Chicago Tribune Fascinating insight into the evolution of a family over three generations that is simply a good read panoramic sweep, bitter irony and tragic touches. Detroit Free Press Fascinating insider's view of three generations of the R. J. Reynolds tobacco family compelling. Richmond Times-Dispatch An altogether fascinating story [that] quickly builds speed and interest and becomes an absorbing story of fortune and misfortune. Washington Post Book World Readers of this captivating account may need to remind themselves that it is not fiction. There are colorful characters, a family rising from humble beginnings to attain fabulous wealth and power, scandal and tragedy wrought by excess and an irony-laden finale. Publishers Weekly A courageous and worthwhile book. More than an entertainment, it documents the danger of parents who confuse money with love. New York Times Book Review * * * The Gilded Leaf is the riveting, dramatic saga of the R. J. Reynolds tobacco family, one of America's richest and most intensely private clans. R.J. was the original founder of the company that became part of RJR Nabisco, which in 1988 was involved in the largest business takeover in history. Spanning three generations, the Reynolds's story moves from the triumphs of founder and corporate genius R. J. to the dissipation, scandal, and tragedy that plagued his children and grandchildren. There is a redemptive close, with grandson Patrick Reynolds founding Smokefree America and becoming a leading anti-smoking advocate. The Gilded Leaf presents, for the first time, a complete account of the family who captured, spent and redeemed the American dream. For more information, please visit, www.tobaccofree.org/book/.

Book Katharine and R J Reynolds

Download or read book Katharine and R J Reynolds written by Michele Gillespie and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A tour de force . . . a top-notch study of a powerful couple negotiating the shifting socioeconomic world of the New South and early corporate America.”—Journal of American History Separately they were formidable—together they were unstoppable. Despite their intriguing lives and the deep impact they had on their community and region, the story of Richard Joshua Reynolds and Katharine Smith Reynolds has never been fully told. Now Michele Gillespie provides a sweeping account of how R. J. and Katharine succeeded in realizing their American dreams. From relatively modest beginnings, R. J. launched the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, which would eventually develop two hugely profitable products, Prince Albert pipe tobacco and Camel cigarettes. His marriage in 1905 to Katharine Smith, a dynamic woman thirty years his junior, marked the beginning of a unique partnership that went well beyond the family. As a couple, the Reynoldses conducted a far-ranging social life and, under Katharine’s direction, built Reynolda House, a breathtaking estate and model farm. Katharine and R. J. Reynolds “is an engrossing study of a power couple extraordinaire . . . Telling us much about an unusual relationship, Michele Gillespie also provides a new way to understand how the post-Reconstruction New South elite helped construct business structures, social relations, and racial hierarchies. The result is an important addition to our understanding of the industrial South in the North Carolina Piedmont heartland” (William A. Link, author of The Paradox of Southern Progressivism). “Ms. Gillespie uses Katharine’s life and work as a kind of prism through which to view the prejudices and predilections of Southern culture in the 1910s and 1920s.”—The Wall Street Journal

Book Genealogy of a Part of a Branch of the Reynolds Family in the United States 1617 1904 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Genealogy of a Part of a Branch of the Reynolds Family in the United States 1617 1904 Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of a Part of a Branch of the Reynolds Family in the United States, 1617 1904 William reynolds, born in 1560 in Gloucestershire, England, (some say the family came from Wales) married Esther in 1594. Their son, William Jr., born 1596 in Gloucester England, married Ruth 1615. It has been stated, but not proven, that this William Jr. Had two brothers, Christopher and John, all linen weavers by trade, and that about the year they sailed from England and landed on the Island of Bermuda From thence Christopher came to the Carolinas and William to New England (probably New Plymouth, now Salem, Mass.) John remained in Bermuda, and in later years his son, John, came to and settled in Pennsylvania. There were three early settlements of the Reynolds family in Rhode Island: Jonathan at Bristol; John, called John the Carpenter, in what is now Exeter, and James in what is now North Kingstown. By the marriages of three sons of said James to three daughters of James Greene, we have the ancestry of their descendants back to Henry, King of France, 1030, and to Robert, Earl of Leicester, England 1310.
