EGYPT FIFTY YEARS HENCE "THE Garden of the Lord" was the epithet applied to Egypt by Eastern writers over four thousand years ago. "Vidi viridem Egyptum" was the observation of the Roman traveller of two thousand years ago. "Green, inexpressibly green, is the vale known as the land of Egypt" was the observation of the English traveller of fifty years ago. What will the Nile Valley appear like to the traveller of fifty years hence? Green it will surely be; but it will be no longer a beacon pointing to the permanent prosperity which the irrigation systems of the ancient world could confer on a country. It will be a beacon showing what modern irrigation and modern science can do to develop agricultural wealth. The giant works in progress and in contemplation will have put their impress on the country with no light hand. His Highness Abbas Hilmy, counselled by Lord Cromer, a guide as sage and as reliable as ever advised Pharaoh or Khalif, is carrying out works which will have taken us far beyond the great days of the Pharaohs of the 12th Dynasty, the Amenemhats and the Usartesens, whose works have left an impression on Egypt which has survived the revolutions and the catastrophes of four thousand years. The modern Egypt, which we see to-day, whose foundation stone was laid by His Highness' predecessor, the great Mohamed All, counselled and advised by the eminent Frenchmen whom he delighted to honour, will, in all human probability, be completed to its very summit by His Highness Abbas Hilmy himself, who will see Egypt attain a height of splendour and magnificence which no predecessor of his ever saw; no not Ramses nor Thotmes. Before proceeding to the description of the country as I think it will be fifty years hence, it may be well to sound...

Book Ancient and Modern Chaldean History

Download or read book Ancient and Modern Chaldean History written by Ray Kamoo and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a depiction of the Aramaic tribes of Mesopotamia; it explores the ancient and modern periods, the civil and religious influences, and the pagan and Christian heritage. For the past five centuries, the name Chaldean has been applied to Aramaic speaking people of Mesopotamia, and was the last term used to indicate Mesopotamian identity. The author was inspired by the presence of over a hundred thousand Chaldeans in the United States to produce this reference. He cites books and articles that deal with the history and culture, ancient and modern periods, the civil and religious influences, and the pagan and Christian heritage. The unannotated entries are arranged first by ancient and modern periods, then by form -- such as English books and non-English journal articles.

Download or read book Zionism Without Zion written by Gur Alroey and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-02 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines an alternative ideology to Zionism that attempted to build a Jewish State outside of Palestine. While the ideologies of Territorialism and Zionism originated at the same time, the Territorialists foresaw a dire fate for Eastern European Jews, arguing that they could not wait for the Zionist Organization to establish a Jewish state in Palestine. This pessimistic worldview led Territorialists to favor a solution for the Jewish state "here and now"—and not only in the Land of Israel. In Zionism without Zion: The Jewish Territorial Organization and Its Conflict with the Zionist Organization, author Gur Alroey examines this group's unique perspective, its struggle with the Zionist movement, its Zionist rivals' response, and its diplomatic efforts to obtain a territory for the Jewish people in the first decades of the twentieth century. Alroey begins by examining the British government's Uganda Plan and the ensuing crisis it caused in the Zionist movement and Jewish society. He details the founding of the Jewish Territorial Organization (ITO) in 1903 and explains the varied reactions that the Territorialist ideology received from Zionists and settlers in Palestine. Alroey also details the diplomatic efforts of Territorialists during their desperate search for a suitable territory, which ultimately never bore fruit. Finally, he attempts to understand the reasons for the ITO's dissolution after the Balfour Declaration, explores the revival of Territorialism with the New Territorialists in the 1930s and 1940s, and describes the similarities and differences between the movement then and its earlier version. Zionism without Zion sheds new light on the solutions Territorialism proposed to alleviate the hardship of Eastern European Jews at the start of the twentieth century and offers fresh insights into the challenges faced by Zionism in the same era. The thorough discussion of this under-studied ideology will be of considerable interested to scholars of Eastern European history, Jewish history, and Israel studies.

Book International Law and the Third World

Download or read book International Law and the Third World written by Richard Falk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-03-31 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to critically exploring the past, present and future relevance of international law to the priorities of the countries, peoples and regions of the South. Within the limits of space it has tried to be comprehensive in scope and representative in perspective and participation. The contributions are grouped into three clusters to give some sense of coherence to the overall theme: articles by Baxi, Anghie, Falk, Stevens and Rajagopal on general issues bearing on the interplay between international law and world order; articles highlighting regional experience by An-Na’im, Okafor, Obregon and Shalakany; and articles on substantive perspectives by Mgbeoji, Nesiah, Said, Elver, King-Irani, Chinkin, Charlesworth and Gathii. This collective effort gives an illuminating account of the unifying themes, while at the same time exhibiting the wide diversity of concerns and approaches.
