Book The Defence Industry in East Central Europe

Download or read book The Defence Industry in East Central Europe written by Judit Kiss and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989-90 the collapse of state socialism and the end of the Cold War brought dramatic changes for the defence industries of East-Central Europe. Initially it seemed that the resources devoted to the Cold War confrontation might become available for investment in non-military economic and social progress. However, by 1994 this optimism had given way to recognition that the transformation would involve significant costs and could not be accomplished quickly. The Defence Industry in East-Central Europe charts the development of the industries of the Visegrad countries - Czechoslovakia and its successor states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia; Poland; and Hungary. In the first part, national case studies underline the different approaches to reform adopted in the individual countries. The second part uses unique information derived from extensive interviews at enterprises in each of the four countries to examine the transformation of industry from a producer perspective.

Book Restructuring of Arms Production in Western Europe

Download or read book Restructuring of Arms Production in Western Europe written by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Profound changes are occurring in the structure of arms production in Western Europe. Concentration is increasing at a fast pace. Small producers are disappearing and even large ones are opting out of the market. The various national arms industries, long operating in protective environments, are rapidly internationalizing. Three factors combine to bring about this change: East-West detente, the creation of the Single European Market, and the constant pressure of increasingly complex technology. In this book experts describe how the framework for producing arms in Western Europe is altered, and how various actors--firms, governments, and trade unions--are adapting to the new situation. The book presents detailed analyses of all the arms-producing countries in Western Europe. In addition to describing recent changes, the authors speculate on the implications of these for the balance of power in Western Europe, the relations between Western Europe and the United States, arms exports to the Third World, and problems of converting from military to civilian production. The appendices include the SIPRI list of the 50 largest arms-producing companies in Western Europe; data on mergers and acquisitions, procurement expenditure, and exports of major weapons; selections from treaties and other official documents relevant to current and future regulation of West European arms production; and a select bibliography.

Book The Transatlantic Defense Industrial Base

Download or read book The Transatlantic Defense Industrial Base written by Terrence R. Guay and published by Strategic Studies Institute. This book was released on 2005 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph compares the post-Cold War restructuring of the defense industries in the United States and Europe with the aim of understanding the implications for the transatlantic industrial base. We argue that different processes of industrial restructuring and consolidation present obstacles to transatlantic initiatives, and that government policies and conflicting political visions exacerbate the opportunities for collaboration between the United States and Europe. We assess the extent to which the restructuring of the U.S. and European defense industrial bases has uprooted national champions and, assisted by global competition, provided an industrial foundation for more extensive transatlantic cooperation. We conclude by suggesting factors that will shape further restructuring and consolidation in the short- and medium term and making recommendations for assisting the development of a transatlantic, rather than bipolar, defense industrial base.

Book Europe s Defence Industry

Download or read book Europe s Defence Industry written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Europe's defence industry starts to consolidate, the contributors to this pamphlet debate its future. Most conclude that in a globalising market, the defence companies of the future will have to straddle both sides of the Atlantic. As Europe's defence industry starts to consolidate, distinguished industrialists, officials, academics and commentators debate its future. Some of the contributors to this pamphlet argue that companies should come together in a European Aerospace and Defence Company, before forging links with American firms. Others make the case for European defence firms to seek American partners, so that rival transatlantic alliances can maintain competition. However, most of the authors beleive that in a globalising market, the defence companies of the future will have to starddle both sides of the Atlantic.

Book The European Rupture

Download or read book The European Rupture written by Mary Kaldor and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Rupture focuses on the consequences of the end of the Cold War for defence sectors in Europe. It offers a theoretical framework supported by country case studies from both Western Europe and formerly centrally planned economies. The discussion in the first part of the book analyses the connection between security and the Cold War economy, arguing that the defence sector profoundly shaped the technological development and industrial and social policy in both East and West. It considers some of the issues that have to be confronted in the transition periods, focusing on the new challenges to our perceptions of security, changes in technology and problems of defence conversion. The final part considers the need for new institutional arrangements and how these have to be constructed in order to re-establish a system of international security and economic regulation. It proposes that there should be a shift away from national or bloc security policies towards a more internationalist security policy, and appropriate measures of economic adjustment, especially defence conversion. This book will be of special interest to academics and students interested in European studies, international affairs, international policy and policymakers.
