Book excerpt: This volume represents a portion of the Proceedings of the Sixth International Meeting of the Reticuloendothelial Society. There is little question that the University of Freiburg was a most appropriate choice as the site of the meeting since, in essence, the Society was founded here when Aschoff undertook his classical studies on the macrophage and discovered what may well have been the last remaining biological system. In the approximate fifty years which have elapsed since Aschoff introduced the descriptive term Reticuloendothelial System to unify those cells with the common property of phagocytosis, one finds investigative activity at the highest level in all areas of reticuloendothelial involvement. Indeed, the topics covered in the present volume would of necessity require that the common property of phagocytosis which led to the formulation of the reticuloendothelial system be modified. The common basis at the present is clearly no longer phagocytic expression, but the unifying basis of host defense. The totality of reticuloendothelial involvement in host-defense is clearly reflected by the diverse scientific backgrounds and research interests of the participants of the meeting. Remarkable advances in appreciating the involvement of the RES in maintaining the well-being of the host against a variety of endogenous and exogenous factors have been made since volume I of the Advances in Experimental Biology and Medicine on the reticulo endothelial system was published.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive treatise on the reticuloendothelial system is a project jointly shared by individual members of the Reticuloendothelial (RE) Society and bio medical scientists in general who are interested in the intricate system of cells and molecular moieties derived from those cells which constitute the RES. It may now be more fashionable in some quarters to consider these cells as part of what is called the mononuclear phagocytic system or the lymphoreticular sys tem. Nevertheless, because of historical developments and current interest in the subject by investigators from many diverse areas, it seems advantageous to present in one comprehensive treatise current information and knowledge con cerning basic aspects of the RES, such as morphology, biochemistry, phylogeny and ontogeny, physiology, and pharmacology as well as clinical areas including immunopathology, cancer, infectious diseases, allergy, and hypersensitivity. It is anticipated that by presenting information concerning these apparently het erogeneous topics under the unifying umbrella of the RES attention will be focused on the similarities as well as interactions among the cell types constitut ing the RES from the viewpoint of various disciplines. The treatise editors and their editorial board, consisting predominantly of the editors of individual vol umes, are extremely grateful for the enthusiastic cooperation and enormous task undertaken by members of the biomedical community in general and especially by members of the American as well as European and Japanese Reticuloen dothelial Societies.

It had been hoped that the volume would appear by the end of 1972. However, the eagerness of many of the contributors to extend their investigations made this target date impossible. Several of the papers were not presented in the section but were presented elsewhere in the Congress. However, because of their particular relevance to the topic they have been included with the generous consent of the authors.

It is only recently, however, that great progress has been made in the understanding of the processes involved in purine metabolism and its disorders in man. The key enzymes active in the various pathways of purine synthesis and degradation have become known and their properties are the subject of intensive study. Major contributions to the knowledge of normal purine metabolism in man have derived from the study of inborn errors in patients with purine disorders, specifically complete and partial hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase deficiency. Mutations of other enzymes involved in purine metabolism are being discovered. A great step forward has been made in the treatment of gout with the introduction of uricosuric drugs and more recently of the hypoxanthine analogue allopurinol, a synthetic xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Furthermore, the complex nature of the renal handling of urie acid excretion, although still posing difficult problems, appears to approach clari fication.

Yet, learning and education per se rank high in our set of values, from the point of view of both lay people and profes sional workers. For some reason, we fail to detect the illogic inherent in this value system--for, what is research but the learning of new information? Apparently our society associates "learning" only with known, long-gathered information. This symposium, I believe, will generate new information about shock through the integration of knowledge of many investi gators, who have come to share a common meeting ground. Hopefully, the worth of this and similar endeavors will gain the recognition and, more important, the support of the public. In the next decade or so, I believe that shock research workers will be channeling their efforts more and more into investigating the repair of damaged cells. The individual cell and its products must be scrutinized just as carefully as we examine the whole organism or its collections of cells. Shock is an exciting area of research, but it involves years of painstaking work. Moreover, the society which will reap its fruits must be persuaded to share the burden of its support. John A. This puts the red cell squarely in the center of medical practice, since much of medicine-heart, pulmonary, and blood disease- deals with inadequate oxygenation. On April 27th through the 29th, 1972, crystallographers, chemists, biochemists, physiologists, geneticists, and physi cians from many medical disciplines met in the Towsley Center for Continuing Medical Education at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor to present new data, to review recent developments, and to try to piece together additional features of the red cell puzzle. The meeting was dedicated to Dr. Francis John Worsley Roughton, Professor Emeritus of Colloid Science, University of Cambridge, England, in recognition of his numerous excellent contributions to the understanding of hemoglobin and red cell function.
