Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Return of the Guards and Other Poems These Poems of mine were given to the world, in their latest form, shortly before I was elected to the Poetry Professorship at Oxford - that is a good many years ago. They have long been quite out of print; but, as they had answered their purpose, I let them be. For some time past, however, I have been told by different persons, in various ways, that a new edition of them would be welcomed by that subdivision of the human race which interests itself in Poetry at present. I have, therefore, made arrangements for their republication. Since I ceased to be Poetry Professor, I have not had much to do with literary pursuits. The circumstances of my life have left me without ambition, and without much interest in any thing but my family, my friends, and my country, of whose future I try not to despair. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book The Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature

Download or read book The Oxford History of Classical Reception in English Literature written by David Hopkins and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Classical Reception (OHCREL) is designed to offer a comprehensive investigation of the numerous and diverse ways in which literary texts of the classical world have stimulated responses and refashioning by English writers. Covering the full range of English literature from the early Middle Ages to the present day, OHCREL both synthesizes existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge new research, employing an international team of expert contributors for each of the five volumes. OHCREL endeavours to interrogate, rather than inertly reiterate, conventional assumptions about literary 'periods', the processes of canon-formation, and the relations between literary and non-literary discourse. It conceives of 'reception' as a complex process of dialogic exchange and, rather than offering large cultural generalizations, it engages in close critical analysis of literary texts. It explores in detail the ways in which English writers' engagement with classical literature casts as much light on the classical originals as it does on the English writers' own cultural context. This fourth volume, and second to appear in the series, covers the years 1790-1880 and explores romantic and Victorian receptions of the classics. Noting the changing fortunes of particular classical authors and the influence of developments in archaeology, aesthetics and education, it traces the interplay between classical and nineteenth-century perceptions of gender, class, religion, and the politics of republic and empire in chapters engaging with many of the major writers of this period.

Download or read book William Gladstone written by Roland Quinault and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98) was the outstanding statesman of the Victorian age. He was an MP for over sixty years, a long serving and exceptional Chancellor of the Exchequer and four times Prime Minister. As the leader of the Liberal party over three decades, he personified the values and policies of later Victorian Liberalism. Gladstone, however, was always more than just a politician. He was also a considerable scholar, a dedicated Churchman and had a range of interests and connections that made him, in many respects, the quintessential Victorian. Yet important aspects of Gladstone's life have received relatively little recent attention from historians. This study reappraises Gladstone by focusing on five themes: his reputation; his representation in visual and material culture; his personal life; his role as an official; and the ethical and political basis of his international policies. This collection of original, often multidisciplinary studies, provides new perspectives on Gladstone's public and private life. As such, it illustrates the many-sided nature of his career and the complexities of his personality.

Book excerpt: This work is an account of experiments conducted by Henry Charlton Bastian to challenge the doctrine of Louis Pasteur which states that those organisms which serve to initiate the fermentative modifications, have been derived from a multitudinous army of universal atmospheric germs, which are always prepared, in number and kind suitable for every emergency. It was his attempt at presenting the errors of reasoning M. Pasteur had fallen, and also how his findings were capable of being reversed by the employment of various experimental materials, and methods. Bastian was an advocate of the doctrine of archebiosis and believed that he witnessed the spontaneous generation of living organisms out of non-living matter under his microscope.
