Book excerpt: In an effort to potentially increase low enrollment of females, particularly minorities, in Engineering programs, this study used a survey to determine motivations, interests and retention of current female Engineering students. A total of 82 participants from varied ethnic (non-Hispanic white, Euro-American, African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, South Asian, Arab American, and Native American participants) and education (high school senior, undergraduate, graduate, and in-service Engineers) backgrounds filled out the survey. With approximately half of the participants being non-minorities (non-Hispanic white or Euro-American), they served as the `control' group for the data, and the comparison group was the minority participants. Notable differences between the two groups were: student participation in female community groups, and extra-curricular activities like sports and arts (writing, drama and band) clubs. Increasing female-minority participation in these clubs and other extra-curricular activities may potentially increase their enrollment numbers in Engineering programs.

By encompassing an unusually large number and range of programs, this research adds to the evidence base for the importance of hands-on exposure to the work of engineering.

The programs involved are the Access to Careers in Engineering (ACE) Program for high school pre-engineering students: the LINK Program for undergraduate students pursuing degree which include engineering; and the PEP (Pre-calculus Enrichment Program) and EPIC (Enrichment Program in Calculus) mathematics programs for undergraduate academic enrichment. The pipeline is such that high school graduates from the ACE Program who enroll at Cleveland State University in pursuit of engineering degrees are admitted to the LINK Program for undergraduate level support. LINK Program students are among the minority participants who receive mathematics enrichment through the PEP and EPIC Programs for successful completion of their engineering required math courses. THese programs are interdependent and share the goal of preparing minority students for engineering careers by enabling them to achieve academically and obtain college degree and career related experience. Only 35,421 of the 112,721 engineering bachelor''s degree recipients in this country in the 2015-16 academic year were African American/Black, Latino, Native American or female. And the percentage of those students among U.S. engineering graduates has been flat or declining for more than a decade. The NSBE Student Retention Toolkit published by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), was developed to address this problem by helping U.S. colleges and universities change the equation for engineering diversity within their institutions. The NSBE Student Retention Toolkit provides research-based strategy briefs, each nine pages or fewer, that present proven strategies for improving student retention and student success in engineering degree programs. The briefs include clear action steps for the readers as well as guidance in avoiding pitfalls. Each strategy is grounded in examples of campus programs that have raised success rates for underrepresented minorities, women and first-generation college-goers.
