Book excerpt: A delightful tale of the first-ever teddy bear. The story goes that on a hunting trip in 1902, President Theodore ÒTeddyÓ Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear. A political cartoonist shared the story in the newspaper and then, impressed by the presidentÕs big, warm heart, shopkeepers Rosie and Morris Michtom decided to create a ÒTeddyÓ bear in his honor to sell in their store. The bear was so popular, they made another. And another. And before they knew it, they needed to build a factory: it seemed every child wanted a teddy bear of their own! History with a twist of fun! Now thereÕs even more to love about the ever-popular toy!

Book Teddy Bears Tupperware and Sweet Fanny Adams

Download or read book Teddy Bears Tupperware and Sweet Fanny Adams written by Andrew Sholl and published by Michael O'Mara Books. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's in a name? From Achilles to zeppelin, the words we use in everyday language invoke a cast of historical characters, from figures of ancient legend to modern-day sports stars. But have you ever stopped to wonder how on earth the names became the words we use so often? How, for example, did Italian nationalist leader Giuseppe Garibaldi give his name to something so sweet as a biscuit? Who was the Gordon Bennett whose name has become an expression of surprise or displeasure? And who knew, when Odysseus set off on his ten-year voyage home in Homer's epic, that long journeys would take his name? Behind so many words are real people with a story to tell. This fascinating book reveals the history behind the most familiar and more unusual eponyms.

Book The Untold Story of the Teddy Bear

Download or read book The Untold Story of the Teddy Bear written by Patricia Thorne and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Untold Story of the Teddy Bear solves a mystery in the history of the Teddy Bear. When the Steiff Company of Giengen, Germany created what we know as the classic Teddy Bear in the fall of 1902, the first to be made of mohair with movable arms and legs, no one would buy it. After being presented to toy buyers in the United States and Europe, no one was interested, partly due to its cost, size, and weight. Then along came a toy buyer, in the spring of 1903, who saw it on display at the Leipzig Spring Fair in Germany, and bought 3,000. According to the Steiff Company, they have no document that reveals the buyer's name. The only record they have is the amount of the sale, though they know he was an American representing an American company. Having financial troubles at the time, Margarete's small shop of handmade toys was about to be taken over by its creditors, so it was this sale of the little bears that saved the company. Not having that many toy bears on hand to fill such a huge order, however, many townspeople were enlisted to help so that the shipment would arrive at its destination in time for Christmas. As revealed in The Untold Story of the Teddy Bear, the first true history of the Teddy Bear, the author's grandfather was the American buyer, representing Carson Pirie Scott & Co. of Chicago, who placed that first large order of Steiff's new toy bear and gave it the name "Teddy," now referred to as the "Teddy" bear. The author tells the dramatic story of her grandfather's life and the difficulties he had to overcome, before becoming a successful international buyer, and the remarkable story of Margarete Steiff, founder of her little company of handmade toys. The text also documents the history of the now famous toy bear, in advertisements and editorials, from the time it arrived in the United States in 1903 to its sudden rise in popularity by 1907. Included is the story of the revival of handmade Teddy Bears after World War II, with colorful photographs that illustrate the work of today's talented, award-winning artists. With this book, the author ties together the people, dramatic events, and circumstances that resulted in the establishment of the world's most beloved toy and what these endearing bears have come to mean to children and adults all over the world.

Download or read book Teddy Bear of the Year written by Vikki VanSickle and published by Tundra Books. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teddy bears' picnic gets a modern twist in this warm and fuzzy picture book about a young teddy bear who learns that small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Ollie is a regular bear with a regular job. He listens to his girl's stories about her days, he snuggles her to sleep and he is there waiting when she gets home from school. Just your typical teddy bear stuff. So when he is whisked away to the annual teddy bears' picnic, he feels insignificant compared to the other bears who do daring and daunting things: sleepovers, hospital stays--even a night in the lost and found! After small talk with a regional stuffing manager, a department of cuddling official and a stitchery inspector; a stop at the snack table; and even some team building activities, it's time for the teddy bear service awards . . . and Ollie feels even more small and unimportant. But he soon learns that it's not just the big things that matter, it's the little things too. While parents will love the tongue-in-cheek office-party details, kids and parents alike will fall in love with Ollie: a sweet bear who discovers that his love for his girl makes him very special indeed.

Download or read book The Teddy Bear Project written by Ydessa Hendeles and published by Walther Konig Verlag. This book was released on 2004-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teddy bear is thought to have originated in 1902, when a cartoon of President Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a baby bear appeared in "The Washington Post," Since then, it has become the familiar stuffed toy of every child, a collectible object, and a container of historical, emotional, and sentimental information. Over a period of many years, the Canadian art collector Ydessa Hendeles has bought, via Internet auction, photos in which teddy bears are featured: snapshots, studio and group portraits, and photos of events and sports contests. Often the teddy bear is only marginally visible; nevertheless, through them, these two luxurious volumes show--on more than 1500 typologically organized pages, most of them in color--a fascinating visual story of 20th-century life. "The Teddy Bear Project" offers an amusing, often thought-provoking cultural history of photography, in which the parallel course of idyllic and civil life is just as present as are atrocity, war, persecution, and expulsion.
