women--rape, marital rape, domestic violence, and sexual harassment--in 196 countries from 2007 to 2010. It analyzes why these laws exist in some places and not others, and why they are stronger or weaker in places where they do exist. The authors have compiled original data that allow them to test various hypotheses related to whether international law drives the enactment of domestic legal protections. They also examine the ways in which these legal protections are related to economic, political, and social institutions, and how transnational society affects the presence and strength of these laws. The original data produced for this book make a major contribution to comparisons and analyses of gender violence and law worldwide.

Book excerpt: For battered women and the family and friends who want to help them—“a smart, step-by-step plan" (Susan Estrich, author of Real Rape). Thousands of women are abused, battered, stalked, and killed by their husbands, boyfriends, and partners every year. While the O.J. Simpson trial raised domestic abuse to the forefront of public consciousness, no one has offered women concrete advice on how to protect themselves and get safely away from their abusers. With detailed, practical information, Susan Murphy-Milano guides women through the process of protecting themselves from domestic violence and stalking. She explains what domestic violence is, how to deal with the police and enlist their help, how to make the decision to leave, what steps to take during the actual move, how to secure one’s home after leaving an abuser, how to navigate the legal system, how to ensure the safety of one’s children, and how to defend against stalking. Family and friends can be crucial in this process, and throughout the book Murphy-Milano suggests numerous ways in which they can help. Defending Our Lives is a much needed resource in the struggle of millions of women to protect themselves from domestic violence and stalking.

Book Gender and Domestic Violence

Download or read book Gender and Domestic Violence written by Brenda Russell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 40 years, considerable progress has been made in lowering rates of domestic violence in our communities. This progress has been uneven, however, due to continuing misconceptions about the causes and dynamics of domestic violence, which include an exaggerated focus on males as perpetrators and females as victims, as well as a heavy-handed law enforcement response that compromises the rights of criminal defendants without necessarily reducing violence. Gender and Domestic Violence presents empirical research findings and reform recommendations for prosecutors, criminal defense attorneys, policy makers and intervention providers with the aim of rectifying shortcomings in legal and law enforcement responses to domestic violence. The volume's editors and chapter authors confront the notion that certain beliefs shared among victim advocates, legal actors, and other stakeholders -- principally that domestic violence is bound by gender, and is primarily a crime against women -- have led to the use of ineffective and potentially harmful one-size-fits-all intervention policies that can jeopardize defendant due process and victim safety. Domestic violence experts, legal scholars, and practicing attorneys present how gendered aspects of domestic violence affect legal decision-making and practice and provide strategies for becoming more inclusive in the adjudicative process, intervention/prevention, and practice. Gender and Domestic Violence: Contemporary Legal Practice and Intervention Reforms provides the foundation from which we can begin to move beyond the gender paradigm by recognizing disparities and applying tools that improve research, policing, and practice, allowing us to progress toward eradicating domestic violence, and to move closer to equality.
