Book The response of Norway spruce seedlings to simulated acid mist

Download or read book The response of Norway spruce seedlings to simulated acid mist written by L J (Lucy) Sheppard and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four pot experiments are reported in which Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) seedlings, of different nutrient status, were treated with acid mist for one growing season in open-top chambers (OTCs). Combinations of H+, SO42-, NH4+ and NO3- were applied at different frequencies of application and supplying different doses of S and N kg ha-1. Plant growth, visible injury, frost hardiness and nutrient status were observed. These experiments were undertaken to improve our understanding of the interaction of environmental factors such as nutrition and mist-exposure frequency on seedling response to N and S deposition. Both acidity (less than or equal to pH 2.7) and SO42- ions were necessary to induce visible injury. Mist containing SO42-,2-, Hi and to a lesser extent NH4+ significantly reduced winter frost hardiness. Increasing the misting frequency, and to a lesser extent the overall dose, increased the likelihood of acid mist causing visible injury and reducing frost hardiness. Post-planting stress, low N status and needle juvenility increased the likelihood of acid mist causing visible injury. Increased plant vitality, adequate N status and growth rate reduced the likelihood of acid-mist-induced reductions in frost hardiness. Principles underlying the responses of spruce seedlings treated in controlled conditions to acid mist are discussed.

Book Responses of Forest Ecosystems to Environmental Changes

Download or read book Responses of Forest Ecosystems to Environmental Changes written by A. Teller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1019 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book arises out of a symposium on forest and woodland terrestrial ecosystems which was held in Florence on 20-24th May 1991. It was organised jointly by the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) and the European Science Foundation (ESF) in association with the Italian Research Council (CNR). The symposium brQughUogether most -Of the internationally recognized groups working on forest ecosystems including biologists, botanists, ecologists, soil scientists, modellers, foresters and policy makers. All the CEC countries were represented. In addition, there was a broad audience from Eastern and Central Europe and from EFfA countries. Outstanding experts from outside Europe (US, Australia, Canada, Japan, China, etc.) were also present. In total, the symposium was attended by more than 500 participants. The structure of this book reflects the main elements of the meeting. As such it includes three main sections. The first consists of six major state-of-the-art reviews corresponding to the six plenary sessions, each followed by a discussion which has been summarized by rapporteurs. The reviews were prepared to assess critically the state of current knowledge in ecosystem research and to provide a scientific basis both for policy decisions and for further research.

Book The impact of constituent ions of acid mist on assimilation and stomatal conductance of Norway spruce prior and post mid winter freezing

Download or read book The impact of constituent ions of acid mist on assimilation and stomatal conductance of Norway spruce prior and post mid winter freezing written by Derek Eamus and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norway spruce seedlings were sprayed twice weekly with one of a range of artificial mists at either pH 2.5, 3.0 or 5.6, for three months. The mists consisted of either (NH4)2SO4 (pH 5-6), NH4NO3 (pH 5-6), water (pH 5-6), HNO3 (Ph 2.5), HSO4 (pH 2-5 or pH 3.0), or NH4NO3 Plus (NH4)2SO4 (pH 2-5). In late December 1988 and early January 1989 the light response of assimilation and stomatal conductance were assessed in the laboratory following a 4-day equilibration period at 12-degrees-C The intact trees were then subjected to a mild (-10-degrees-C), brief (3 h) frost in the dark and the recovery of light saturated assimilation (A(max)) was followed during the subsequent light period The same trees were then subjected to a second 3 h (-18-degrees-C) frost. The recovery of A(max) during the next day was followed All ion-containing mists stimulated A(max) and apparent quantum yield relative to control trees, irrespective of pH. The mists containing SO4 made stomatal conductance unresponsive to light flux density and caused the stomata to lock open. Frosts of -10-degrees-C and -18-degrees-C did not inhibit the A(max) of control trees for longer than 200 min into the light period In contrast, the ion-containing mists exerted a significant inhibitory effect upon the recovery of A(max). Nitric acid inhibited A(max) to 35% of the pre-frost value, whilst the remaining treatments inhibited A(max) between 15% and 40% of the pre-frost value. It is concluded that SO4 causes increased mid-winter frost sensitivity and NO3 ameliorates this effect. The results are discussed in relation to forest decline.

Download or read book Acid Deposition written by James W.S. Longhurst and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of acid deposition remains one of the most urgent of our contemporary environmental problems. Research programmes are continually redefming our understanding of cause and effect and hence the continuing need for a timely and authoritative series addressing these issues. This volume seeks to review and defme our contemporary understanding of acid deposition by reference to new international data and as a consequence assist the definition of our future research requirements and policy developments. International contributions to the volume are drawn from the Federal Republic of Germany, the U.S.A., Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, Austria, Israel, France and the United Kingdom. Some of these nations have experienced acid deposition on a regional scale for considerable periods of time; for others the phenomenon is an emerging problem. This collection of papers has been compiled by invitation to eminent members of the acid deposition research community and by selection from a carefully targeted call for papers. It is primarily designed to meet the needs of researchers, lecturers and postgraduate students in environmental disciplines and for environmental policy makers. It is of interest to professionals in related disciplines and essential as a reference text for libraries. The volume is divided into four broad themes: Emissions, chemistry and deposition; Ecosystem effects (freshwater, soils and forest systems); Effects on structural materials; Mitigation, control and management. Each of these sections provides an overview of contemporary understanding, presents new experimental or field evidence and provides guidance for our future research agenda.

Download or read book Forests and Insects written by Allan D. Watt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-09-30 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the full breadth of forest entomology. It combines the work of forest entomologists working on the impact and management of forest pests with those involved in diversity assessment and conservation of insects in forests. Forests and Insects demonstrates that both these disciplines demand an understanding of population and community biology. The book covers such topics as colonization of trees by insects, population dynamics of forest insects, insect natural enemies, the effects of climate change and pollution on forest pests, spatial variation in the abundance of insects, the mineralization of carbon by termites, the impact of herbivorous insects, and the conservation of forest insect diversity, including the effects of forest fragmentation and deforestation. This Royal Entomological Society Symposium volume will be of great interest to all agricultural and forest entomologists, population and community biologists, pest management specialists and anyone concerned with the conservation of forest biodiversity.
